This book is a very entertaining and interesting read for those that find the ancient inhabitants of North America a fascinating mystery. The book,as the title suggests, is in question-and-answer format which holds the reader's interest and keeps his eyes glued to the pages. All of the 101 questions are answered in a few short but informative paragraphs. Also, accompanying each question is one or more colored photographs with captions that further add to the book's appeal. I strongly recommend this book as an introduction to the ancient people of the Southwest.

I loved this story...it is set where I live in South Texas and where the author grew up...The charting of the last year of a dying man might seem gruesome, and yet, I finished the book with a greater understanding of what living is all about, and how Adam and his family came to be at peace in the calm of the beautiful Rio Grande Valley. This unsentimental story I found hard to put down until I finished it.

Great for anyone planning to visit Southwest to view native cacti. Not a gardening book, so do not expect growing information. If you love the desert, just 5 minutes of reading this book over coffee takes you there....

This is a very tender cute. It is inspirational since the author is the illustrator, so I can sort of feel what she felt when doing this book. One of my grandmothers lived in the country field, and I remember seeing her cooking, feeding the chickens and the hens, and I remember staying at her house listening to her stories.
I think the quote that stood up the most from this book was: "It is by reaching out to one another that we, too create something beautiful to last throughout the ages. No matter where life leads you". This is so true, because, even though my Abuelita passed away, I remember all her teachings, her beliefs and the way she inspired me.
I give five stars to this book. The book is beautiful illustrated and it is a tribute to all the Abuelitas. The richness of the Latino and Native American culture mix together in this inspirational book.

I live in New Mexico. This book is fun and interesting, a very accurate portrayal of Hispanos, I think. It's in both real dialogue Spanish and has a good English translation. That was the best part. Mr. Garcia has contributed to American history and anthropology in an important way.

Back in 2004, I was doing research in New Mexico for my book Microbe: Are We Ready For The Next Plague?. I decided to take a side trip to see Acoma - and what a side trip it was! Truly, one of the few times in my life where I felt like I'd stepped into another time, another world.
Minge's book has much the same effect on even the casual reader - it's easy to see why it's the only history of the Sky City sanctioned by the tribal council. Exhaustive, full of detail, and yes at the same time very readable. Some fascinating photographs and stories to pore over and ponder, especially through the arrival of the Spanish and the Americans.
The book is also a tribute to the strength of the people of Acoma and their decision to keep their culture alive and to honor their heritage. A definite must-read to anyone who is interested in the rich cultural heritage of the American Southwest.

Helen Sloan Daniels, born 1899, was an amateur archeologist with loads of practical experience, a philanthropist, and a local expert in all things Anasazi. This 52 page pamphlet, with over 25 illustrations uses primary and secondary sources to capture the Falls Creek Anasazi site and the history of excavations there.
Daniels provides details of archeological explorations from the late 19th century up to 1975, with a particular emphasis on some of the important mummy finds and petroglyphs. She brings all sorts of interesting sources to the table, ranging from notes made by individual archeologists, newspaper articles, magazine articles, and even a couple of paragraphs from Ernie Pyle.
Stapled wraps, 28 short chapters, index, and 2 page Bibliography.

Dr. Barr has continued his good work of telling the story of African Americans in Texas and placing them within the context of the state's overall history. Although this book is written for a general audience it mirrors and draws from Dr. Barr's scholarly work on African Americans in Texas and fills a vacuum on the topic. I like the book because it is accessible by numerous audiences and will lead the serious student to the most current research on the subject. If one just wants an overview, then he or she will learn about Black Texans from Esteban to Blind Lemon Jefferson and Barbara Jordan.

This book provides an excellent chance to learn more about Aldo Leopold, one of the most important conservationists ever. The editors have assembled a highly instructive sample of Leopold's essays and articles written throughout his career. The essays provide insights into Leopold's development from a predator-destroying wildlife manager to world-class conservationist. The editors' introductory essays to sets of Leopold's writings are themselves first-rate. Brown and Carmony provide the reader with the historical context for understanding the significance of Leopold's essays as his career unfolded. Highly recommended.
