Pirate Radio: The Incredible Saga of America's Underground, Illegal Broadcasters

Andrew Yoder has attempted to provide a thorough and in-depth look at the history of the phenomenon of pirate broadcasting. In some respects, he succeeds. The book presents a great deal of information not only on the history of pirate radio, but on other important issues such as FCC enforcement, technology, programming, and more.

However, the book is at times a struggle to read due to being poorly written. It is at once chock full of facts and glaring grammatical errors. Someone so passionate about their subject matter should take more care in crafting their presentation.

The cd included is virtually useless. It includes 18 minutes of extremely short segments from pirate broadcasts. Granted, little pirate material has been recorded, but this audio document serves little purpose. Complete broadcasts, or even more substantial excerpts would have been a much more useful companion to Yoder's book.

The book focuses heavily on pirating in North America. While Yoder covers other cultural contexts, he does so very briefly. As such, these moments seem to stand only as a comparison to US broadcasts.

Overall, the book is worthwhile reading for those interested in the history of pirate radio. Despite the aforementioned flaws, there is a lot of good history here.

Personally, I enjoyed this book. At the time I bought it,12/95, I hadn't heard a pirate broadcast so I listened to the enclosed CD which was especially valuable. It helped me understand how difficult the broadcasts can be to hear, even under the optimum conditions. The book has a nice history of the active pirates both in the U.S. and international past and present. It describes nicely what pirates do, why they do it, and a little on how they do it on shortwave and FM micreobroadcasting. It tells about how the FCC and their perpetual search for the transmitting pirate. Overall, I've learned a lot more about shortwave pirates. Thanks Andrew Yoder for and excellent reference. P.S. I finally heard my first pirate! Take it easy radio on 6955 MHz, they even QSL'd me.

Great Lessons from the Great Escape!

Project Lessons from The Great Escape is a fascinating read! Mark's use of a familiar story (thanks to The Great Escape starring Steve McQueen and Sir Richard Attenborough, MGM, 1963) is an excellent way to illustrate the nine knowledge areas of the Guide to Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBoK). As a former F-15E Weapons System Officer (WSO) with combat during DESERT STORM and past President of the PMI Central Virginia Chapter (PMI CVC) I was captivated by Mark's analysis. While true that what happened in Stalag Luft III can't be too tightly tied to today's business environment; the illustration of the importance and cohesiveness of the nine knowledge areas remains. The story is a great means by which to illustrate modern project management methods and provide a springboard for conversation to leverage the lessons of the past and apply them to today. I highly recommend this book and others from Mark's "Lessons From History" series.

Some valuable lessons about project management, as long as the analogies are not taken too far

One of the most dramatic escape attempts ever carried out by prisoners of war took place at Stalag Luft III in eastern Germany in World War II. It was a prison camp populated almost exclusively by allied airmen shot down over Germany. Nearly all were crew members of bombers that were devastating the German cities. The German population considered them to be criminals and there were many instances of downed fliers being brutally killed by the revenge-minded civilian population. Therefore, if a POW was to escape from the Stalag, there was little possibility of being aided by the civilians if it were to become known that he was the member of an Allied air crew.
The POWs in the camp were well organized and controlled, in many ways the camp represented a village isolated in the region but in contact with the outside world. Red Cross parcels arrived on a regular basis and there was a strict military chain of command that was respected by both the POWs and their German military guards. Within this context, the POWs planned and carried out an elaborate tunneling system that allowed several hundred POWs to flee the camp.
In this book, the author relates the project of escaping from the camp to other major projects in less life-threatening circumstances. There is the process of setting the overall goals, soliciting and examining all possible options, making a decision regarding what option to pursue, managing the project, setting the timeframe for termination, acquiring and efficiently allocating limited assets, and carrying out the escape attempt. Of the hundreds of men who fled the camp on the night of March 24, 1944 only three made it back to allied territory and over 50 of those captured were executed by the Gestapo. What was considered the greatest point of success was that immediately after the escape, 70,000 German soldiers were tied down in the search and re-capture of a few hundred men.
While I agree that some of lessons of the great escape can be applied to the modern business world, one must be very careful in too tightly winding the analogy. I cite the following reasons why some space must be maintained.

1) This project was carried out in a time of war, being bombarded by memos and business plans is nowhere near the threat of death by bombs and bullets.
2) The men in Stalag Luft III were under military discipline, where the order of a superior officer must be obeyed. Attempting to relate military command structures to civilian processes is a difficult one to do right.
3) The POWs in the stalag were not able to leave, not even request a transfer. This will impart a cohesion that cannot exist in civilian life, where a person is free to quit and pursue another job.
4) Being airmen, the POWs in Stalag Luft III were more intelligent, educated and highly trained than most other members of the military. Given the large number of POWs in the camp, this meant that nearly every skill would be present.

Could not put the book down

An entertaining and informative book that connects the Great Escape to the PMBoK (project management book of knowledge) knowledge areas in a way that teaches you without sounding like a classroom textbook. Our department's group of PMPs will be using this book as reference during our weekly lunch and learn sessions to discuss how we can better plan our contingencies. The book has taught me that almost any obstacle can be overcome with some basic brainstorming and resourcefulness. I would highly recommend this book.

Professor Kelleher's book is relevant for students of online public relations because it applies solid academic theory to currently developing real-world contexts and points out the fact that the landscape of the Web is changing so rapidly that today's realities soon become displaced with new innovations. He points out how the role and expectations for PR practitioners has changed with the Internet becoming a dominant means of information dissemination. Peer to peer communication and interaction from myraid publics makes a much more complex paradigm than the type traditionally used.

One of the realities of a more media literate audience is that effective PR practitioners have to consider that they cannot ignore negative aspects of the organizations they represent. In order to maintain credibility, they sometimes might even provide links to organizations who do not necessarily represent the views of their clients.

The concluding chapter places primary data collection and analysis in an Internet context and discusses how projects can be conducted in cyberspace. Chapter nine shows what happened in a real case study where libelous content had direct consequences for a company in the rapidly moving information age. Odd that in his writing style, Kelleher uses feminine forms of expression when he is talking about positives, while he tends to use masculine at other times. Overall this is a helpful book that provides a lot of valuable explanation and analysis of the current state of PR use online.

The title of this adventure is WE DARE TO SAY--but first we are dared to READ! At the top of each purposely un-numbered page (you can start anywhere!) one is drawn in by a brief, spirited, well-crafted reflection. Nudged by the unexpected found there, the reader is all but impelled to write, to probe, emote, journal; to allow challenge, delight, new insight flow from pen to page in word and poetry.

This journal is an adventure for those who have the courage to journey more deeply inito life, its mysteries and meanings. There are many references to the Christian story, but the reflections open the reader/wrier to a more inclusive sense opf the Sacred. Without hesitation I would invite anyone to journal your way through this 21st century Book of Proverbs.

A Write-in Book of Journal Prompts

Rev. William Burke, a priest in the archdiocese of Chicago, supplies the only extended text in this book, a "Welcome" introducing the work and author Ken Trainor, whom he has known for several years.

Trainor is a journalist and student of contemplative living, who has made annual retreats at a Trappist monastery for more than a dozen years. We Dare to Say is made up of seven named sections consisting of a title, quotation from Scripture, and between 8 and 24 pages, all lined for easy journal writing, headed by a short reflection from Trainor. Further Scripture passages appear at the bottom of some pages.

A number of the reflections take the form of personal questions, as Where do you store the sadness you can't let go? and Does it terrify you that you might be wasting your life? Does it terrify you enough? Others are more like aphorisms, as "Prayer and meditation: the ultimate in single-tasking.... Rain is just a cloud lightening its load.... Life is like a good night's sleep. At the end of it, we wake up." There are also sections on re-visions ("Don't grant me easily the serenity to accept what I can't change") and comparisons ("The passage of time is merely eternity changing its clothes"). Reflections in the confessions section relate to Ecclesiastes 3: 1-8, parts of which grace the bottom of 16 pages. Trainor writes, "Whether I succeed or fail, I may inspire someone else to try. Eventually, someone is bound to succeed" to complement the opening phrase of the passage, "For everything there is a season...."

In addition to its use for personal journal keeping, We Dare to Say would be a good resource for leaders of faith sharing groups and retreats.

For writers, the words of Epictetus ring clear, "If you wish to be a writer; write!" Sometimes the words flow as effortlessly as the cascading water over a waterfall. Other times, however, writers cannot seem to make words appear on paper. It is a delicate time--a story wants to break through but will not. Sadly, many great stories are lost forever when discouraged writers discard the pen and paper in a fit of frustration.

If you find yourself in such a position and cannot seem to get your words on paper, Kenneth Trainor's We Dare to Say: An Adventure in Journaling is worth a look. The author's background has taught him the importance of reflective thought to awaken the creative genius. Furthermore, We Dare to Say is a masterful blend of quotations guided by Scripture.

One such quotation is: "We are either the by-product of erosion or the work of a master sculptor. One way or the other, life will have its way with us." Each blank page of this journal includes a quote, which will help the writer ponder issues worthy of writing. Trainor allows Scripture to work along the bottom edge of the paper, guiding writers to the best source of inspiration.

The biblical authors wrote when they were inspired by God--literally being given the "God-breathed" the words to record. The written word is an investment in this visitation of the Holy One as He guides the pen on the paper. Seeking inspiration through reflection and openness to God will allow your story to emerge.

Epictetus' famed words could aptly be revised: "If you wish to be a writer; journal first - and you will be a better writer!" Kenneth Trainor's work is an apt resource to help authors let their stories break out.

How the world really works.

Review Date: 2005-10-11
I just finished reading this and while I'm slightly disappointed that there wasn't more about what really happened on 9/11, it's understandable considering this edition was written in 2002 when there wasn't as much of an "orgy of evidence" that clearly showed that elements of the U.S. Government were intimately involved in the "surprise" attacks. Hopefully the information will be expanded on in a newer edition, which will hopefully be a more affordable paperback version. There are though some incredibly detailed accounts of what was happening in those towers as the planes hit. Also good info about a whole lot of damaging evidence to the financial establishment that was destroyed when those towers came down.

Also, this was written pre-Iraq war but there are some incredible accounts from inside Afghanistan as the randomly-dropped bombs mercilessly blew apart scores of innocent women and children - as the old warlords were being replaced with U.S.-friendly, and even more brutal warlords.

The rest of this book is practically a Bible of knowledge if you want to understand why the world is in the shape that it is in and how the U.S. Government has played a major role in its tragic slide into worldwide misery.

The U.S. Government has had a whole lot to do with terror.
From setting up terrorist training camps in Pakistan and Afghanistan when it was a useful tool to battle the "evildoers" of that day, which were the Soviets. The U.S. Government brought the Taliban to power and kept them there until they would no longer play ball.

The Taliban got greedy and wanted to much money to let the U.S. oil companies lay down their pipelines. They then committed the cardinal sin of shutting down those poppy fields which put a real hurting on the underground and "legitimate" economies of the western world which now have to have huge drug revenues to stay afloat.

A great job is done exposing the anthrax attacks after 9/11 that helped rush through the Patriot Act. It is now known that the anthrax was sent from the U.S. weapons lab at Fort Detrick, Maryland for the purpose of intimidation and political assassination. Remember - no Republicans got any of those anthrax-laced letters.

Why don't you hear any of this truth? Because the big corporations that own the government also own the media. He does a great job detailing this. This book is really a must-have.

It encompasses everything that any citizen of the U.S. and of the world must know to see how corrupt power dominates this planet and is setting up a police state to put down those who will resist it.

welcome to the world of make believe

Reading this book would help anyone to be more educated and less naive as to what the reality behind "Showtime America" is, based on a clearer understanding of issues like war...
I thought the movie "The Matrix" was brilliant, now I find it to be closer to reality than I thought.

...ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.--John 8:32

The author has a Ph.D in Mass Communications. Over the past twenty-five years he has worked as a news anchor, reporter and documentary writer and producer for numerous broadcast news organizations.

Kelly believes that communicating the truth to a mass audience is a daunting task, complicated by several factors. Many reporters state facts as truth, when in reality they are influencing the public's reactions due to simple hearsay. More often than not, everything we see, hear and read about in the news is not gospel.

Reporters are human with human foibles and their religious, political and psychological viewpoints often color their reports. At the same time, every person's reactions to the news is biased according to the same value system. In accepting or rejecting media reports, beliefs are critical in determining attitudes.

Kelly lists major American news organizations and their owners, categorizing them according to whether or not they are considered to be conservative, moderate, or liberal. He points out that the three major broadcasting networks, ABC, NBC and CBS are all considered to be moderate. This is due to their desire to produce news that will attract the most viewers. However, cable news networks such as CNN and MSNBC are more liberal, attempting to compete for the smaller cable news audience. As of 2005, FOX News, with a clearly conservative slant, has proven to be the most popular among viewers.

News critics blame reporters for neglecting important information that might skew the public's reactions to a particular news story, but they hold the owners of the broadcasting networks solely responsible for delivering the truth.

Kelly suggests that the public approach the media with a prayerful attitude, much the same as biblical scholars bring to the study of sacred texts.

I highly recommend this book for those who seek the truth and do not accept everything they see, hear, or read as factual until proven with certainty to be reality.

Experienced news anchor, reporter, and documentary writer Mark Kelly presents Engaging News Media: A Practical Guide for People of Faith, a guide to evaluating and verifying truthfulness amid the political opinions, bias, and sometimes outright BS strewn across the many lanes of the modern information superhighway. Though written by a person of faith especially to help other Christians sort through news media, Engaging News Media is emphatically not biased toward the hardcore conservative Christian perspective - nor is it biased toward a hardcore liberal perspective. The strategies presented are ones used by (religious or secular!) journalists themselves, and invaluable to anyone trying to understand the truth, regardless of personal faith. One such technique is learning how to triangulate alternative media - rather than accepting any one alternative media's viewpoint as gospel, consult multiple alternative media known to lean toward different sides of the issue and compare their stories. Another is to pay close attention to the very first thing a news story emphasizes, in order to get a better feel for what, if any, bias the story has. Engaging News Media seriously contemplates the question "What is Truth?" in the literal sense more than the metaphysical sense, and is very strongly recommended for readers of all backgrounds especially in today's era of misinformation.

I am a beginnner in the realm of publications design and I was looking for a good introduction to the field. This book offers just that. It serves as a great guide for things that you will need to study in more depth if you want to function in this realm of design. The writing is very reader-friendly. It is not too wordy or "text bookish". Here is a break down of the chapters you will find in this book:

1.) Publication Desing Within an Historical Context - Exactly what it says: The history and development of graphic design as a discipline.

2.) The Principles and Elements of Publication Design - Basic design principles as applied specifically to publications.

3.) Using Color Effectively - Color is a lot more complex than one might think, and managing its use is an important part of visual communication.

4.) Understanding Type - Typography (big shocker).

5.) Page Layout - One of the most valuable chapter (IMO). Discusses grid systems and properly organizing pages.

6.) Imagery - Different types of imagery, possibly sources, using it effectively etc.

7.) Publication in the Third Dimension - Another of my favorite chapters. Introduces you to printing concerns such as paper weights and binding techniques.

8.) Design Principles at Work - Case studies of specific publication types (magazines, newspapers, newsletters, catalogs etc.).

9.) Professional Opportunities in Pubcliations Design - Awesome chapter detailing the different areas one can find work in (yes, there are quite a lot).

Overall this is a great introduction. However potential buyers should note this. These subjects definitely require further reading and study, but this book is a great starting point.

My only real complaint with this book is in regards to another book in the Design Exploration series that Poppy Evans co-authored: "Exploring the Elements of Design". This book can be a bit repetitive if you already own EoD. Some chapters may as well have been copy and pasted between the two books. That's how similar they are (ESPECIALLY the imagery chapter). Quite a few of the diagrams are copied directly from "Elements" which did annoy me quite a bit. Despite this, the chapters not appearing in "Elements" make this book more than worth the money as far as I'm concerned.

One other complaint is proof-reading. This book could have used a better dose of it. There are not that many mistakes, and I may just be nitpicking, but there were a few points where I said to myself "How did they not catch that?" For instance, in a diagram discussing gridlines, the caption references the gridlines that are supposed to be "indicated in red". Ok, this is good, except for the fact that the grid lines are actually blue. This is such a small mistake, I know, but I would think that the publishers would be more concerned about spotting inconsistencies like this.

Overall though, this is a great buy. I really enjoyed it. If you are still not sure about the purchase, you can always visit www.delmarlearning.com. I went to the website out of curiosity and discovered that they have a few sample chapters posted online in PDF format for most of their books. A big help!

Jackie Brenner's book is essentially a photo essay dealing with the "grind" of being an exotic dancer on world famous Bourbon Street in New Orleans.

Photographed in black and white, the book is, at times, an unsettling look at the sad, matter-of-fact existence of the women who endure degradation for the sake of survival.

Other than some brief background notes, there is very little text as the photos speak more eloquently than any wordsmith could manage.

Some of the most compelling images are of the younger women. Still youthful in body, the cracks in their souls leak out from their eyes. In some of the photos you can almost see their young smiles hardening into a jaded and lifeless gaze. The smiles may be there and they may be real but the joy shown is fleeting for this is a hard life.

The reader will find themselves lamenting the fate which has befallen these ladies. How can a woman voluntarily enter this trade? Some do it to support children or drug habits but they all have their reasons and it isn't our place to judge.

Of course the photos of the patrons feature beaming smiles indicative of good times had and of dollars tucked into garters. In the end it's all about the money but after the patrons move on, there's the cold slap of real life.

The truly saddest photo is of a woman who is not old but no longer young. Her looks have receded like Katrina's flood waters, leaving a wrinkled and damaged landscape that will never be the same. What kind of future can she expect? A cottage in the country with grandchildren running in the picket-fenced yard? Not likely. Sad...

The book is a coffee table-sized edition and the photography is excellent. Ms. Brenner's use of lighting allows the shadow to step forward as if it were protecting the subject from some unseen danger. The most remarkable aspect of Ms. Brenner's book is how these ladies have managed to maintain their dignity in a most undignified setting.

Brenner's photographs report the New Orleans strip-club scene in a gritty style. The noirish, realistic photos capture the words from the lines of a poem "The Grind of Bourbon Street" used as an epigraph for the 50 or so photos--"The grind of/merely surviving the harshness of living..." This "grind" is juxtaposed with the "grind" of the crowds and of the music. Yet the women do not appeal for sympathy; nor are they photographed to evoke sympathy. Neither are Brenner's photos moralistic in that they belittle or judge the women. Their work as strippers is merely and equivalently another kind of work, like the work of other laborers or blue-collar workers. The scenes with women smoking and drinking sodas offstage and even the shots of them in their nearly naked performances have a matter-of-fact quality. Here the flesh of breasts, buttocks, backs, and thighs is simply another element of the scene, like the excited or jaded men with their beers. Everyone is playing a prescribed role. Only the few photos of younger women, little more than girls, with faintly frantic looks for means of escape suggest the vacuousness of the enterprise sucking the adult women and men into it with no hope or desire of return at the point they have reached. After Katrina, one will wait and see if this aspect of the famed New Orleans Bourbon Street night life comes back.
