The fellow on the cover, Clyde Branton, was my wife's X husbands grandfathers brother, so we had to read this book. It is well done, and a very interesting read. There is a lot of well researched history of early Oregon in this book.

Fantastic true story-when will the movie be released?

I rate this book as one of the top ten books I have ever read. Why? The author is crisp, militarily accurate, spontaneous, romantic beyond belief.
This book is a MUST READ for anyone considering military service, with special emphasis on those brave enough to be fighter jocks.
It is also more romantic than any other "war" book I have ever read.
My thirty-two years of active duty tell's me this author is telling it exactly as World War II was for those back home, and for those brave men and women who fought in both the European and Pacific theaters.

One of the very few books in my 55 years of age that I truly could not stop reading until the last thrilling page.

If you love the film, buy the screenplay.
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2001-08-17
When it came to developing movies enveloped with romance, murder and intrigue, no one performed a more convincing job than Alfred Hitchcock, arguably one of the greatest directors of suspenseful films. North by Northwest is perhaps one of the most exciting and entertaining films ever created with a brilliant screenplay and star cast. Roger Thornhill, played by Cary Grant, is mistaken for a government agent when he is kidnapped by two mysterious men in the beginning. Then, he is on the run for his life, and even the police soon are after him for they believed he killed a prestigious member of the United Nations. Now is your chance to own this fabulous book containing the screenplay. Makes a great gift for film enthusiasts or anyone who loves to read a suspenseful novel.

The best non-fiction book ever written about the Midwest
Helpful Votes: 15 out of 15 total.
Review Date: 1998-12-18
I discovered this book when I was living in San Francisco, and it convinced me to move back home to the Midwest. Le Sueur is an earthy, populist writer. This is a history of Minnesota, but its doesn't trouble itself with governors and generals. Le Sueur writes about Indians, farmers, cornhuskers, pioneers, the ordinary people who built the Midwest. And her descriptions of nature and weather are beautiful. She loved people, she loved her native country. If you're from the Midwest, buy this book. You'll either get homesick, or you'll be glad you never left home.

North Star is truly one of the all time unsung great dog hero portraits - that it's dedicated to Balto is very significant - there's no doubt in my mind that the author wrote this from his heart with a profound knowledge of dogs - very satisfying.....

The North-West Frontier: British India and Afghanistan, a Pictorial History 1839-1947

North-West Frontier well explained.
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2004-03-07
Michael Barthorp's book on one of the most turbulent areas of the British Empire has been reissued in a very welcome and well produced volume.

There is ample detail on the Pathans, or Pushtuns as they are more normally now called, the actual inhabitants of this rugged area. The main tribal groupings and their principal tendencies are neatly summarised together with a clear mapping of the area. Illustrations, all contemporary, indicate the look of the areas in which actions were fought: by no means were all arid scrub! The political dimensions of the struggles book are deftly assessed with each of the major wars receiving a clear narrative account. It would have been appreciated for there to have been maps of individual actions, though the list of engagements suggests the inhibiting cost of such a provision.

The book may therefore be recommended as an excellent survey of the issues and actions of the period and place, covering the whole of the British Empire's connection with the Frontier. It is a reasanable and certainly accurate synopsis of the political ramifications whose complexity are daunting.

Northwest Coast Indians Coloring Book (Dover Pictorial Archives)
Published in Hardcover by Topeka Bindery (1989-12)
Author: David Rickman

Average review score:

Very realistic with extremely interesting descriptions.
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2001-02-27
David Rickman's pictures are quite realistic and detailed without being too chaotic or confusing. He shows what common life was like for the northwest coast indians before English people came and destroyed their society. His Introduction talks about how these tribes were alike and how they differed, what they needed in their relationship to the land and the environment, what the religions of these peoples was like, and how they honored the ancestors and spirits of the land and animals. Normally when you think of a coloring book you think of children, but this book is so detailed that not just children but adults will want to color in it. The pages are thick enough that crayons, colored pencils, and ink markers can be used. Also, not only are the people in the pictures interesting but the backgrounds and animals are as well.
