The town of Coulee Dam was my home town so I found this pictorial very interesting. Great pictures from the past.

Most of us had our first time reading about the age of exploration in grade school, and this book will make a second look more interesting. The author brings to light many unknowns, eccentric Europeans that risked their lives for the sake of knowledge, fame, riches, and all of the above. It is difficult to believe that historically this era of exploration is not so long ago. Two huge continents remained still largely unknown to the outside world until fairly recent times. The source of the Nile, an ancient mystery was only solved around the time of the American Civil War. The author covers the well known explorers like Pizarro, Cortez, and Cook and has a very skillful way of wandering off the storyline, in a good way. He mentions motives, anecdotes, ties up loose ends, or updates to the present to show the significance of the subject. Even though the book is dated, 1974, some of the theories discussed are still being debated, such as the origin and spread of syphilis, or the migration of the early Polynesian peoples. It is difficult to find a book containing the accounts of explorers such as Burton, Speke, and Captain James Cook.
The author also puts forth some of his own observations, one example being, that the two major cultures in the Americas at the time of the Spanish landing in the Americas, both had the myth of the light skinned, blue eyed bearded gods coming from the East, conversely Europe always had the myth that there is land to the West out in the Atlantic.
Well worth the read, for the main story or the interesting side stories

For the train buff or the model railroader, this is the best book I've seen covering the Great Northern's passenger trains. Breakdowns of the composition of the various 'name' passenger trains from the steam to the diesel era, giving the types of power, and styles of cars in the various consists. Many beautiful pictures in color and black and white. A very worthwhile addition to the rail enthusiast's library and a 'must have' for the diehard follower of the Great Northern.

What a fun book! It's easy to read and informative. The descriptive language encourages you to visualize each entry. I plan to use it to encourage research at my elementary school with this book. Students studying Washington State, and environmental education will find this resource very helpful.

This was an interesting and well-written book. I'm sorry to see that it's out of print. It contains a lot of interesting information on the desert's plans, animals, and geology. It appeared to be very well researched. and the author seemed to have a great appreciation for this unique part of the country. If you are interested in the desert I would recommend that you try to find a copy of this book.

This is a very different kind of travel book--and it happens to be one we enjoyed immensely on a week-long trip to eastern Oregon. Instead of a straight listing of sights to see, the author has selected her favorite areas and they come with plenty of recommended things to do and places to stay. It's rather like having a chance to sit down and ask a well-known travel writer to give the inside scoop on the very best locations. We hiked the high Wallowas and drove through Leslie Gulch, discovering fascinating places we never knew existed. We found this book to be inspiring and well-researched. The author has obviously spent time in these locations and this is a refreshing change from ordinary travel books that simply offer a list of attractions without help in putting together a vacation that is filled with a variety of great adventures.

Land mgmt. professionals (foresters, wildlife biologists, ranchers & forest land owners) often have need to evaluate their mgmt. activities. Photographic monitoring (PM) is a fast, simple, & effective method. This report discusses ground-based PM, which means using photos taken at a specific site to monitor conditions or change. It includes 2 systems: (1) comparison photos, whereby a photo is used to compare a known condition with field conditions to estimate some parameter of the field condition; & (2) repeat photos, whereby several pictures are taken of the same tract of ground over time to detect change. These deal with fuel loading, herbage utilization, & public reaction to scenery

I have been growing plants and herbs (and using them also) since before I can remember, but, still living in the Northwest there are a few problems when herbs and such are involved, and trying to grow them successfully. I also have a ton of books on growing cultivating etc. But in my opinion, and this is just personal mind you from being up in the foothills of the Cascade Moutains and experiencing the climatic buggaboos that you will get here, this book is the best I have found. If you live in the Northwest specificly on the western side of the Cascades you HAVE to get this book.
