Northwest Books

Any general aviation pilot who flies in the west - or dreams of flying in the west - must have this book. It is a catalog of dreams and adventures, waiting for your plane, there for the taking. Reed White has selected and explored dozens of fly-in destinations in Montana, Oregon, Washington, Idaho and Wyoming. They range from dirt Forest Service strips to paved full service airports, from rugged ridges to romantic getaways. Destinations listed offer something for every taste, from high country backpacking and camping to luxury resorts catering to virtually every need. In some cases the only accompdation is camping - you will be told what amenities if any are available. Near by hiking and fishing possibilities are always described. If ground transportation will be required, options are listed, ranging from hitchiking to rental cars. Other places described include listings of bed and breakfast inns, hotels and motels, restaurants etc., generally including rates charged. Local atractions are well covered. Reed White is an adventurer, and "Flyer's Recreation Guide" is in some ways a diary of his trips. But he bends over backwards to make sure any competent pilot with a suitable plane can follow in his footsteps. If you have a plane and a long weekend coming, this book will surely give you a lot of inspiration. Any pilot who claims to fly for fun and does not find this book fascinating might as well turn in his medical.

We used this book on a 10 day trip to Oregon and Washington and had a great experience. Any of the Fodor's recommendations we tried were excellent, including scenic highways to take, restaurants to try, and hotels to stay in on the coast. We had a great trip and much of it can be attributed to the excellent tips in this book. It's important to check costs of entry to different places before going, though, because the book can't stay updated with the changes these places make. We found a few places where prices have changed since it was published.

FODOR'S PACIFIC NORTHWEST, 17TH EDITION is a great guide to Oregon, Washington, and the Canadian province of British Columbia, with extensive sections on Portland, Seattle, Tacoma, and Vancouver, as well as a full guide to all of the national parks and other outdoor activities on both sides of the U.S.-Canadian border. The sections on major cities (Portland, Eugene, Tacoma, Seattle, Vancouver) offer full coverage of the best attractions, dining, nightlife, shopping, and lodging in those areas. The latter includes University Village and Easy Street Records in Seattle, Clackamas Town Center Mall, Lloyd Center Mall, and Washington Square Mall in Portland, and the Tacoma Mall in Tacoma. This is a wonderful book which you shouldn't pass up.

John Haines has often quoted the novelist Hermann Broch: "Political indifference is ethical indifference." Haines adds that soon it becomes esthetic indifference as well. "For the Century's End," Haines's latest book, contains poems that are exemplary of political, ethical and esthetic commitment. Poems such as "Blood," "Politics and the Dead," and "Kent State, 1970" show a meticulous attention to craft, a deep, melancholy sense of history, and an abiding sympathy and outrage on behalf of history's victims. In poems such as "In the House of Wax," he creates grim historic panoramas in the sparest of words: "Crowned heads and axes fall,/thugs and jailors rise/and displace each other/in this long, uneasy walk/we have littered/with claims and captions." Not many contemporary poems can claim to be "important"--i.e. to combine excellence of phrase and image with urgency of message. These are, and these do.

I found this book to be very good as are all Ford R Bryan's books.

It's already slightly out of date but it's still an essential guide to Forest Park hiking. Through this book I found some of the most amazing sights within the city of Portland. I'd never have hiked some of those trails without the book to give me the confidence. After all, if the book shows the trail who am I to question its existence?

These books are excellent. Great historical value and the clothes and dolls are awesome. I really have enjoyed just reading the books and will enjoy them for years.

I loved this book. I have given it as gifts to many of my friends and they all loved it also. If you are a pilot or just a "want-to-be" read this book!

Finally a publisher has the foresight to republish this landmark study of the French Regime in Wisconsin and the old Northwest as told from a "western" point of view. Published originally by the State Historical Society of Wisconsin in 1925 this reprint with a comprehensive index excites many genealogists and historians interested in the Huguenots, the French-Indian War, the fur trade, exploration of the old Northwest, and the French residents of Wisconsin.

The first part of the book provides information regarding the early explorations of the Mississippi River and Great Lakes in the 17th century, the second section covers the 18th century, from the Fox Wars to the end of the French regime in the Northwest in 1761.

Of much interest to Genealogists is Chapter 18 from page 386 to 405, French Residents in Wisconsin.

Ms. Kellogg also wrote "Early Narratives of the Northwest 1634-1699," "Frontier Advance on the Upper Ohio 1778-1779," "Frontier Retreat on the Upper Ohio 1779-1781" and wrote with Reuben Gold Thwaites, "Documentary History of Dunmore's War, 1774" and "The Revolution on the Upper Ohio, 1775-1777," all books hard to find and groundbreaking studies.

Though 82 years old, "The French Regime in Wisconsin and the Northwest" is a very readable history that has stood the time test and deserves a new market.

Great illustrations, interesting photos and an informative text on all anadromous and freshwater fishes of Alaska. Ideal book for fish enthusiasts and fisherman. Very strong on taxonomy and description of species. My most used reference for whitefish and ciscoes.
