Fire in Her Soul is a captivating book about a lady who campaigns for the right to vote in 1888. It is such an intriguing story. I couldn't put the book down and stayed up all night reading it.

wonderful vignettes of a dying job

Like many people, the author spent several summers atop a fire lookout in the middle of nowhere. He has a thorough list of almost every single lookout that was ever commissioned in OR, WA, and MT - which ones are still around, which ones are still operational, and which ones were ironically burnt by the Forest Service. In addition, there are plenty of colorful stories about the brave men and women who lived a very unique existence.

For Gabrielino history, this is the book to get.

If you've ever tried to learn about the people who inhabited the Los Angeles area prior to colonization, you understand what a frustrating task it is. It comes in bits and pieces, often almost accidentally discovered (ever try looking up "Gabrielino" in a library computer?).

In a well-organized, clearly-written manner, William McCawley has taken the scraps out of the basket and fashioned a beautiful quilt that brings light and life to an oft-maligned people.

He has done an amazing amount of research in putting together this volume. If "God is in the details", then it is the details of religion and custom that elevate a people from the mere "diggers" I learned about in school to an intelligent society well-adapted to its environment. This is an essential resource for anyone studying or teaching about California (including fourth-grade teachers), and invaluable to those who simply enjoy learning more about Southern California history.

Fishing Alaska's streams, lakes, and salt water is often anything but a placid experience. Sometimes anglers are hapless players in a comedy, ducking fly hooks, dodging competitive bears, and diving in to retrieve runaway fishing poles. You might say it looks like the Keystone Kops at times. As sports editor for the Anchorage Daily News, Lew Freedman has heard stories you wouldn't believe. But who says fishermen are truthful? Here's a collection of Lew's favorites: wacky tales from the water's edge.

A Mountie torn between duty and love in the Canadian north.
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 1998-12-14
The Flaming Forest is unapologetic northern Romance in the grandest tradition. Curwood's love for the Canadian north is a little jarring at first, at least to a jaded Canadian such as myself, but in his hands Canada is transformed into a land of mystery and myth, a place where the Mountie still gets his man and the French Canadian rivermen (with their scarlet headscarves) are forever singing, and where the French Canadian daughter of a river baron is too lovely for words (although Curwood sure does try), and where bad guys have names like "Black Roger Audemard". At the same time, the novel was less of an adventure than a love story/ mystery. The mystery was a page-turner, and the love story was all you could ask for -- just don't expect a two-fisted, pulp style adventure.

A great follow-up to the first Trout & Beyond, with more esoteric adventures of Jim & friends in the real world hunting real fish most of us wouldn't fish for in the first place. Buy them both!
