What it was like to be young in the 1950s

Full disclosure: I am the author's cousin and appear several places in this book. That said, most of the book is about people I've never met and places that I have never been, not least of which was the Arctic. This book really brings out what it was like to be coming of age in the 50s. The author tells a lot of funny stories, all of them on himself. Anyone who was growing up then, especially if they had time in the military service, will enjoy it.

I just got back from a mountain vacation and enjoyed reading this book. It certainly is well done and will bring back memories for anyone who has served in the military, no matter which branch, although I admit I don't know of anyone else who got 30 demerit's in basic training!

Having read this intriguing and adventurous book, it leaves one with a sense of having personally sat down with the author and listening to his well told military and personal history. It is written with ease and comfort, without pretense, much like hearing "Sea Stories" by a favorite uncle. Some parts of the book are painfully honest and gritty which adds much credence to this epic story about a young man's life in the U.S. Coast Guard.

The book is packed with eye witness accounts of a truly historic chapter in U.S. and world maritime history. Much of the book is based on personal journals, logs, the writer's letters to home, and collaboration of others who shared this Arctic adventure and subsquent circumnavigation of the North American Continent. This book is richly endowed with countless historic photos and illustrations that add flesh to this precisely written account.

Mr. Juge's book not only depicts his own story, but that also of the ship on which he served while in Alaska and the Arctic, the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Storis. The Storis has a rich history beginning in WW2 and serving The USA for 65 years of meritorious service. This is a book within a book and is a must read for naval history buffs.

After finishing this book, I felt like I was parting with a former shipmate and close friend. It will be nice to take it from my bookshelf and revisit these remote places and personal trials of a boy becoming a man while serving his country in the U.S. Coast Guard.

Shiver me timbers

I have to say that even though I love food and finding awesome recipes, I rarely use the awesome cookbooks and recipes that I already have. EXCEPT THIS ONE! I can honestly say that I have made and tasted several of Kathy Casey's recipes. I really like that the ingredients are all easy to find in your local, normal grocery store. (B/c I want quality AND a one-stop shop.) I also love the flavors that come from the finished product. Try the crab cakes or endive salad!

This beautiful coffee table cookbook has it all; from creative uses of apples and hazelnuts to raspberries and rhubarb (w/honey mousse!). Crab, salmon, muscles, oysters, and halibut all here as well as pork loin, lamb, chicken and duck. And the cocktails and desserts are spot on for our region. As a northwest native and editor of The Good Home Cookbook: More Than 1,000 Classic American Recipes, I can say that these recipes well represent our region in a classy, tasteful and accurate manner. I highly recommend it!

Last night we finally got rid of the left over turkey from Thanksgiving and I get to think about fixing something else. I think I'm in a shrimp mood, and this book just fell open to page 66 with Sesame Roasted Shrimp Sticks with Zippy Apricot Dipping Sauce. Spicy, quick, easy and they look absolutely delicious.

As you would expect, this book from the Northwest has a lot of seafood. More ways to cook salmon that you can count (well, really you could count them) including some ways that are quite different from the others I've seen.

Another food area that has a lot of production in the Northwest is fruit, and some of her combinations of fresh fruit with farly shart ingredients like blue cheese look like the evenings side dishes are well taken care of.

Complaints, well there's one - Martini's are sacred things, you don't go messing them up with things like cucumber and sake (see page 38) - you don't even make them out of vodka - yuch! And Seattle Expresso Martini isn't really a Martini at all. Then again, the Slow-Roasted Martini Short Ribs (page 134) maybe I won't do shrimp tonight after all.

There are a lot of things here that you don't see in other cookbooks.

Always beautiful!

I just picked up Kathy Casey's new book and I love it. I must admit that I am one of those cooks that needs pictures to entice me to make something and Kathy's cookbooks always have them. Her salad recipes are to die for. So many salads are just so bland, but the Endive salad with Roasted pears is amazing. I'm also a big fan of her French Seasoning salt. I put it on everything!

This book is one of the most amazing publishing accomplishments I have seen. The authors and their friends have accumulated 1700 superb photographs of marine life, especially the tiny and obscure invertebrates that almost no one has even seen or suspected, let alone photographed. (Where else are you going to find photos of neon sea-fleas and parasitic copepods in the wild?) Many of the animals herein are not even described scientifically. I studied fisheries development for years and thought I knew something about marine life, but I never knew there were so many worms and snails and tunicates out there, let alone did I ever see them or photos of them. Everyone interested in nature or biology should have this book, or at least look at it, just to see what amazing things there are in the world. It is of interest far beyond the narrow confines of Northwest Coast shores.

hard to top...

so I'm no expert on marine life, but I'm very interested in the subject. I got this book and had high expectations that were more than met. The photography is excellent, the organization is excellent, and the contents extensive. I really like how they tell you both the common and the scientific names, and how they have some short descriptions of behaviors or charactoristics. I actually got it for my boyfriend because he wants to study to be a marine biologist and i saw the other reviews by people who were in related fields, and they made it sound like a book that would be useful even to an expert but not only useful to an expert. And it is. He loves the book (says its one of the best gifts he has ever gotten) and was very impressed by the quality of the contents, he uses it all the time. Bottom line the book is awesome i would reccommend it to ANYONE who loves ocean life.

This book is a blessing for us tidepool/beach explorers in the Pacific Northwest because of its wonderful, clear photographs. It saves us many hours of tedious and frustrating puzzling over technical jargon trying to figure out the identity of whatever amazing creature has captured our hearts. The volunteers at the Port Townsend Marine Science Center on the Olympic Peninsula of Washington have already practically worn out their first copy from looking up critters and plants that show up in the tanks via the flow-through seawater system. Many mysteries have been solved, and many fascinating tidbits of natural history gleaned to share with the visitors to the exhibits. Books like this will open the eyes of a society blind to our own environment, like the Peterson guides did a couple generations ago.
All praises and cliches apply: "a picture is worth a thousand words", "greatly needed and long over-do"... Consider this a definite rave review for a timely book. Now all we need is a waterproof edition!

Relentless Curiosity

Review Date: 2005-08-25
Readers beware! It's much easier to open this book than to close it. The author's obvious love of trivia, not to mention her love of Montana, is infectious. She is relentless in her pursuit of the obscure. We learn, for example, that the town of Ismay, population 20, changed its name to Joe to honor quarterback Joe Montana. Yes, but did Mr. Montana ever visit this town? And what is the montly salary of its mayor?

The result of this obsessive curiosity is a book full of quirky facts and colorful characters you will find nowhere else. It will put a smile on the face of a transplanted Montanan (like myself), but would also be a great find for anyone planning a trip to Montana. It's the kind of book that would normally be impossible to find for all those with the misfortune of living outside the state. Thank goodness for Amazon!

Kudos to Mrs. Spencer for researching and writing a book that had so many interesting facts that even an old Montanan like me had never heard. I highly recommend this book, I have read it twice and still haven't put it down.

If you like anecdotal stories about life in the late 1800s/early 1900s, you will like this book. It tells the story of a family that moves from the central ozarks of Missouri to Northwestern Colorado in the 1920s. It is autobiographical in nature, but the author is a superb storyteller and the pictures he paints of life in and around Craig, Colorado during the Great Depression are poignant and vivid. (True for the telling of the trip from Missouri to Colorado, as well.) Anyone who is interested in Colorado history, life during the Great Depression, or simple human interest stories about real poepl in real life will enjoy this book. For those who are not related to the author, the brief sections about family geaneologies might be a little boring, but these are a small part of the book and do not detract from the overall book. If you are from Northwest Colorado, who knows? Your name might be in the book (or at least one of your ancestors). There are also a few stories dating before the life of the author concerning events that were told to him by the people involved.

This is absolutely one of the most beautiful cookbooks I have ever had the pleasure to add to my library. It could as easily be presented as a travelogue with recipes, as it contains sections for all of the Pacific Northwest; Vancouver and British Columbia, the Islands, Washington, Oregon and Idaho...and is so informative and full of images, I want to go there right now. I vacillate between wanting to visit the restaurants where some of the recipes originated, and wanting to take a stab at making them myself; and the pictures of the finished products make me want to eat the page. All recipes are complete with a history of the dish and concise and readable instructions, and most, if not all, look quite easy to replicate. There are some that include ingredients that would be hard to find (Yelloweye Rockfish and Singing Scallops comes to mind) but I'm sure other (lesser in the eyes of Pacific Northwest natives, I'm sure) variations would work as well for the dish. I am looking forward to trying Geoduck and Green Onion Hash; Wild Mushroom Ragout; Basque Onions in Sour Cream; Peppered Flank Steak with Oregon Blue Cheese Sauce; Stout Braised Beef with Onions and Sour Cream; and the Baked Blueberry Clafouti looks divine. There isn't a page that doesn't suck you in and you realize that your mouth is watering as you read. If you can obtain a copy of this cookbook (a caveat; it is a coffee table sized book), it will satisfy both your yen to read about the Pacific Northwest as an eventual destination and excite your imagination towards creating some outstanding dishes for your next dinner party. Highly recommended.

I was not familiar with Kurt Dammeier before receiving a copy of his book, but I was certainly familiar with his contribution to the culinary influences of the Pacific Northwest. I am a fan of his artisan cheeses and have had a Pasta & Co dish at my table or presented at a potluck on more than one occasion. We are lucky to have him among us and in the company of the likes of Tom Douglas as another Pacific Northwest institution. The book itself is sheer art if you, like me, enjoy reading recipes and looking at the pictures of the final result. In addition, the recipes are sheer delight for the palate. The black eyed pea and mustard green salad was a recent hit with my party crowd. The Scollop Orzo with Wild Mushrooms and Sherry was a quick after work dinner pleaser for me and a husband who can be a bit fussy about his food. Kurt demonstrates what makes Pacific Northwest cuisine special and spectacular by making use of and showcasing ingredients that abound in our waters and on our shores. And he does so to perfection! He takes his bows but shares the spotlight with those who have been an influence on his development as a restaurenteur, entrepreneur and sure to be Pacific Northwest Icon.

One of the best cookbooks I've ever owned. Not only does this showcase the usual suspects of Pacific Northwest American cuisine (hazelnuts, salmon, etc.), but also teaches how to use American artisan cheeses in creative, delicious ways. With the tips on selecting different cheese types (semi-hard, semi-soft, soft-ripened, hard graters), you're given the freedom within the recipes to mix and match different cheeses to create macaroni, strata and, yes, salmon that's all your own. I personally recommend mixing up the star Beecher's Macaroni and Cheese recipe with French Ossau-Iraty, Mt. Townsend Trailhead (also a great Seattle-area cheese), Beecher's Flagship and Tillamook Sharp Cheddar. Positively sinful. All of the recipes we've tried so far have turned out great, with the exception of the crab cakes, which were a little too bready. The instructions are extremely detailed and user-friendly.

The photography and profiles of influential chefs in the area make a gorgeous presentation, a delight on the coffee table as well as the kitchen. Makes a great gift for friends around the country, as well as local foodie fans.

I was hooked from the introduction when the writer describes discovering boxes of her great-great grandfather's letters and papers and realizing she had a story to tell. From that great beginning, this book continued to hold me in its vivid, dramatic rendering of California history and of this man, a true tycoon. Until this book, I had not heard of Hellman , but now I see his influence regularly in my life in California, starting with Wells Fargo banks. Hellman not only started this bank, but the author tells an amazing--and chillingly timely--account of how Hellman stopped an 1893 bank panic singlehandedly. If you're interested in California history (imagine a time when the streets of LA were dirt, as were the floors in many homes), immigrant history, Jewish history, and a juicy story of wheeling-dealing tycoons, you couldn't find a better scribe than this writer and her elegant, exciting, and well-told history.

A great read

In this meticulously researched book, Frances Dinkelspiel tells the all-but-forgotten story of Isaias Hellman, a man who was as well-known in his era as Warren Buffet is in our's. Hellman was one of the leading financiers of early California, a banking pioneer who laid the foundations for what is now one of the world's biggest economies. Dinkelspiel patched together his story by going through tens of thousands of pages of his personal papers, yet her deft story telling weaves his personal history seamlessly into the dramatic events of his times.

Loved it. Towers of Gold is fascinating as a wonderful look backward at California history, but it's also really interesting - in these difficult (read: horrific) economic times - to see how an enterprising man with a load of optimism and good ideas was able to change the financial and social landscape of an entire state. Let's just say we could use some of that vision right now.

Fascinating!

To read Towers of Gold is to step back into a fascinating and unpredictable period in California's history. Thoroughly researched and meticulously told, the story of Isaias Hellman is more than an archetypal rags-to-riches American tale--it's a story of how a Jewish immigrant, unhampered by Old World prejudices, helped shape the state. Anyone interested in the history of our country's ailing financial system will find interesting parallels.

Great read about California history!

I can't recommend "Towers of Gold" highly enough. I've lived in San Francisco for twenty years, but after reading Frances Dinkelspiel's book, realize I hardly knew anything about California history: L.A. and San Francisco alike. This is also an artfully told rags-to-riches tale starring Isais Hellman, who around the turn-of-the-century left Europe basically penniless, but liberated from the oppressive antiseminitism of the Old World was free to help orchestrate the very creation of L.A., transforming it from a dusty outpost into, well, Los Angeles.

Throughout the history of the "Dreamer Religion" Nez Perce's trials and tribulations with the white man, truthfulness was their bond. Yellow Wolf tells his story factually and simply. The resourcefulness and unmatched bravery of Yellow Wolf and his comrades is truly amazing. A recommended read.

As a child growing up on the Camas Prairie. I was told by my Great Grandma. How her mother as a child & her parents had gone to the Fort at Mount Idaho to seek refuge from the NezPerce in 1877. Years later I was working in a small bar in the town of Whitebird, Idaho (Where the first battle occured.) One day a friend brought me this book and told me that he thought that I might be interested in reading it. That was almost 12 years ago, and I think I've read "Yellow Wolf" at least once a year sense then. Me,my husband and my 2 daughters (19 & 11) have traveled almost all of the NezPerce Trail. This book brings you into the lives of the non-treaty NezPerce on their flight for freedom. They were not a hostile people, but were forced from their homes & their way of life. You feel their pain and suffering from the begining to the end of this book. I feel it is a must read for all poeple. Another good book by L.V. McWhorter "Hear Me My Chiefs!" NezPerce legand & history

If it wasn't for Mcworter's unwillingness to manipulate "anthropology" like the "father of Anthropology," Franz Boaz, we would never have such an honest and compelling narrative of an Aboriginal American's point of view. From Boaz's approach, Yellow Wolf's childhood is equally important. To McWorter, an amateur anthropologist, Yellow Wolf's story IS the important statement. If you are interested in the Aboriginals' story, this is worth your read.

I'm a history student who has researched the Nez Perce history for several classes. I first read this book long before college and it sparked a life long interest in the Nez Perce history and the Nez Perce War of 1877. I live in Montana so my "backyard" is where most of this history took place. Yellow Wolf is, in my mind, the MOST credible book on the war I have read. Reading Yellow Wolf and then the book by Gen O.O. Howard it is simple to see the half truths and blatant lies the Government published in its efforts to remove the Nez Perces from their land. McWhorter took Yellow Wolf to several sites where Yellow Wolf pointed out things such as rifle pits in the distance that, until McWhorter was right next to them, were invisible to the eye. An excellent book that I have used time and again in giving lectures and writing papers. A must have for anyone researching the Nez Perce Tribal history.

Go back in time and live, travel and fight with the Nez Perce as they seek to return to their own lands. Feel their utter despair as gradually they are chased down by the US Army murdered, and finally with so few left, forced to live the lives of captives on a reservation. This book brings home the enormity of the crime committed by the US Government of the day, not only against the Nez Perce but all of the Native Americans, it should be compulsive reading for all US schoolchildren. It is without doubt one of the most absorbing books I have read on the subject of Native Americans. Dont take my word for it, read it yourself, you will not regret it.

This is one of Robert Carmeron's last books and it is one of his best. Seattle really lends itself well to this kind of photography, the city is so naturally blessed. The photography in this book is classic Cameron and the photos are so vivid. I recommend this book to anyone with an interst in this beautiful city or just an interest in great photography in general, you won't be disappointed.

Seattle is set in a very diverse geographical region. This diversity provides for ample breathtakingly beautiful and lush photographs of the metropolitan area. Lakes, mountains, trees, islands, bays, rivers - this area has it all and is cleverly photographed in this Robert Cameron book.
The book is fairly up to date although citizens or connosieurs of Seattle may notice the dated-ness of the book by the conspicuous absense of some new construction in the downtown area and the changing condition of other areas of the city. If you like pictorials, this is a great one to own and probably one of the best of the Seattle Metropolitan Area. I highly recommend it.

Stunning quality; if you've been there, you will easily be able to pick out your favorite spots, despite the distance. The captions are a little dry, but the pictures make this aesthetic book one of value.

The pictures are very beautiful !

Everybody who has any relation to Seattle should have this book! To people who live there it shows their city from a different point of view. To people who like to get a detailed impression of the city and its close environment I really recommend it ! But this book (in my eyes) is not made for people who look for a "tourist guide".
