Archibald McDonald of Glencoe. I have seen his name in various places growing up in Washington. Here is a wonderful biography of his life. What an amazing life he led. Growing up in Glencoe, Scotland, sight of the infamous 1692 massacre, he was the 13th child and needing a future. Recommended to the Earl of Selkirk, as a "Gentleman" his life in North America and as a leader begins. He leads a group of Highland refugees from the clearances to settle in on the Red River in what is today Manitoba, Canada. This colony is the Earl of Selkirk's dream and nightmare in one. Archibald McDonald goes head to head with the fur traders and eventually becomes one when he joins the Hudson's Bay Company. Here his life takes off into the western frontier. We follow his life to Astoria where he marries his short lived first wife, a daughter of the powerful Comconly of the Chinook tribe and father's Ranald MacDonald, who in his own time becomes the first Native American to live in Japan. Then Archibald moves up in the ranks passing through Fort Vancouver, Kamloops, Langley, Nisqually, and finally Fort Colvile leaving his mark on all. His numerous innovations and energy shapes and changes the Hudson's Bay Company and allowing it to expand and grow. He meats his second wife and stays married to her, rare for European fur traders, a part French and Native woman whom he truly loves and she bears him numerous children and becomes a respected lady in her time. Archibald provides well for his family and finally retires back to the Red River area on a he purchased and built called Glencoe House. He retires a leader in his community and respected adviser to the Canadian Government. Truly a remarkable man. Jean Murray Cole presents him in a fine light in with this smooth read and the tale never dulls. A great read.

This is a nautical chart atlas of the pacific northwest onto which is printed historical events and the places where they occured. It is great for anyone traveling the waters, or for anyone who is fascinated with the area or loves sailing.
My wife and I used this as one of our navigation atlas' on a 5 month sail up the inland waterway to Alaska and refered to it daily. There is something fascinating about knowing who has been there before.
I would highly recommend this, and its companion edition on Alaska, to anyone who is planning to travel in the area, even if on a cruise ship.

Boaters around here know the Douglasses as the king and queen of cruisers, and their handbooks are our bibles. They've been everywhere, done everything, and they take *really* good notes. This guide is one result; it includes details on every anchorage, waypoint and description in the area. If you plan to spend any time in Pacific Northwest waters, this book is a must have.

When a company becomes so big that they can flaunt the laws, buy science, manufacture evidence, and manipulate expert witness testimony, and when fines and litigation are not a deterrent to bad business practices, then governments can't protect its people.

I bought this as a primer for my (future) trip to Fairbanks. Some consider this frontier town, and not "Los" Anchorage, to be the "real" Alaska. The authors include interesting historical tidbits, demographics and myths. I've donated most of my books to charity, but this one's a keeper :)

Finding The People Who Flaked The Stone At English Camp: San Juan Island by Angela E. Close (Professor of Anthropology, University of Washington) is a seminal and scholarly study of American approaches to lithic analysis - that is, attempts to learn more about natural history through the study of the stones of the earth. Especially focusing upon the excavation of English Camp on San Juan island, Finding The People Who Flaked The Stone At English Camp applies an approach based on attempts to trace the life-histories of all excavated artifacts, from raw material procurement to discard and entry into archaeological record, and concludes that women did a great deal of the tool manufacture at the English Camp site. A highly precise and technical scientific study and persuasive discourse.
