This excellent book reviews the history of the Oregon Caves, the Oregon Caves National Monument, and the historic buildings at the monument, such as The Chateau and Chalet. The author, Steve Mark, is the National Park Service historian for the Oregon Caves. Domain of the Cavemen is the official Historic Resource Study of Oregon Caves National Monument. As such it is a detailed but very readable document and includes extensive research notes to back up the information presented. This book features lots of historic photos and copies of historic ads for the Caves. Published by the U.S. National Park Service, 2006.

Domestic market activity in solid wood

Solid wood (SW) is important to the const'n., mfg., & shipping segments of the U.S. economy. In 1998, 19.6 billion cubic feet, roundwood equivalent, of all timber products were consumed in the U.S. About 87 percent of this was for industrial products, & 13 percent for fuelwood. SW products & pulpwood products each account for about half of the industrial roundwood consumed. This report examines SW timber products consumption in the U.S. over the past 40-45 years, relates changes in consumption to economic, social, & institutional factors during the period, & presents estimates of consumption in major end-use markets. Trends in timber products production, foreign trade, & domestic consumption over the past half century also are examined. Illus

If you laughed the first time you read one of these, here is your chance to laugh again. If you cried -- no -- not suppose to do that -- but you know what I mean -- then here is your chance to do whatever again. These are a nice selection of those articles Mike wrote to us that he got paid to do for us. This is really home groan stuff!
Oh, and if you are not from Alaska but want to get a ring side seat to what it is like living here, then this is that seat.
Update! And now Mike is one of our most esteemed legislators doing his best in Juneau! The stories that are bound to come out of this should be wonderful reading. I look forward to them Mike!

Although pitched at children ages 4-8, this book could effectively serve as a brief introduction to old growth forests of the Pacific Northwest for any reader. The story follows a Douglas fir tree's life cycle, including its vital role after death. The well-chosen color photographs clearly present the animals and plants of this wondrous ecosystem, and the text descriptions, though concise, include enough colorful adjectives to avoid boring readers. The design is much less busy than that of the Dorling Kindersley books, promoting a calmer pace that allows beginning readers to focus more clearly on the text.

Saving wilderness, one valley at a time

Like no other book, "Drawing Lines in the Forest" gets down to detail on how wilderness areas came to be protected, focusing on five case histories in Oregon and Washington. I saw some of these events myself, first as a student in Oregon in the 1950s, later as a federal land management official in Washington DC. Professor Marsh digs deep into archival sources to tell us how dedicated citizens managed to save wild forested valleys that had been slated for logging. They had to overcome bureaucratic opposition from the US Forest Service, reach compromises with the timber industry, and persuade the US Congress to act. You will read about their frustrations, their wit, and their perseverance. Right now, people all over the country are following in their footsteps with a new round of wilderness proposals. I highly recommend this book to the next generation of wilderness defenders and everyone who loves wild land.

This book was an excellent and entertaining story. I was drawn into it from the first few pages, and was curious to know what happened right up to the last. I was actually disappointed when I was finished. It was that enjoyable. It was very historically informative and well written. A must-read for anyone wanting more information about what our pioneer ancestors went through as they settled this country. I would like to see it required reading in middle school, and have recommended it to teachers that I know. I give this book my highest recommendation. Barbara has written an absolute treasure of a book. I thank her for it.

This book is a must for any cook who loves to read cookbooks in their spare time. All of the recipes are straight-forward, yet most of them are very unique combinations ie. walla-walla sweet onion jam, cheddar cheese soup with peppered bacon and ale. Each page also has a bit of Northwest history and accompanying photos, which are quite enjoyable. As Seattle-ite I can vouch that these recipes really do use locally available ingredients, but I think that cooks everywhere would enjoy and adapt these recipes. Only drawback is that pictures and text are black and white only.

And many non-specialists _should_ use this dictionary: they will find it immensely useful. For example, rabbis and pastors will find that when used judiciously it can provide as rich a store of illustrative material for messages on the Hebrew scriptures as Moulton and Milligan's _The Vocabulary of the Greek New Testament_ does for sermons from the New Testament.
The dictionary's greatest defect, in my view, is a relatively minor one: the authors' imperfect mastery of English sometimes leads them astray. For instance, the dictionary states that in Imperial Aramaic _bl'd hn_ (I use an apostrophe to represent 'ayin) means "excepted if," an expression which seems to have gone out of fashion among native speakers of English in the sixteenth century. Since the dictionary does not identify the language of an inscription when it quotes it, beginners may complain that it is often difficult for them to know just what they are looking at. But this is probably a virtue, not a defect: those beginners need to be reminded that they are, after all, using a grown-up's tool.
...this two-volume, 1300-page work is a steal. I have wept at its beauties.
