Buckle your seat belts and hang on to your hats, as R.H. Sheldon takes you on a wild, exhilarating ride in the lives of seven compelling characters who encounter each other, the elements, and God, all in the space of one action-packed, life-altering week.

When Sheldon first introduces us to the players in his novel, my first thought was how is he EVER going to connect this cast of diverse and distinct characters with each other? I think it is a testament to his skill as a storyteller that Sheldon weaves the chance encounters between a gay man in midlife crisis; an exemplary Mormon housewife and her righteous husband; an earth-mother massage therapist and her frustrated, under-achieving husband; a crusty old retired logger with a mind of his own; and a not easily fooled lesbian detective, all into one coherent and deftly put together tale of adventure, intrigue, spiritual questioning, elemental furies, and above all, personal growth.

By the end of the book, I felt that I was in the company of old friends that I had known for years, and had to remind myself that I had only "known" these people for less than a week, such is the talent of Sheldon for making his characters real people with real thoughts, real emotions, real conflicts, real successes, real lives. Yet, despite all this "reality," this story is as much a fabulous fantasy . . . a fantastic fable . . . a fun fiction.

The story takes place in the present day Pacific Northwest-all the way from San Juan Islands to Seattle to the town of Index in the Cascade Mountains and areas in between. Sheldon has a real feel for the geography and takes us there as we go along with the characters as they move through their world.

Sheldon exposes us to a dark side-blackmail, a suspicious death, a frame-up, resignation, a jealous explosion, and more, but also Sheldon lets us transcend to spiritual visions, heroism, the triumph of love, out-of-body experiences . . . and more.

This first novel is packed, it is charged, it literally takes off running, doesn't stop and astonishingly even after all that, it climaxes to almost every character's satisfaction!

So, yes, do hold on to your hats and do buckle that seatbelt for this wild, wild ride . . . but also relax . . . just let R. H. Sheldon do the driving . . . enjoy the scenery, your fellow travelers, the adventure behind each twist and turn in the road . . . you're in for a real treat!

Now in a newly revised and expanded edition, Danes In Wisconsin is a brief history of Danish immigrants and their contribution to Wisconsin settlement and history during the 1800's. Vintage black-and-white photographs illustrate this fascinating introduction, written for lay readers, to how Danish settlers lived and how they struggled to preserve their culture. New to revised and expanded addition are the letters of Andrew Frederickson, written over a forty-year span, which succinctly capture the personal experiences of a Dane who made a new life for himself in Wisconsin. A brief yet savory and entertaining tidbit of Wisconsin history, especially recommended as a gift or souvenir book.

Step aside tough guy: Mush Heart Barnes is in town
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2000-07-04
Toward the end of his life, Montana poet Richard Hugo wrote a detective/mystery novel that features a detective who is the antithesis of the tough, clipped speaking, hard drinking, noir detective so common in the American detective story. Al "Mush Heart" Barnes is a loveable, poetic, common man, a man with an eye for a good looking woman and a skill for solving murders. Barnes has moved to Plains, Montana in his retirement from the Seattle Police Department, and works as a Deputy Sheriff. Suddenly, two men are murdered by axe and Barnes' detective work takes him to Kooskia, Kamiah, and Orofino on Idaho's Clearwater River and then to the Portland metropolitan area, where he uncovers truths about an old murder, new murders, and some of his close friends. If you happen to enjoy Richard Hugo's poetry, his unmistakeable voice drives this novel and his lyrical writing and philosophical observations make this book an aesthetic delight.

An Excellent Read
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2004-08-11
How was Hugo as a murder mystery writer? Excellent, in my view. While teaching at Montana, Hugo served with excellent mystery writer James Crumley, and the latter may have provided some impetus and inspiration to Hugo. 'Death and the Good Life' is a quick-paced read, one filled with the veridical wisdom we have come to appreciate so much in Hugo's poetry. While weaving an intriguing mystery, Hugo's characters leave us with several memorable, if not haunting, lines: "As long as we can keep the working classes under surveillance, we will survive" (74); or, "... and it was like a lot of other American towns -- junky. The usual monuments of something that may, given the peculiarity of history, come to be called civilization" (128); while lines like "We sat and looked at the ocean spilling all its secrets to a world that didn't care" (134) remind us of his poems, 'Beachthieves' and 'Alki Beach.' In sum, Hugo's only novel is full of enough action and surprizes that grip the reader's attention right through to the surprizing end.

The Dene Nation has existed for thousands of years, but it was only in October 1969, that we formed the Indian Brotherhood of the Northwest Territories. This book is a celebration of this 15h anniversary. Since 1978, we have become better known by our true name, the Dene Nation. Our land and our lives are inseparable, and Rene Fumoleau's photographs have captured the timeless, unspoiled beauty of our land, as well as the love, strength, and hope.

This book is a MUST for your fly tying library!
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 1999-03-04
I originally bought this book without even looking through it. Days later, I decided to look through it. Wow! I read the whole book cover to cover and then I went to my fly tying station and began tying. This is a very well written book. The pictures are not in color, but instead are drawn in exceptional detail. I like the fact that the pictures are not in color, because it allows the tyer to be more creative. This book provides a "diary" section for each fly, so the tyer can make notes. I have fished these flies in the Northwest and elsewhere and had great success. The author covers Nymphs, Caddis Pupa and Larva, Chironomids, Dry Flies and Terrestrials and Streamers. Don't pass this up, The price is great!
