Lively, spirited journal

Review Date: 2006-01-04
Albert Jerome Dickson was a fourteen-year old youth when taking these notes of his 1864 journey westward to Montana. In later years his son Arthur compiled all his father's notes, journals and papers into this narrative. Young Albert was enthusiastic, sharp-eyed and keen in his observations.
Not only do we read of day to day travel on the trail, but also Indian uprisings and intimidations of the early 1860's; road agents, thieves and murderers and how vigilante groups confronted this behavior; life in early Montana mining communities; the reality of making ends meet while homesteading; establishment of territorial laws; character analysis of such men as Jim Bridger, J. M. Bozeman, military figures, the notorious Jack Slade and many others.
An enjoyable and historical timepiece.

Wonderful, Splendid, what more can I say. A tale of cooperation in getting fire for the people. Coyote, usually a trickster, works with other animals to get fire from the mountain. Highly Recomended for Children of all Ages.

Speight's "Craven & Northwest Yorkshire Highlands"

Review Date: 2005-10-03
The first of Harry Speight's major works (his smaller works on Airedale and the city of Bradford preceeded this) is an excellent overview of the part of Yorkshire from the Skipton region up to Settle and nigh-on Kendal beyond. He explored the entire region on foot and brings to the attention of the reader just about every aspect of the history, archaeology and folklore of the region you could possibly imagine, in a versatile and most erudite literary manner. Of particular interest in this work should be his early explorations of the many limestone caves in the region. Although not his finest work, this was the book which set the standard for all the others which followed. If you're unsure whether this book's worth buying, have no second thoughts - if you want to know the history of this region, it can't be bettered. A magnum opus no less!

Tears of laughter from a wonderful writer and his garden.

I read this book some time ago, the text was so well written, so informative and joyful. It is a garden story, so hard to come by these days, full of laughter... "plants in bondage" we've all been there with delphiniums. A treasure of a story and a window into a Canadian West Coast Garden. Thanks Des.

"Crude Dreams" is a great read. Jack Roderick is a masterful storyteller. He provides us with an intriguing history of the oil industry in Alaska along with fascinating portraits of the unforgetable personalities who lived it. Any attempt to understand the oil business in Alaska is incomplete without this book. This is history at its very best.

Can't imagine sailing in Belize without this resource! It's really the only one out there. That said, one must rely on their own navigation skills along with the advice in this book--things change every year... Great book!

Guides the sailor through the Northwest Carribean
Helpful Votes: 16 out of 16 total.
Review Date: 1999-04-09
Used this book extensively when we cruised the Caribbean and never had a reason to criticize any information. Entry and exit instructions were explict and correct. We did exactly as he recommended and had no problems. Direction for sailding from Cuba to Mexico were right on and tips about sailing down the Mexican coast were helpful. Belize info was great as was the info about Guatemala!
