The book is very informative and accurate. In my copy there is a publishing error that causes some confusion in page numbering.

The original is from the distant past from a conservation perspective (1940) and this Dover edition is hard to find these days. But if you care about birds and the words used to describe them, where they live, and how Oregon's refuge system and wetlands came to be what they are, find this and read it. There's nothing else like it as far as I can tell. Gabrielson and Jewett were not that far removed from the settlement era and the text is one big echo of that time and of the rich birdlife the first white explorers were witness to.
Malheur NWR is at the edge of Oregon's Great Basin country in the SE part of the State. Here are two sentences from the book used to describe the place:
"The Malheur Migratory Bird Refuge wakens the imagination and kindles the vision of a naturalist. Before its possibilities all other Federal bird refuges in Oregon pale to insignificance."
The dustbowl had devastated SE Oregon in the 30's as it had the Midwest but to much less fanfare. They describe the eventual purchase of the Refuge lands by the government and how it came about. From our vantage point many years removed, we can see how that set Malheur on the road to a spectacular recovery as anyone who's visited this fabulous place will testify to.
Just a few paces from current-day refuge headquarters, which is located on a low rise above the marshlands that spread as far as the eye can can see to the north, is a plaque embedded in a giant boulder. On it is inscribed a dedication to William F. Finley, who spent his adult life fighting to create the Oregon portion of the National Refuge system, and to Stanley Jewett. I always make sure to stop by when we make our way to Malheur.

I am just a beginner birdwatcher and this book was so easy for me to locate the different birds I saw. Very informative-Good drawings and a great price. I just love this book. Being from the Pacific Northwest I didn't want to look through the books that displayed all North American birds. It would take me forever to find the bird I saw and I would forget most of the time what the features were. With this book-refined down to the pacific northwest birds- it is so easy and QUICK to identify the birds in my backyard and on the coast. Pick one up today....you won't be disappointed.

Dr. McDonald has written a novel based on historical facts as he takes us through the Bitterroot Mountains of Idaho. The Chinese laborers become real as they look for gold in the 1860s. The greed for gold touches the lives of every man.
Then in the 1960s McDonald brings us forward one hundred years. It is a mystery but also a well-developed look at forestry and the real grit of these men who preserve our national treasure of trees.

Bloody Rain is one of the most emotionally draining books that I've ever had the pleasure of reading. Jim sweeps you from page to page in an interesting mixture of history and fiction. Jim captures the spirit of the time this book is set in and the feeling of many Veterans in an awe inspiring way. What a pity he's not written anything else.

This novel is a quick and fascinating read. Once I started reading it, I couldn't put it down; I HAD to finish reading it in a single sitting.
Anyone who is the least familiar with Connecticut will find themselves caught up in the story such that they'll believe they're actually there. You'll be one of the characters and on the seat of your pants at the turn of every page.
