Retired publisher of the Ketchikan Daily News. Lew M. Williams, Jr. writes: Acts of heroism have occurred in almost every major city and spanned outlying areas from St. Lawrence Island to Delta Junction, from North Pole to Prince of Wales. Author Ferrell contacted more than 113 people and consulted many files to recount the heroism that has led to 30 medal awards since the first bestowed in 1965. Ferrell is a polished professional writer, as this book, her 12th indicates. (Review published in the Juneau Empire, the Anchorage News, and the Ketchikan Daily News.)

Great pocket guide for tourists visiting Alaska
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 1996-05-22
Interesting and well-written book on 35 of the most popularland and marine mammals in Alaska. Quick and amusing stories on each animals. All the boring facts (color, size, etc.) are set off in a fact box for quick reference. Nice color pictures although they are a bit small. Cover has a lynx on it - not what you'd think of for Alaska- but a great cover shot...

Alaska's National Wildlife Refuges is an eye-catching collage of fascinating facts, gorgeous color photographs of nature and animals, the history and current challenges confronting Alaska's wildlife refuges, and much, much more. An absorbing, well-researched, and deftly presented read, Alaska's National Wildlife Refuges is highly recommended for Alaskan Wildlife and Wildlife Conservation reading lists and reference collections.

Weightier books have been written on the subject, but Pat Kramer's ALASKA'S TOTEM POLES offer a difference: a format a little under a hundred pages, packed with color, affordable, and accompanying color photo with stories about the totems and tips on where to view them. As such, it's an excellent introduction which offers colorful, accessible information - perfect for the general-interest library.

My husband and I saw the book in a Safeway store in Homer, AK in September but didn't buy it then as it was expensive and we were running out of room to bring things home. I ordered it for my husband, then gave it to our adult son for his birthday and he liked it as well as we did. So I've ordered another one for my husband.

Excellent reading for anyone interested in Native Americans.
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 1999-08-09
I have read this book many times and found it to be an outstanding collection of short stories about Native Alaskans' traditions, folklore and religion. The book contains many short stories that are centuries old. The author has done an excellent job of gathering these stories into a volume that incorporates beautiful drawings by Alaskan native George Aden Ahgupuk. I would recommend that anyone interested in Native Alaskan folklore obtain this book. The book continues to provide me with many hours of satisfaction. An excellent book 'written' by authors who will never be heard from again.

First hand account of early Alaska

I bought this in the hopes of having a good first hand account of Tyonek, but I see that there is a lot of potential for more accounts of other areas visited. This is a long term investment in understanding this period of Alaskan history, much as the accounts of the Kilbucks and other Moravian missionaries, Hannah Breece and other schoolteachers, whalers like Charles Brower, and others whose adventures brief and long document the American period colonization of Alaska.

A great book to read about the lives of American Indians. Two other books to recommend: Bury My Heart On Wounded Knee, & The Education of Little Tree.
