The is truly a fabulous book. When her mother Nedercook broke her hip at the remarkable age of 109, Edna Wilder took the opportunity to record stories and memories from her childhood. Years later, Wilder developed her notes into book format after attending a simple magazine article writing course at the University of Alaska.
The book documents what life was like when Nedercook was about ten years old and living the traditional Eskimo lifestyle that her people lived prior to direct contact with Europeans. Her people, who lived at Stoney Point near Nome, Alaska, led a difficult life, and survival depended on the availability of a number of species of animals, not to mention the weather, which at times would disrupt the general cycle of animal availability. Such a strong dependence on these two factors is a major element of Nedercook's recollections, but has harsh as life was, it was by no means miserable. There were many things for the young Nedercook to do, and when she was not assisting her mother with chores or accompanying her father when he went out to fish, she play or more importantly--as it was her duty to perpetuate the history and legends of her people--listening to her father or mother tell stories--stories which would have been long forgotten had it not been for this book.
Words cannot describe how much I enjoyed this book and how it has increased my understanding of First Nations culture. I urge everyone to read it.

I've always harbored a subconscious guilt whenever I thought about wolves in North America...I knew we'd trumped-up the danger they presented to us, in order to rid the wilderness of their threat to our fat, stupid livestock. Meanwhile we systematically slaughtered their age-old prey, leaving them to starve or become criminals. The clear, poignant and often beautiful writings collected in this book helped me understand consciously what that universal guilt is...and what I feel I must do to redeem my part in it. I must support programs to preserve what Wilderness is left, and return to it the species we have so ruthlessly extirpated. (Wait 'till you read what we did! And for how long! Yipes!) And while teaching me all this, John A. Murray reminded me how wonderful a writer, say, Aldo Leopold is...or introduced me to Edward Hoagland (WOW...thought he was a painter or something. He sure can write!) or Farley Mowat (Knew he wrote. Never knew how well!) Well worth reading!
A great collection of contemporary writings on wolves.

Well-written and intelligent, with a good sense of humor to boot. Marr throws scores of ideas at the reader, and shows that, as a travel destination, The Ozarks can hold their own against some of the USA's best.
I've also purchased Missouri and Arkansas Off the Beaten Path guides, but they simply aren't quite as complete and don't convey the same sense of fun or authority as Marr's guide.

The best-darned guidebook to the fabled area, The Ozarks, provides dozens of reasons to take a pass on Miami, Las Vegas, and Hollywood, and visit some of the most authentic places in the nation. Ron Marr has written a wonderfully entertaining guide that's filled with tons of advice on what to see, what to do, where to stay, where to eat, the best places to shop and the special events of the area. Branson, Missouri, has made the Ozarks the destination of choice for countless people, but Marr tells you all about the other great places that can be found across Missouri and Arkansas, and as he does you will find yourself laughing out loud and planning your next trip there.

We live near Tacoma and have a motorhome that doesn't fit in many of the state and federal campgrounds in the Northwest. This newest Church book is very good at helping to find the right places for our rig. In a month, using their advice, we found three wonderful RV campgrounds that we didn't know about. One is next to a first class trout river and another is at an entrance to Mt. Rainier National Park. Maybe the best part is that this book is helping us re-discover where we can go without using a lot of fuel! This is a great book for those that have never been to the Northwest as well as those that live there. Buy it! You'll like it!

I have traveled extensively throughout the Pacific Northwest and much of the U.S. This year travel will be limited to the Pacific Northwest. As a "native" Washingtonian and lifelong camper I've been looking for a new guidebook that combines travel info with the latest on campgrounds. There are new parks and new travel ideas - enough to generate enthusiasm and travel plans! Each listing has large icon keys that make it easy to find suitable camping spots, ie 50 amps, big rigs, activities and more. The book covers Washington, Oregon and British Columbia with everything from weekend to multi-week trip planning possibilities. Thank you to the authors for a great guidebook.

This is my all time favorite cookbook. Fresh, flavorful NW cuisine at its best. I love how the book is layed out by seasons. This book is timeless and is a "must have" for everyone that enjoys cooking.

This is a wonderful book! I go to it every time I have questions about terms, herbs, how to prepare specific items, the proper season to look for certain foods... etc. Not to mention the recipes, wow. You will impress family, friends and guests with the beautiful presentation and tastes and yet the recipes are easy to follow and explain things a novice cook (such as myself) would need to know. I am still learning from this cookbook and enjoying preparing and presenting these dishes. If this were the 1960's you would buy a Julia Child cookbook. Now, it should be this one. After years of cooking and many cook books this is still my go-to for information and a meal that is truly artful. And even if you are not lucky enough to live in the Pacific Northwest Susan Bradley coaches you through substituting fresh local food from your area. In a time of high gas prices and questionable products from far away places, cooking with local seasonal foods not only makes good sense but makes you a better chef. After several "dud" cookbooks lately I was hoping to find another one by this author... maybe one's in the works? Anyway, this is a must to own.

I have used this guide since published and it is an accurate overview of the many paddling opportunities in the Inland Northwest - Eastern Washington, North Idaho, Western Montana and even Canada. I had already tried many of the lakes and rivers but more were identified including some that I had never even considered in my 25 years in Spokane. Most of the paddles are appropriate for families. Put-ins and take-outs are well described. Great value that will save you time and money - even for the experienced paddler.

Our four year-old daughter loves this book, and so do we. The instructions are simple and easy to follow, the few supplies it calls for are really the ones you'll need, and if the masks don't look exactly like the illustrations, they look great anyway! My husband and I have had _way_ too much fun making these with our daughter.
There are *many* different animals represented, enough to keep us busy for a few years. This book is great for younger kids who love animals, as the pictures are fun to look at, even without making the masks. The book will be great, too, as they grow older and begin reading about Native American myths and legends. There are stories and descriptions attached to each animal mask. However, they are easy to pass over if the child is too young to read or if they are too "boring" for an active toddler or preschooler. I can't recommend this book enough.

My 5-year old son checked this book out from our local library. My initial thought was ... oh great another craft that will take up MY time and I'll have to invest money in tons of stuff just to make one. I was wrong. The masks were simple to make, took just a few minutes and I already had everything needed to make one. My son could do the majority of the cutting AND the measuring!!! Best of all, they turned out soooooo cool that even my 9-year old made some of the masks for a cub scout project.
