Every time I happen upon a magazine article written by Lyons I read it, no matter the subject. He is one of my favorite freelancer/contributers around. Always a keen, insightful and oftentimes happily cynical view on things. A writer I can trust, or buy a used car from. His writing in this book is just as good, and the subject - a single father, his daughter, the land the nurtures them both - is very relevant to me - also a father with young children to whom I hope to pass on a love of the land. Great job, Stephen!

So much drivel has been written about the Whitmans and Narcissa in Particular. I was inspired and refreshed to read her own words. Her faith and steadfastness was amazing.

The Woman Who Blazed the Oregon Trail
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2004-02-01
This book gives the first-person account of Narcissa Whitman's journey from Massachusettes to the Oregon territory to help settle it for the U.S. Narcissa is a talented and colorful writer and her story is full of adventure, courage and heartbreak. Her husband, Marcus, often gets credit for blazing the Oregon Trail, but Narcissa was a critical part of the ideological project of persuading Americans to move West. The Whitman's ambivalent relationship to the Indians in the region (whom they supposedly went to serve as Presbyterian missionaries) is one of the most rivetting and tragic aspects of the story. A great read for anyone interseted in adventure, history, women's studies, American Indian history, memoir, or just an all-around, well-written story.

The original yet practical recipes and wonderfully weird illustrations make this cookbook unique. Even those of us in the lower 48 are looking at fish in a whole new way. Randy Bayliss brings his life's experience in Alaska, his oddball humor, and his abundant culinary skills into the kitchen for us to savor.

The only problem is that you might get so interested in the reading that you forget you were planning to cook dinner. No biggie: LIFE'S A FISH is well worth the time spent chuckling.

This cookbook is not only full of wonderful recipes and facts, it is also extremely entertaining. One feels as if they have been welcomed into the colorful Alaskan community by opening this book, as well as learning the uses and history of herbs and the best way to cook fish, among other things. A wonderful addition to any collection!

One of the fondest memories of my childhood is Sunday drives with our Dad. We would pack a lunch and the whole family would pile in the 4 wheel drive Blazer, and off we would go. We often ended up in the Livengood area. We didn't know it as kids, but he was actually doing his own "window seat" prospecting.
Livengood: The Last Stampede is a long overdue, historically correct, wonderful story of the discovery of gold in Livengood. The pictures tell a story all on their own. I especially appreciate the personal accounts and diary entries of the people who lived there.
As a daughter of a gold miner and a property owner in Livengood, this book has a special meaning to me, but it is written so well that it will capture others and give them a "peek into a life that meant so much and is no more."

If you like to read about the wilderness, survival or the epic story of the Mounties early days at Herschel Island this book is for you. Imagine making the trip to Fort McPherson by dog sled or having to possibly sacrifice one of your dogs so that you and the other dogs could survive. Dick North tells it like it really was. I could not put it down.

This is an incredible tale of a Canadian Mountie patrol that disappeared in the northern wilderness under frightful freezing conditions. No one knew what really happened until the author -- many decades too late -- found the wrong turn the patrol took. You'll gain a new appreciation of the Canadian Mounties and all they stand for in North's The Lost Patrol.

Great Game, Fish, and Other Recipes

Review Date: 2005-03-28
I recently found this delightful book in a used book store. The author is a retired Alaska State Trooper, and a lifelong fisherman, hunter, and cook. This cookcook contains many wonderful recipes including Nelson Clam Chowder, Deep-Fried King Crab Legs, Grouse and Noodles, Moose Sauerbraten, Corned Bear, Fancy Pickled Eggs (made with beets), Charlie's Apple Pie, and the Alaska State Fair award-winning Mug-Up Cake. Most of the game recipes can be made with beef or other more common meats instead. I can't wait to try these, although I must admit bear is unlikely to turn up on my menu soon.

In addition his many mouth-watering recipes, Mr. Nelson shares wonderful stories about growing up in Alaska and later working as a state trooper. And in case you're wondering, a "low bush moose" is an artic hare, in contrast to a "high bush moose", which is the big brown deer with the scoop-shaped horns :-)

Lowbush Moose is a Great read, with Good recipes; lotta fun!

I fell in love with this book while vacationing in Alaska. As a speech language pathologist, I work with children who have speech and language delays. They really enjoy the catchy rhymes while learning about wildlife not found in the Northeast region of our country.

About a young man pitted against horrible Minds

Dean Warren's Man Over Mind is a hard-core, well written science fiction saga about a young man pitted against horrible Minds, former human beings who merged their dissected brains with computers and reaped the power to rule the galaxy in utter depravity. The hero's fight takes him across space and time and against the workings of his own brain before he can challenge the dread nexus of the Mind's superhuman power. Man Over Mind is an exciting, whirlwind of an adventure tale and enthusiastically recommended reading for all SciFi buffs.

An Exciting Read

Although new to Sci-fi, I have studied human brain-power and its relationship to creativity. Dean Warren offers the reader a great story plus an even greater insight into how the brain works. Warren's hero, Tol, meets with many situations, each of which helps to explain the brain's intricate functions. Tol displays the mark of a born leader as he employs his tremendously logical brain in deadly combat with its silicone counterpart.
I recommend this book. It may, or may not, foretell human life in the year 3300, even so, it tells me that I have been missing something. I'm becoming a sci-fi fan!

"Works of art give joy because they are so well made." This is a paraphrase of a quote from Bill Reid, the gifted Haida sculptor who led the way for today's carvers.

This book is incredible. Every carving, every piece of art is incredibly well made (as is the book itself). If you're interestd in either New Zealand (i.e. Maori) or Northwest Coast art (i.e. totem poles), you should buy this book. The pictures alone are worth it.

A contemporary selection of works from native peoples of New Zealand and the Northwest coast

If it's a contemporary selection of works from native peoples of New Zealand and the Northwest coast which is needed, MANAWA: PACIFIC HEARTBEAT fits the bill perfectly: it presents modern Maori and Northwest Coast art, covering the history of major exposure of modern young artists to the world and including an excellent representative sampling of their achievements in striking color photos. 31 Maori and 15 Northwest Coast artists are presented to represent over three decades of works and events around the theme. The gorgeous color photos of over sixty selected pieces created especially for MANAWA make for an exceptional presentation.

Excellent set of taxonomic keys to Pac NW invertebrates
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2000-05-16
Kozloff and Price's set of keys is an excellent tool for collectors and scientists who need to know what they are looking at, and to be sure that they have the right name with the animal in their hand/bucket.

This 8.5" x 11' format book covers marine invertebrate phyla down to the species level for animals found from southern Oregon to the Queen Charlotte Islands, British Columbia, Canada. As such, it makes a great companion set of keys to "Light's Manual: Intertidal Invertebrates of the Central California Coast" by Smith and Carlton, and "Marine Algae of California" by Abbott and Hollenberg. That set of 3 books is a treasure for people who need good taxonomic information on nearshore marine life to support what they do along the pacific coast of North America.

Back to Kozloff's book...the book has the keys themselves, as well as supporting BW photographs and great line drawings to help the reader interpret particularly sticky parts of the keys. There are also brief occasional notes about known ranges of some animals covered, but this is not a reference book to the ecology of these animals, it is an excellent set of taxonomic keys.

The book is a reprint of a 1987 publication. As such some names of taxonomic groups have changed in the intervening 13 years. Nevertheless, this book remains the best set of keys for this region that we have.
