THE runner's book for women new to the sport.
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2005-07-29
The first time I tried to go running I was 17 and didn't know what I was doing. My friend and I ran for an hour, were terribly sore the next day, and that was the end of that. When I was 30 I picked up this book, and when I finished it I knew enough to start running and stay with it for 6 years until a knee injury stopped me.

If you are an experienced runner, there are plenty of other specialty books and magazines that will be more interesting and fill in more detail, but if you have never run before, this is the book to start with, written from a woman's point of view. It will give you enough confidence and information to go out there and get started and see if this is the sport for you.

A good book

This is a good book if you like basketball alot and you like reading. I bought this book at a half price bookshop and I didn't stop reading until I was done with it. After I read it I started reading the others and they were good too. What I like about it is how Dave sticks up for Mr. Bowman after he has a heart attack. There is no language or violence in it so it would be a great book for a basketball lover.

Very practical

It is a great book for training for speed in soccer. It is short, on the point and has a set of excellent practice programs which one can use. It definitely helped me a lot to develop a personalized training system. The shortcoming is that it doesn't discuss to much the physiology of the exercises.

This is a great book for those who seek for a orthopaedic view in sport medicine. Each part of the body is studied, including physical exam, treatment of injuries and return to activity. A good book for the physician improve the musculoskeletal medicine. Although, the book have short information about training, nutrition and supplements.

As a physical therapist, I have found this book to be an excellent reference for my practice in a outpatient orthopedic rehabilitation setting in which my colleagues consist of athletic trainers and sports medicine physicians. I think that this book covers many important areas of the field of sports medicine and working with athletes of all backgrounds. As a recent graduate I have turned to this book many times for gaining extra information to support my clinical decisions regarding the rehab of the athletes which pass through our clinics. This book is a great asset to any sports medicine professional's library as it has clear, concise information regarding several topics and situations which are usually not covered within the curriculum of professional education in the field of physical therapy.

not the best, not the most detailed but useful

this may not be the most detailed book but it gets to the point and will help you especially if you don't have a background in cardio training. I used have an incorrect breathing technique for running but after reading a tip from this book it made my training a lot less painful and more effective. This is definitely a book for someone that wants to run long distances but does not know how to. Again this book will help despite the boring presentation of the book itself

A superb resource for the dedicated athlete and coach.
Helpful Votes: 7 out of 8 total.

This book contains abstracts, and presentations from international seminars on throwing, there are five sections;

1. General throwing, some very good introductory articles

2 Shot, the least well covered section

3 Discus, some very good authors

4 Hammer, one superb article by Bondarchuk, the rest are so-so.

5 Javelin, some very enjoyable articles.

A great book to think your way through the sport, the different authors all bring different ideas to the table.

The varity of different articles stopped it being a five, but buy it for Bondarchuk, Bartonietze, and Grigialkya, they are superior to any other throws authors I have read.

Buy it!

Good Book but would have liked more information

This book was great but I would have liked more information on what workouts to plan when. It gives you an overview of an off-season training plan.

I really enjoyed the section about swim drills, different weight workouts and setting goals for next season!

Informative- but some aspects out of date.
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2001-03-03
A very comprehensive manual for triathlon with contributions from well qualified and respected authors in their specialised fields. Full of practical information and examples. Generally following very sound principles, but some of this information is out of date. The training intensity guidelines and methods for determining them are out of date. The author now currently advocates a different method to determine this. Good for the overall structure of training and periodisation, but be careful, the heart-rate guidelines may be too high.
