I would have never gone to Tulane if I hadn't read this amazing piece of literature. Even if you're not thinking of going to Tulane or college at all, you should read this book for its insight into the human psyche and comedic banter.
ps: there's a secret message on page 35, if you switch the first and last words of every sentence in the 2nd paragraph down. It's hilarious!

"Harvard is the Emory of the North," said Atlanta boosters in the period following World War II. But it wasn't true, and Harvard was not the Duke of the North, either. The presidents and faculties of five elite southern schools - Duke, Emory, Tulane, Rice and Vanderbilt - knew their institutions were inferior, by orders of magnitude, to the Ivies, Stanford and the University of Chicago. Morally and pragmatically, segregation stood in the way of advancing their schools. To become a research university and to mount competitive graduate programs required outside funding, principally from large national philanthropic foundations and from the federal government. But such funding sources as the Ford, Carnegie and Rockefeller organizations began to attach a string to their largesse - abandonment of Jim Crow restrictions on race. And beginning with Truman, each succeeding federal administration increasingly pressured the private schools to end segregation voluntarily or risk losing grants and other major sources of funds.
University trustees manned the barricades, barring transformation of the institutions. Uniformly well-fed, white, and backward-facing, these worthies dedicated their tenure to the maintenance of racism in their beloved schools. Melissa Kean avoids an "inside baseball" study of the five universities. Instead, she offers a well-written, fast-paced account of the faceted conflicts between the academicians and their well-intentioned superiors. University presidents, sometimes aided by a conservative but practical trustee, became whitewater guides, steering through political rocks and hazards. Readers know the outcome of the struggles, and Kean gives us a thoughtful and absorbing account of how it happened.

Clarence Mohr and Joseph Gordon have done a splendid job in describing the recent history of Tulane University, the school I attended from 1965 until 1967 and again from 1971 until 1976, at which time I graduated. On the overall, they succeeded in making Tulane become alive, and how it developed since World War II. Of course, I could well relive my own experiences at Tulane, both as a student and a library staffer which I was from 1972 until 1979. As I read this book, I vividly remembered several events that I witnessed as I attended Tulane and also worked for that school. Names of teachers I had at Tulane appear in the book, and I remember some of these teachers very well, as I have learned a lot from them. The pictures help a lot in enhancing thse memories I have. I have many fond memories of Tulane, and to this very day enjoy going back to the campus. And reading that book made me re-live Tulane, too.

Bought this course after a trip to Istanbul, when we realized that we knew nothing about the Byzantine Empire. Like many other people, we assumed that the Roman Empire ended circa 450 AD.
What actually happened is that the capital of the Empire had moved to Constantinople about 350 AD, where it continued for the next 1,000 years until the sacking by the Muslims in 1453 AD.
Professor Harl, a popular Tulane professor, does an excellent job of describing the history of the Byzantine Empire. He is both knowledgeable and entertaining. Highly recommended, especially for those contemplating a trip to Istanbul.

On a search engine I read a request for more information from Mike Y., grandson of Miguel Ydigoras Fuentes, so here goes.
From the title alone "Misunderstood Caudillo" Caudillo meaning-strongman. it's not quite clear what the book is about as listed , the complete title continues: Miguel Ydigoras Fuentes and the failure of democracy in Guatemala. Such a title may lead one at first glance to think the book to be recriminatory in nature attributing blame for such a failure to Ydigoras (Guate. pres. 1958-1963) but such is not the case. Perhaps such a leading title was in part due to so much controversy and mixed and even contradictory information that has been written by various factions with various agendas and varying levels of accuracy and falsehoods or of insights into the true character and nature of the man.
The contents of the book present the reader with a better understanding of actual events and the turbulent realities of the time that were faced.
As a scholarly work by Dr. Ebel, it is to be commended for the extensive presentation of the political events encountered and thourough referencing of footnotes.
I highly recommend this book.
In response to the request for more information from another reader: One of my grandfathers early memoirs written in Spanish. "Primavera" (springtime) about the early years of his life, does reveal insight into his basic character that was appreciated by his family. In it there is a story of once while a young road construction worker he was caught with a copy of"white papers" in his back pocket, and the tense moments he had trying not to get in trouble by the military superior who questioned perhaps they were "red papers" (ideological differences could end up getting one in trouble) The "white papers" turned out to be a papal encyclical on labor relations, and fair practices. Even as a young man MYF was educating himself on the better ways of accomplishing the betterment of his country.
Also in response to the request for more information. What is seldom noted in other web search matches but touched upon in Ebels book was his participation in the Paris Peace conference which resulted in the treaty of versailles. He was also a founding member of the League of nations, ambassador to Britain in the '40s during and post WWII. Of further interest is the "sway" in the UN resolution vote for the Palestine Partition resolution of November 29 1947.
In a 1963 Prentice Hall book whose contents accuracy was approved by US secrt. Adolf Berle there is mention pg221,222 of the US being alerted to the presense of missle sites in cuba by MYF's intelligence but not only of the generally now discussed sites but also of secret submarine shelters. In 2003 Discovery channel did air a special entitled, "The secret subs of the cuban missile crisis" but no credit or mention was made of such as per, Berle.
As for Misunderstood Caudillo, its not a feel good inspirational biography, although there are some kind quotes. It's actually frustrating, but this is one of the strengths of the book. Let me clarify, the book is easy to read what it does so well is lets the reader take on the burden of leadership and feel the frustration. It so effectively conveyes the serious complex and ongoing challenges and pressures faced by MYF.
Ydigoras Fuentes did indeed in person inspire, comfort and labor endlessly to better his country. As to more on his diplomatic activities beyond the Bay of Pigs, the UN and elsewhere... florida is too pivotal due to the latino voter rep/to/dem ratio due to the bay of pigs...and...it's getting a bit too close to the 60th anniversary of..so, that will have to do for now.
For those fond of Guate. may I recommend visiting the Hospital Infantil Maria Teresa (MYF's wife) it's our attempt at a St. Jude's. annecdote: As a child my grandmother(born Dec. 25) would point to the sliver of a new moon and say it was God's fingernail.

In addition to being a football fan, I am a Certified Floodplain Manager and Certified Emergency Manager. There were different angles that led me to purchase this book.
I wished the book would have gone deeper into how the individual players as a whole were impacted. The team had to move numerous times and had to play a schedule of road games. I had sympathy for everyone involved. The anecdotes talking about how the coach and athletic director had major disagreements over the coach trying to do right for his players while following NCAA guidelines is recommended reading for anyone who works in sports administration.
The book would have been better if it had the stories of more players, coaches and school officials who had to still be on the football field in spite what they were suffering off the field. The player stories mentioned were poignant and were the strength of the book. Also, I wish more had written about their journey from New Orleans to Jackson to Dallas as the team evacuated.
I would recommend the book, but I just wish that the authors expanded on the subject matter.

I picked up the book and read it in about 2 hours.
I attended games as a fan on the sideline during the Katrina season, and watched the ones on TV that were too far for us to get to during that incredibly trying time for those of us trying to piece our life back together after the failure of the federal levees. I continue to bleed olive and blue and attend all the home games and as many road games as I can.
Simply watching as a spectator from the sidelines does not do justice to this team and these young men.
In reading the book, you forget whether or not you agree with the replacement of Chris Scelfo. You see the players and the coaches for the human beings that they are - their sins, their triumphs, their disappointments.
It reminds you that Tulane football is played by young men who try in their own way to do the best that they can on the field, but also in the classroom and more importantly, as in the case of Brandon Spincer, in their lives.
You will not be able to get through the chapter on Brandon Spincer's death and funeral without a box of kleenex. And Scelfo's dismissal hours after the funeral just puts the weight of the entire situation squarely into perspetive.
Thank you Coach Scelfo and Mr. Hochman for chronicaling this story - I hope every Tulane fan reads this very important chapter in the history of the program.

David Duke, former grand wizard of the Ku Klux Klan, gets upset when you mention his past when questioning his speeches and writings. In virtually everything he writes and speaks, he claims Jews and others hate and oppose him because he tells the truth (quite psychopathic). However Duke's writings and speeches are filled with hundreds of lies, half-truths, distortions, tenuous links, very selective reporting and personal opinion. This has been the art of Nazi propoganda
since the 1930s.

It is interesting that the editor has compiled the essays he has so that the reader can understand the impact of David Duke and the Politics of Race--all without one essential voice, that of David Duke himself.
I should know, I am Representative Duke.
How can college students who use this book as text, truly understand the movement that I initiated without hearing from me or at least those who supported me. After all, I did receive over 60 percent of the White vote in Louisiana, I must have had some supporters.
Until my book comes out this fall, My Awakening, My Journey to Racial Understanding, The best book on the subject (or at least the least biased} is Mickey Zatarain's book David Duke, evolution of a Klansman.
Sincerely, David Duke

Tulane University: Diverse? Just? Overrated? Greedy?
Is this a place where the young mind is cultivated, and the seeds of knowlegde sown that mixed with experience become the dangerous power that is wisdom?
What percentage of Tulane graduates are millionares? The answer is surprising.
What if anything happened when television's Red Power Ranger visited the campus?
I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in the Institution that is Tulane University- young and old, Jewish and not, American or other, dead or alive, THIS ONES A WINNER!
