This book was hilarious from front to back! Most would consider this insightful, funny, and one could quickly forget that the author is speaking about a preppy cult! I can say that because I am southern belle, and people stereotype us southern's as well. I love the fact we all live in American and from East to West each culture is different! God Bless American.

I ran into this book in 1982, when I transferred from a small college to a major university-not because I wanted to be Preppy, but because how it had absolutely consumed the majority of the student body to BE as Prep as possible-and it couldn't be avoided, no matter how hard one tried to ignore it. While the book was meant to be somewhat satirical, the impact it had was huge at that time, increasing and encouraging an already present 'us VS them' mindset that I think persists to this day. It's a good book nonetheless, and I'm surprised that a updated/revised version hasn't come out by now. But I shudder at the possible impact that would have.

For those of us raised slightly below true "prep" status--good public schools, went to country club with friends (family too poor for own membership), prep clothes from consignment stores...this book helped us to fake it well. Everything in this book still holds...if one wants to fit into "good" society. Parts are good for a laugh, though, because in our thankfully diverse modern society, it seems antiquated to suggest that one needs to be either White, Anglo-Saxon, or Protestant (i.e., a WASP)to partake of the casually elegant prep lifestyle.

What an unexpected sum-up - I had a blast comparing all the parallels - its very true to preppy life - almost eerily so. from the moment I started this book I could not put it down - I ended up reading it in two sittings (it got late - 2am - and I had to get to sleep for squash).

This book is timeless. It was written before I was even born and much of it still holds true. Some of the references are dated, but most of the material is relevant and funny. It's a nice book to have out on your coffee table for guests to browse through for some light amusement.

I actually paid a little more for "nice" copy of the book. Perhaps it will be a collector's item someday. It is a perfect snapshot of the yuppie suburban family in the 1980's. Seeing as it was written in the EARLY 80's, the material was certainly ahead of its time. J.Crew is still selling madras today, and Lacoste polos are as ubiquitous as ever. The North Face has somewhat displaced LL Bean (mentioned a lot in the book as the "sporty" attire purchased for ski trips..etc). Also SUVs weren't yet on the scene when this book was published.

This book is absolutely hysterical, especially for teachers like me! Done paints the picture of what it is really like to be in our profession; it's truthful, yet inspiring. I found myself saying, "That is so true!" aloud almost every page. It's perfect to take to the pool or beach for a quick, entertaining read!

Phillip Done portrays life as a teacher in a humorous, enjoyable manner. His writing style is engaging and easy to read. As a teacher, it's easy to relate to many of the stories he shares. I enjoyed the book so much, I bought a copy to share with my co-workers. A fun, must-read for all teachers dedicated to the task of helping children build upon their self-esteem as well as grow academically.

As a third grade teacher I just want to say that Mr. Done has put my classroom into words-thank you, it makes me feel good to know that all third grade teachers are in the same boat, and enjoying the ride....most of the time.

If you want to laugh until you cry, then read this book! Phillip Done captures all the joys of teaching and expresses it in a way that is hilarious. As I tried to share passages with my family, I couldn't get it out because I was laughing so hard. Anyone who has taught or is starting their first year of teaching should definitely read this. You will be truly inspired!

Here is a book to kick start parents to stop spoiling and teaching kids that possessions represent love, personal significance or status.
The current generation of high school kids throws a tantrum when they aren't GIVEN 9 yes, given) a new car on their 16th birthday- and pay their own gas. well, theres only a parent to blame- stop buying and send them to work- thye truly feel entitled because they were raised on unearned praise and rewards- their language of love is things and they think their idientiy comes from having the right stiff. I see this in church kids and non-church kids. Wake up nation and reads this book

Ellie Kay has done it again. In this book Ellie lays everything out on the table when it comes to teaching your child about finances. Funny thing though, I learned a thing or two myself! Every aspect is broken down from age zero to eighteen and beyond!
I immediately applied what I had learned on my children and saw a dramatic change within one week. You must get this book along with her other books, "Shop, Save and Share" and "A Womans Guide to Family Finance". Your family will thank you later!

Ellie is a gold mine of information regarding saving money and spending what we have wisely. I have 3 children and was pulling my hair out trying to teach them that the way to earning money is not by holding your hand out to daddy. I have read this book more times than I can count and have found and implemented many ideas. My 13 year old daughter is not very fond of her actually having to do something now but she can't hold her hand out forever. We have to remember that what we teach them now greatly effects their future. To have anything when you become an adult, you have to work and be on a budget. With the ideas Ellie has in her books, you can teach your children now. I don't want to see my children have a rough time when they are older because I gave them whatever they wanted when they were younger. I have noticed since my 7 year old has been working for that "I gotta have it toy", he takes care of them better and doesn't forget where he puts it.

Buying Ellie's books has been the best investment I could make to our budget. Thank's Ellie!

I was looking for a book to help guide me and my husband to teach my child about allowance and money management. I had no idea that this is a religious based book. I am a Christian, but I don't believe that God is the answer to money questions. Furthermore, there is not any straight forward, helpful information. This book is mostly just vague ideas. I would not recommend this book

Alan did a great job with this book. Not only did it help me to understand the mistakes I have made with graduate school but it also helped me to take a good look at my life. I needed help and after I read the book it was like I had a better outlook on life.The book was very easy to read. What I liked most about the book was was how the author told his story and the stories of others. It was interesting, informative, sad, and sometimes even amusing. Great Book.......Would like to see more of Alans books come out.

This is a great reference book to have on your shelf. It is honest, straightforward, and very easy to read. In fact, it took me about two hours to read. However, don't let the brevity of the book decieve you. this book is packed with advise from every thing to enhancing your application to the final defense of your thesis or disertation. Since I've been to graduate school, I can say that the author talked about every issue you will need to know about to be successful in graduate school. I would even recommend this book to students who have not finished their graduate education. It should be required reading for anyone wanting to get into graduate school.

Being a college students, Mr. Paredes book was very helpful to me. I have plans to futher my education but wasn't sure where to start. Now, I have the help of this book. I have already shown this book to my sister-n-law who is filing out college applications, she loved it too!

This books feels like an abridged version of Getting What You Came For. It's very short so you can finish it pretty quickly. This book didn't provide me with the depth that I was really looking for. Also, I found the writing to be quiet poor. The author's tone was rather encouraging. He repeated several times that you do not need to be extraordinary smart to receive a PhD. He also provided lots of precautionary personal tales. After a few chapters, though, you will start wondering how many friends the author has and why they all seem to be making such terrible mistakes that eventually result in their leaving their graduate program.

I enjoyed reading this book and finding out that I have it in me to SUCCEED in graduate school. I thought grad school was only for the cream of the crop, not average people like me. I wish I would have known what grad school was like sooner because I would have tried to get in a long time ago. The most interesting aspect of this book was how the author weaved his story and the stories of others with facts about graduate school to tell a tale that was interesting, informative, sad, and sometimes even amusing. I thought the author gave commen sense advice to what seems to me most aspects of graduate school (although since I've never attended, I don't really know). Another very interesting part of this book that I haven't seen in other books, and I've been reading a lot lately, was the section entitled "History of Graduate School" This section gives you when, where, why, and how graduate school got started in general and how it got started in the United States. I could go on with other positive statements about this book, but I guess I'll cut it short and just say that, all in all, this was a very informative book and one that deserves high marks.

This is a fast modern day account of people that are in trouble and have not foung their way. It goes to the heart of the matter of family problems as well as having a story line that is fast and hard to put down. You can see God's work in this man's life. Colton Parker thinks that he has lost everything since his wife died and the lost of his job with the FBI. He is making it but it is a struggle within himself to forgive as well as trying to make decisions to find a way to be a good father and pursue his new career on a shoestring budget.

PI Colton Parker is thrilled when his potential first client walks through his door. After an abrupt end to a stellar FBI career and the terrible loss of his wife, Colton needs a break almost as much as he needs some cash. When Angie Howe enters his office, he can only hope this will be the start he needs to his new career as a PI in Indianapolis.

Angie's boyfriend has been charged with the murder of his aunt, Emma Caine, someone Angie claims he was very close to. She is convinced of his innocence and wants to hire Colton to uncover the truth to clear his name. Colton takes the case and soon finds himself making enemies with cops and dysfunctional criminals as he uncovers shocking revelations behind the death of Emma Caine. Colton also comes face to face with his own personal struggles as he wants so desperately to be the father his daughter needs, despite the pain he feels from his wife's death. No matter what he does, it seems Colton is losing his little girl, too.

For awhile now I have heard great things about Brandt Dodson. Could he live up to the hype? Could this guy really be that good? Uh....yeah. And then some! Original Sin is Brandt Dodson's first novel, and not once is it obvious. This is smart, gritty storytelling that is seldom found in debut novels. Told from Colton's point of view, the plot unfolds perfectly, hooking readers from the opening lines and never losing steam. Dodson effectively incorporates spiritual themes throughout that are relevant and never forced. Colton's spiritual struggles are very real, adding to the complexity of his character. Fans of the PI genre will not be disappointed when they discover this excellent first installment to a great new series.

"Original Sin" is a great novel. It is written in first person, a form that really needs to be done well, and Dodson does it very well. The characters are ultra realistic and the situations seem very plausable. I thoroughly enjoyed this book.

Without giving away plot lines and turns, the story involves a man who just lost his wife. he and his daughter are dealing with it in different ways, and the pain they feel is immense. He also lost his job as an FBI agent (an interesting back story is there) and has started a private investigation business. His case is very interesting! There are many spiritual elements as well, but they are done in a genuine way and not at all "preachy." I found it refreshingly well done.

When comparing this book to the "Joe Box" series, "Original Sin" is slightly better. It is far better than the "Mike Connelly" series. These are all similar types of works, but "Original Sin" is the best of these type of detective novels which I have read. I have ordered the other books in the Colton Parker series and look forward to them.

Colton Parker is a former FBI agent turned private investigator. He and his daughter are on shaky terms after his wife died following a heated argument with him. He's been called on the case by the girlfriend of the accused murderer of a beloved high school teacher. She claims that he is innocent and wants Colton to prove it. At first it seems that all evidence points to the accused but Colton delves deeper and with just a paper clip for a clue he finds a seedy shady world of pornography and sex. Non stop action makes this gritty mystery novel hard to put down.

When I think of a PI, Magnum comes to mind. The Hawaiian shirt with the fancy car going to exotic places in Hawaii and having a fun time. So I didn't know what to expect when I started this book. Well it turned out to be an unexpected awesome read. Normally I wouldn't have picked up this book because it's not in the genre I normally read. However I am so glad that I did. There is non stop action in this book. It's very gritty and I felt like I was watching an episode of Magnum (minus the cheesiness). I really like Colton's character. He's a very good detective and is able to get what he needs out of other people but he doesn't manipulate them to get info. He also cares very much for his daughter even though their relationship is strained. Dodson takes his character into places most Christian novels would never dream of going. Strip clubs are visited. Pornography is exposed. Teachers selling students for sex sales. Web cam shows. Nothing is untouched with this book. But there is nothing graphic and even though Colton's character is not a Christian in this book, he does not want anything to do with these things. He begins to show interest in the faith but the storyline is not preachy at all. This book is really an eye opener that people are not always what they seem. It makes you think twice about people you put your trust in. I was immediately hooked after I started reading this book. It's a definite page turner that you won't want to stop reading. This is a perfect book to give to a guy who doesn't like to read. Highly recommended and I have found a new favorite author.

Brandt's debut is fluid and engaging. Loved it. I will try to read the next one slower so I don't run through his books too fast.

What a brilliant idea! How many nights have you sat around with friends, old or new, and shared horrible stories of the embarrassing and/or bizarre things you'd done in college? This book will have you reading the stories over and over in disbelief... the best of the best.

The lessons learned, the nights you don't want to remember or desperately need to forget...the good, the bad, the ugly.

A great, funny read that shares moments everyone can appreciate, because chances are, in one form or another, you've probably been there. Really entertaining.

It's awesome. I miss college yet some of these stories don't see so far away from me now. ouch!

Life does not get better than that.

I got this book for a friend of mine who just went away to college. I figured I'd read it first (very bad habit) and I was hooked immediately. One of my very favorite parts was the letter and response from the addressee, where the anal retentive dorm mate send out his list of rules, and the laid back one basically tells him to eff off. That cracked me up, and sooo reminded me of my time in a dorm!

This is one of the only books I have seen relating solely to the changing of a college campus for Christ. Steve does an excellent job describing his experiences working with and reaching college students, all the while giving practical examples of how any college student can find a strategic group to strive towards reaching for the Lord. I recommend this book to anyone who wants a "how to manual" to reaching the lost on his college campus.

Incredible book! If you have any interest in ministry on a college campus this book is an absolute must have. I have read it several times and each time it motivates me and teaches me.

If you are looking to get stirred up for, and getting some great practicals for implimenting a effective college ministry on your campus or in your town read this book. You will go through past leaders of mission movements, what their lives looked like, and what was the defining elements that set them apart in ministry.

This book is as hard to put down as it is life changing. Shadrach does a great job weaving practical ministry advice into interesting real life stories. This is a must read for every college minister, every college aged Christian, and anyone serious about building God's kingdom on the college campus. Thanks Steve Shadrach!!!

This journal provides a lot of information for students to work through in order for them to evaluate their view of life and their walk with Jesus Christ.

Student ministry is so strategic, young people need a clear path to right and wrong, more importantly the ability to make good decisions on there own, After 25 years of youth ministry I was pleasantly surprised to find a book that puts the essentials students need to understand before leaving home and the keys to good decision making all in one book, each check point gives students a deeper understanding of not just what, but why, we are to follow God's direction, Andy is gifted at getting to the main things the plan things, he and his team have given student workers one of the most valuable tool they will ever have.

I read this book for a youth ministry class in college and it is probably the best youth ministry book I have ever read! They cover a lot of ground and make it applicable to real life. I would highly recommend this book to anyone!

Great resource for anyone who minister to youth. I bought this book for our youth ministry team. It has helped them to focus on the important issues that youth face today.

I can't wait to start using the checkpoints as laid out in this book, or use it to create our own version.

Andy Stanley and Stuart Hall have done amazing "legwork" for Youth Leaders everywhere in defining essentials that are usable now. To find out there's curriculum to go along with this book was a lifesaver.

I have always enjoyed the adult series of Left Behind books. The kids books are just as good. The kids interact with the characters from the adult series, experience the same events, etc. However, since the main characters are teens, these books can appeal to younger readers. So far, the stories haven't had the ups and downs that the adult series has had. The adult series has books that are a lot more boring than others. The kids series seems to be good in every book. These are not for really young kids, but would be appropriate for young teens. I enjoy them and I am an adult.

My 12-year-old son just devours these books, and I'm so happy about it! There are too many negative influences in today's society, and these books are nothing but a positive influence, in my opinion. My son says that these books are bringing him closer to God. How many people can say that what entertains their child does that? My son actually puts the Game Cube down to read these books..and believe me, that's a miracle!

Yes, these books are from a Christian perspective, but even a non-Christian would enjoy the good reading.

Mark Moore has it wrong. This book may be Christian, but it is not propaganda. It tells about something that I (and many other people) believe will happen.
Mark says that it is "ludicrous" to believe that the world would go into chaos if all the Christians disappeared. Yeah right! Let's see millions around the world disappear at the same time and withount warning and not have chaos.
I think Mark's accusations are what's ludicrous. "An evil religion perpetuated by zealous idiots"?!? Give me a break! Christians are as normal as anyone else.
In the Bible, the book of Revelation takes about "20 pages" because it only gives enough information to understand what is going on. These books are much longer because they put the situation into real life situations.

As for the quality of the book? A different reviewer mentioned this and I feel the same way. The time line is screwed up compared to the adult series. From what I remember, there WAS no Global Community before the treaty signing.
All of the kids series books that I have read are good, but not as good of quality as the adult books. I personally think that the authors lost some of their good writing style by continuing the adult series so long, and it is showing up in the kids series.

The Underground is yet another perfect continuation of the Left Behind Kids series. Logging in as book #6, The Underground finds our four teen post-Rapture heroes unleashing the power of the printed page by way of an underground newspaper that proclaims the message of God's Word to their peers at a high school named after the Antichrist, Nicolae High, which was established in book #5. The kids encounter trouble at every turn, and as schol authorities and social officers relentlessly hunt them down, they struggle to reveal the Truth of God's message and the Truth behind the global disappearances of millions worldwide in which event each one of the four kids were left orphans. They boldly face one close call after another until one of them is captured by the agents of the Antichrist's newly formed regime . . .

The Underground ends with a cliffhanger, making the reader want to read the next book to see what happens and how or if the characters survive. The story is continued in book #7, in which installment the reader discovers how the character who is caught in #6 fares.

What can I say? Max Lucado is a gifted writer who takes spiritual concepts and puts them into understandable and easy-to-grasp stories illustrations.

Max Lucado is a premier story teller. The message that Christ knows how we humans feel and that he is close enough to call on whenever we need him is uplifting and comforting.

i haven't read max lucado books in awhile and I have read quite some of them. I have to say that this is one of his best written. The chapters are short but they are meaningful, each one of them that applies to different people.

This a great book. I love the way Max writes. It's very unique and refreshing. He really brings the stories to life.

This is my first Max Lucado book and I loved it! It took me a while to read it because I don't read that often but something made me keep coming back to try and finish it. He made everything so simple and easy to understand. The real life examples were great! I would recommend it to anyone!
