The Hungry Clothes and Other Jewish Folktales

Review Date: 2008-09-23
To kick off its new Folktales Around the World series, Sterling turned to Peninnah Schram, the Director of the Jewish Storytelling Center and winner of the Circle of Excellence Award from the National Storytelling Network to choose stories that represent the "values, faith, culture, and traditions" of the Jewish people. The twenty-two tales, expertly selected, draw from a wide range of traditional Sephardic and Ashkenazi lore. They include favorite fairytales, legends and trickster tales with familiar characters, such as Honi and Hershele of Ostropol, plus some re-imaginings with Moroccan settings and new protagonists. A wise woman replaces the boy Solomon and King David in proving guilt by discovering gold coins left behind in a pot of honey. A Hakham replaces King Solomon as judge in "How Much Is a Smell Worth?" In three lovely tales not often found elsewhere in English, the scratch in a diamond is transformed into a rose, a prince unknowingly carries news from a free bird that teaches a caged bird how to escape, and a young man wins the contest for laziest man in the kingdom. Short introductions turn many of the tales into parables. With messages laced through each story, this is more consciously a teaching collection than Schram's other works. Thirty-two elegant, full-color illustrations reinforce its formality. For adults to share with children, or ages 10 and up to read alone. With introduction, glossary, and sources. Great for students/aficionados of sociology and rhetoric
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 1999-02-26
This book provides much insight for students and aficionados of sociology and rhetorical essays. It is a penetrating entrance into the process of reading and writing; it is a foray into diversity and humanness. In this compilation of essays, Warner, Hilliard and Piro have brilliantly combined, organized and analyzed a diverse selection, which raises the bar to a new standard by which future books will be measured.

The essay authors are appropriate for the study of rhetoric (Bradbury, E.B. White, Dorothy Parker, Gore Vidal, Walker, Tan, et al), and the topics (language, culture, family, communication, lifestyle, immigrants, ritual, prejudices) are well suited to the study of cross-cultural issues and themes.

The organization is multi-dimensional, allowing for a variety of approaches to learning with this book. The "rhetorical table-of-contents" contains the standard groupings, such as narration, description, cause and effect, persuasion, etc., but also includes new categories such as communication and process analysis. The secondary view, however, is what grabbed my attention. There is a "thematic table-of-contents" section which groups the essays in another manner more suited to a sociological view (stereotypes, racism, sexism, places, etc.)

The accompanying activities and exercises are thought provoking, inspirational and rewarding, whether for classroom use, or individual or group assignments.

Overall, a fine book for students of rhetoric, culture and beyond. I highly recommend it.

Used as a textbook for MS program. Presented a good overview of logistics and how one part of teh supply chain effects the others.

Logistic's field total view

It is a very good book for anyone who needs to understand what is the field of logistic management. It is very useful for academic and practice job. Also, the book presents latest topics as supply chain management, materials management, information technology, focus on marketing and a systems view. The cases are short but very interesting: Maybe the cases can be improved with more data base. Lambert's book gives and equilibrium between conceptual and simplicity view, giving a very didactic product. If you need other books for a second level of complexity I can recommend Shapiro (Modeling the SC), Chopra S. y Meindl, P.(Supply Chain Management) among others.

Amazing introduction and professional treatment of the Supply Chain for Senior Executives
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2007-09-24
As an executive, I was always weary of dealing with Logistics and was at the mercy of idiots who professed to know about supply chain management. Having read this thorough textbook on logistics, which was very easy to read by the way, the lights turned on!! Its a comprehensive analysis of ALL aspects of the supply chain communicated in easy to understand yet profound simplicity. I GET logistics now. Cannot be duped by warehouse cowboys after reading this text.

Essential concept content

I have found this book extremely useful and can reccommend it with the confidence that it will help every person involved in Logistics in either: 1) Revise personal experience in the light of customer service and marketing research. 2) For beginners in the field, to develop a sound conceptual basis in Logistics & Suply Chain Management. I used as reference for my own work and I can assure that following this approach will ensure that different persons with different background & experience can understand the key issues.
I have not rated this book with 5 stars since while it infuses concept, it will not provide system design tools. Perhaps this is better, since it will allow for creativity instead of clonation, the first being what I feel is the best engineering practice everywhere. If you want to contact me about this book, you are welcome.

Good Throrough Biography of Ben Franklin

Review Date: 2008-10-16
Ben Franklin played a key role in Colonial American life. He played an important part in the American Revolution. This book documents a lot of information about him. The problem is that it is a book for youth and the author forgot to make it entertaining and not dry. I'm not sure how many young adults are going to read through until the end.

Not Too Current

This book covers the history of radio and tv well, but it really isn't too current with some of the new broadcasting standards and new research methods going on.

Covers the Subject Well

Review Date: 2004-02-10
Among the historical aspects of broadcasting covered are: development, technology, economics, programming, impact, regulation, and international aspects. The book's beginning tells us that broadcasting has consequences and that theme runs through the text. We're given clear definitions of the key terms used by media professionals and a historical context of their development.

Appropriate charts, graphs, and photos add an element of visual explanation to accompany the written descriptions. The sections on regulation and audience research emphasize the importance of those two components for students interested in entering the field. This book is a good introduction to the industry's founding and place in American culture.

Standard Intro to TV and Radio Text Book
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2000-01-10
This is a popular text for your basic college TV and Radio intro class. I have used it for several years myself and it's a fine overview of the subject. Gets pretty technical on electronic stuff and has less on broadcast history and personalities (in my view). Also, since the death of one author the book has become more dated each year and will continue to do so unless they do a fairly significant rewrite.

POORLY WRITTEN, UNSUBSTANTIAL CONTENT; ONE OF THE WORST
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2004-10-18
This woman, "Dr. Sterling," has proven that anyone can write and publish a book. The book, by its title, leads the reader to believe it will actually have some information on the stripping industry and the people who inhabit it. It is sprinkled with some of this information, but most of it is emotional testimony of her favorite customers and least favorite. Additionally, this amateur litters the book with stories of her newfound profession, that of a psychologist. If I wanted memoirs of a psychologist, I would have bought that book! In her unending defense of psychologists, she claims repeatedly that psychologists are extremely intelligent, they go through countless hours of schooling, internships, and training, and have earned the title comparable to medical doctor. But, Dr. Sterling, if this is, in fact, true, why can you not write one coherent sentence? This is the worst part of the book. It is filled with mispellings, poor grammar, fragments, poor word choices, and other inferior writing that leads one to believe it may very well be written by an 8 year old. Have you ever heard of an editor, Dr. Sterling? The constant mistakes make this book a difficult read, as the distractions of someone who cannot write are endless. Overall, it is not informative, it is beyond poorly written, and it was a complete waste of my time. I would reccomend this book to no one, except possibly an English teacher who needs material for his/her students to edit. Ridiculous waste of money and time.

Horribly Irritating!!

This book was extremely irritating to do. Starting from the very first puzzle. Most of the pictures are cut off to where the differences aren't even in the pictures shown, in the before or after photos. But when you go to the answers the photos are wider to show the entire picture. Got extremely annoying after a while. I stopped working on the book after about the 6th puzzle.
