Published in 1950, this book portrays life on various rivers in Missouri from the perspective of a steamboat pilot, to include his northwest trips up the Missouri & Mississippi rivers. This book was a very interesting & easy read. Unfortunately it is out of print and hard to locate.

As a Missouri native, I was particularly interested in reading this book & the book did not fail to please! The author discussed life in Hermann, MO, & smaller rivers personally experienced by me in a canoe (Osage, Gasconade) that most folks have never heard of (unless they happen to be familiar with Missouri). There were also numerous illustrations of steamboats on site & names of other steamboat and river Captains for those that are interested in further research.

The author was well versed & knowledgable on the subject, discussed daily events & sightings of his life on the river & noted the impact of the railroads, which eventually replaced this mode of goods transport. All these factors made the book well worth reading, from a historical and cultural perspective.

one of the best and most 'unexpected' books about the American indigenous experience.....

I am familiar with the works of the late American Indian author of twenty books (including Custer Died for Your Sins: An Indian Manifesto), theologian, historian, and activist, Vine Deloria, Jr. I was less familiar with his son, Phillip J. Deloria, a history professor and director of the Program in American Culture at the University of Michigan. The title of this piece and eye-catching mural-esque book cover (of four native people in a Model T, in full regalia, looking outward at the cow-spotted plains) immediately caught my attention.

What are these "unexpected" places that Phillip Deloria was referring to? They include early cinema, athletics, technology and music. What's more, he gives us new insight into the background of the Battle of Wounded Knee and other tragic chapters in Native history that are either glossed over in historical texts or are decidedly one-ended. Deloria has a very clear writer's voice, and freely intersperses the personal anecdotes of his family's rich history (Deloria is of Sioux heritage) with archived photographs and amazing stories that encompass more than 100 years of Native accomplishment in cinema (with reference to pioneers in the industry who worked to challenge and break the stereotypical depiction of the animalistic Noble Savage and other typical roles often brought to screen, often with White people in wigs and "exotic" make-up, playing these characters), sports (baseball, football and track, just to name a few sports), technology (many photos of native families and Geronimo, himself, cruising around in some of the most popular automobiles from the early 20th century), and music (notable native composers, opera singers and ensembles).

I can't begin to tell you how much I learned after reading this book. Deloria manages to probe at the poignant and horrific historical events that proved so damaging to Native Americans throughout the United States, as well as provide warm and amusing insight into the great (and oftentimes overlooked) accomplishments of Native scholars, athletes and artists that are so worthy of acknowledgement. Read this book today. It will truly open your eyes.

Don Worster once again intertwines his artful use of words with the photographic mastery of Terry Evans to make The Inhabited Prairie a true masterpiece in landscape narrative. The writing, reminiscent of John McPhee, shows professor Worster's love of his native Kansas landscapes. Furthermore, the photography of Evans superbly depicts the Kansas landscape and prairie mixed with the marks of the modern world. From aerial shots of Stan Herd's monumental crop canvases to the ruins of days gone by, Evans & Worster collaborated to expose the natural beauty of a uniquely beautiful state. A pleasant read that should occupy sitting room tables across Kansas and the Great Plains.

Know Your Kansas Insects

This oversized paperback gives a thorough job identifying the insects seen in the central United States. Published by the Extension Division/Kansas State University, its clear drawings are a big help in identifying your "bug." There are photos also, but they are less clear. The color plates are only so-so.
The descriptions are helpful. The index cites both the scientific and common names. If you want to tell your two-spotted lady beetle from your cocklebur weevil, then this is the book for you.

Insightful Book on Wesleyan Theology

If you are looking for a book that offers insights into Wesleyan theology but does not take much time to read, this is your book. William Greathouse, former general superintendent with the Church of the Nazarene, and the late H. Ray Dunning do a great job of presenting consise Wesleyan theology in short chapters.

The book covers nearly every aspect of evangelical systematic theologies from the doctrine of God to the doctrine of last things. The book focuses on what Wesleyan's believe and they do not spend time debating with others who might disagree with them.

If you are looking for a short book that overs a short but consise view of Wesleyan theology than I highly recommend this book.

Jennison's Jayhawkers, also known as the 7th Kansas Cavalry (not to be confused with the postwar 7th US Cavalry of Little Bighorn fame) were major players in one of the most vicious theatres of the Civil War: the Kansas-Missouri border. This book tells the story of the origins of that conflict, the importance of the issue of slavery in the region, and the detailed history of one of the most infamous formations in US military history.

There is a certain class of professorial writer who avoids being dry and ends up writing a pretty entertaining book while remaining focused in a proper academic manner, and it's a joy to encounter him or her. Starr definitely qualifies; his style is pleasant and holds one's interest. He poses excellent questions and does his best to answer them, always with the honesty to admit where he is surmising or conjecturing. I'd definitely be open to reading more of his work; it feels like a discussion with a learned historian in easy chairs over a libation.

What is really odd about it is I found myself going back and forth between sobered sadness and laughter. As someone with a proud Kansan heritage, to read that Kansans committed atrocities (and there is no doubt at all that they did), retaliatory or not, is always saddening; I suspect other Kansans reading the book might feel similarly. Yet how can one not laugh at, for example, this snippet summing up the battle of Valverde: "On February 21 the two forces clashed at Valverde, a short distance north of the fort, and the balance of inexperience and incompetence being slightly in Sibley's favor, Canby was defeated." The cast of colourful characters in Kansas military politics during the Civil War gives Starr many such opportunities to amuse us, and he makes the most of them with wry wit.

If you're interested in why Kansas and Missouri have a rivalry but that it mostly manifests in good-natured kidding, this book will tell you why: we both know from history what it is like when the rivalry is not good-natured, and we aren't going there again--best to keep it to the sports arena. Strongly recommended for anyone interested in Civil War history, Kansas history or Missouri history.

This text presents the rarely complete cycles of poetry known as the Roman Elegies and the Venetian Epigrams in translation. It outlines the structures and the influences, and is not to be missed by any admirer of Goethe.
