Fantastic Resource, especially for crafting and developing your essays

I have been referring to this book for over a month now and it has been a fantastic resource for building and preparing for my essays. It breaks down each of the 10 different types of essays and shows you how to address them, as well as how to build up a personal profile so that you know what to talk about in your essays. Don't forget to check out Avi Gordon's website either, as he provides some application consulting services, if you are willing to pay for more personalized service at a much more reasonable rate than other consulting services.

I would like to thank the author for the wonderful book " MBA Admissions
Strategy " I'm accepted by University of Chicago the last round and
invited by Said Business School of Oxford for an interview. I only
applied 3 schools and all the 3rd round.

I learned the most from the book and formed a strategy and plan. The
book is insightful and well written.

A step-by-step guide to creating a successful MBA application

Review Date: 2008-02-04
Business coach and Director of the MBA Admissions Studio (www.mbastudio.net) A.V. Gordon presents MBA Admissions Strategy: From Profile Building To Essay Writing, a step-by-step guide to creating a successful MBA application with particular emphasis on essay writing. Chapters cover how to present one's personal profile in an optimum light, what MBA admissions personnel are looking for in applicants, principles of better writing and much more. "Expect your readers to constantly be asking the pointed question, 'So what?' If you give them a fact, a story, an observation or any other piece of information, they will want to know: Why is this relevant? Why am I reading this about you? What understanding about you do I get form it? What am I learning about your growth, transition, development, experience or insight? Why does this advance your candidacy? It is your job to answer these 'so what's' by showing how each piece of your essay connects to you and your argument for an admissions ticket, and framing this, at least in part, in human resources and organizational behaviour terms." Highly recommended.

Avi's book distills the admissions process in a clear and concise fashion. The book got me on track to think about whom I was and what I had to offer. Avi does a great job of helping you connect the dots among your dreams, achievements, and personality.

Book has given me a good framework to piece the puzzle together from the personal front to the school that will fit my needs. It has empowered me to make it happen.

Best book on the subject

MUST HAVE BOOK. By far the best book on the subject.

Even if you have already purchased Richard Montauk book or any other MBA consulting book, I still advise that you buy and read this book.

If you have not purchased any book yet, I strongly recommend you to start with this book.

If you are targeting top 15 MBA programs, reading this book will be the best thing you could do to improve your chances.

Pros -
1) Very structured approach. It begins with helping you profile yourself.
2) No nonsense material. Very brief, succinct and to the point.
3) It leaves the obvious clutter out. Author does not repeat himself. I think this is the biggest plus of this book. There are many top sellers (no names), which are too thick at the expense of being repetitive.
3) Comprehensive.
4) Refined. Polished.

Cons -
1) Addition of some sample essays would be a very useful.
2) Schools specific research and advise will be useful too. I notice that most of the MBA admissions book in the market lack this type of material.
3) Part time program specific advise.

The exercises in this book are nothing like I have ever seen, and I have seen a lot: Barrons, Kaplan OG, Princeton Review. I have them all and this book has some serious mathematics. If you can do the exercises in here, you will breeze through the exam.

Warning: Not for the numerically challenged.

Well structured book with good sample of problems and solutions
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2008-10-02
This book is well structured.
You must work out through each chapter and if you don't understand something you should just look how problem(s) is(are) solved. The explanation are very explicit, step by step, sometimes with alternative ways.
In each chapter problems are provided in a row. These problems are in blocks for several examples related to the type of problem (ex. chapter Algebra: algebraic expressions, factoring, linear equations, unsolvable equations and whole bunch of other questions chosen according to the type of section of Algebra). It's good because if you don't know how to solve a definite type of problem, you must see how first problem is done, then you must solve the next one and you know how to do it.
Other prepbooks don't always follow after this type of book structure. They provide you with a set of different questions related to the chapter title (let's take Algebra again), but they can give all types of problems in a row. As result if you don't understand how to solve definite type of problems related to one rule (type) then you should search for the same type of problem on different pages and compare explanations. Sometimes it's not very comfortable and time taking process.
There isn't any theory there - all theory is in examples and answers. But word Advanced on book's title means that you already must know it. Actually you don't need it because you can understand the way of thinking and formulas usage just repeating provided by author solutions step by step.

EZ -Solutions GMAT Math Series Books

The overall content in the EZ-solutions set of nine GMAT books is very good. When I started studying for the GMAT I couldn't answer so many questions. But now that I have used the EZ -solutions books I can answer a lot of them. I still need to practice on my speed but they have helped me come a long way. The EZ-solutions books break down each subject covered in the GMAT with a step-by-step system.

The EZ-solutions set of nine GMAT books were extremely helpful considering I haven't had a math class in over six years, and I couldn't remember simple things such as integer properties. Like I said I had taken a GMAT practice exam and I couldn't answer many questions, but now I am getting a lot better.

The format of the EZ-solutions set of nine GMAT books is very good as it breaks down each topic in different books.

The text of the EZ-solutions set of nine GMAT is perfectly clear and precisely to the point. After going through each of the nine EZ-solutions set of nine GMAT books more than once and taking them with me where ever I have gone, they hold up nicely.

I believe that anybody studying for the GMAT should have the EZ-solutions set of nine GMAT books in their collection. They should also get the Official guide, with the Kaplan math review as well. The math lessons in the EZ-solutions GMAT books are much better than the Official, Kaplan, and PR. They have a lot more examples, with a lot more instruction as well. The Official GMAT guide isn't a good book for instruction but just for extra problems. Kaplan and PR have a decent math review in their book but the EZ-solutions GMAT set of nine books really bring it home.

I would recommend the EZ-solutions GMAT set of nine book series to anyone studying for the GMAT. Especially those individuals that who need a math review, and just not practice problems. This set of nine books breaks down each subject covered on the GMAT, and gives detailed expiations of each one.

The EZ-solutions GMAT set of nine books are a little more pricey then those currently on the market. But if you are serious about taking the GMAT and getting a good score I believe they are worth the extra money. As I mentioned earlier some of the other books on the market don't have as good a math lessons as the EZ-solutions GMAT books. Highly recommended!

I bought the series of EZ Solutions for the GMAT and found them to be very helpful. After going through GMAT books from Kaplan, Princeton Review, and others, I needed something more in-depth to tackle all type of questions. The EZ books cover a broad spectrum of content and practice questions with detailed explanations. These are great books for those who are seeking to perfect their score or need something more than just the basic review provided in regular study guides. They are also a good review for those who have been out of school for a while and need to refresh their math skills to score higher on the GMAT . The EZ books are very detailed and comprehensive, far more than any other book that I have seen. I would highly recommend using the EZ Solutions GMAT set of books to improve your scores!

This is a great book and I would highly recommend buying the EZ GMAT Advanced WB if:
(a) you are already completely well-versed with all the math concepts, and
(b) you are already scoring about 700 level and just need more practice with difficult math problems.

If not, do not buy this book as this can greatly discourage you and throw you off tandem. You should first use the EZ GMAT Basic WB to see your weaknesses and accordingly buying the other content area books such as the EZ arithmetic, algebra, application, geometry, word problems, and logic & stats, or probably all of these (if cost is not an object). The review books contain each and every math concept that you need to know. If you have all 9 EZ GMAT books, that's all you need, nothing else.

Good luck in your GMAT prep!

This book has clear answers and good questions, but there are a helluva lot of typos and mistakes in the text (especially for a 2nd edition) which can make things confusing. In the data sufficiency section tests there are no answer choices, so that makes that entire test section almost worthless. Having said that it does give you a lot of information about how to solve the various problems, but again just disappointing that there are so many errors in the text.

I found this book to be excellent for sorting problems into groups and learning what common principles are behind related problems. The book has a cool list of ¡°tips¡± imbedded in the solutions section which helped me grasp the common principles behind problem groupings. Even as a liberal arts major and former investment banker, I found a good number of these math and verbal tips simple but not necessarily obvious and enjoyed having them spelled out for me. Examples: Tip #48: ¡°Two rectangular solids my have identical surface areas but different volumes (and vice versa)¡± and Tip #92: ¡°If A is thought to be causing B, the idea that B is causing A is called reverse causation and casts serious doubt on the notion that A is really causing B.¡± The book has a wonderful review of analytical writing and a nice short grammar review in the appendix. This book will teach you how to do problems, and I found it a great complement to the GMAT Official Guide, which has gobs of practice problems but doesn¡¯t deal with how problems work conceptually. In summary, although I was a bit skeptical at first, I thought this book was well deserving of its claim to be ¡°the #1 skill-building GMAT book.¡±

I think this book is invaluable for someone who's preparing the GMAT. It focus on topics that students need to master to get a reasonably high score in GMAT. This approach is quite differenty from other text where they simply list a series of problems for students to work on. I feel this approach is much more effective in helping students to answer the more difficult questions in GMAT.

Well worth the investment.

Excellent skills-building tool that closed the gap in my preparation for the GMAT, which other prep books weren't doing. The author does a fabulous job of providing the lowdown on the question types that recur on the test and the approaches that actually work, and presenting them in a way that's easy for time-poor test takers to digest. Indispensable in helping this test taker hit the 95th percentile. Absolutely worth the investment.

I found 'Ace the GMAT' to be, by far, the most helpful book of all of the GMAT preparation books I used. While the Kaplan GMAT book and the official GMAT guide published by ETS are both invaluable, I nevertheless found the tips and strategies provided by the 'Ace the GMAT' book to be the most comprehensive, concrete and ultimately helpful. The strategies included to tackle the math section were particularly good, especially the chapter regarding questions on probability. Overall, I do not think that anyone's GMAT prep-book arsenal is complete without this book.

This book is highly recommended. With your college chm and phy texts handy, this book will prepare for any MCAT chm passage in just a few weeks (the only topics I personally needed my texts for were thermochm. and electrochm.). The 7 concise chapters with in-ch. Q's are highly effective pedagogically and for quick review. Combined with MCAT-style, 30 min exams for each ch., you will quickly isolate your deficiencies and improve your score most efficiently.

I had an outstanding chm professor a few years ago (department chair and text author), and I'm sure he would endorse this book for its pedagogical quality. I endorse it for its quality as a review and MCAT study guide. Of all the MCAT prep materials I've used so far (Kaplan, PR, NOVA, ARCO) this is the highest quality. Recommended for all persons preparing for the MCAT.

This book contains all the info necessary to do well on the Physical Sciences section of the MCAT. Everything is presented very clearly and this book truly gives you an understanding of mcat chemistry. I recently took the April MCAT and I must say that this book and the Examkrackers physics made me feel like the PS was a JOKE! Their materials allow you to understand the mcat science conceptually such that no mcat item is EVER intimidating. Each lecture is complemented with a 30min exam where you can test the concepts as you review. (They're challenging though) Examkrackers all the way with no Imitations!!!

Honest Review of GMAT Books!

Review Date: 2008-02-24
After going through all the GMAT books, here is my honest opinion about some of the most popular GMAT books:

Official Guide:
Pros - Excellent source of GMAT questions. Very well organized with real test like questions.
Cons - No review of any math content or test-taking strategies. Not enough explanations of practice questions.
Overall, the Official Guide is a must have for all test-takers. It will give you a good idea about the type of questions to expect on the GMAT; however, if you need more than just a bank of questions, you need to look at some other source.

Kaplan:
Pros - Good for additional practice questions as a supplement
Cons - Review of math content is not thorough but just the very basics. Not enough explanation of test taking strategies. Full of guessing techniques with no real mathematical solutions. Not good enough explanations of practice questions. Unrealistic questions.

Princeton:
Pros - Good for additional practice questions as a supplement
Cons - Review of math content is not thorough but just the very basics. Not enough explanation of test taking strategies. Full of guessing techniques with no real mathematical solutions. Not good enough explanations of practice questions. Weird sense of humor.

Barrons:
Pros - Good math review. Big list of questions. Good test taking strategies. Very well organized. This is by far the best of the all-in-one kinds of books.
Cons - Although the book has a good math review, it doesn't go deep enough into each concept. Not enough explanations to practice questions. Does not have a good section for logical reasoning (permutation, combination, probability, etc) questions, which is one of the most important question-type. Does not break down the concepts/questions step by step.

EZ Solutions (set of 9 books):
Pros - Thorough math review from A to Z. Effective test taking strategies. Abundant solved examples. Numerous practice exercises. Great practice question bank in basic and advanced workbooks.
As with most books, you are expected to already have a good knowledge about the various match concepts, but with these books, you can literally start from scratch and reach the most advanced level of the GMAT.
Cons - To get the best result from these books, you have to invest in buying several books (set of 9 books), but if you compare the cost and benefits, the benefits outweigh the cost, or you can buy a few not all. Missing the verbal section. This is not a good option if you are looking for a mediocre score or just looking for a very basic brush-up. Recommended for serious test takers only.

Some of the other books has no real content; whereas, there are some other books that I haven't yet had an opportunity to review, but may be some of them are good supplementary aids.

I hope my review will help some of you in making the right decision.

They re-sorted all the OG and Study Guide questions by type and topic. Very useful if you want to tackle one major math topic at one time in a progressive manner!

"Very good for the target audience" - I think this sums it all. If you are someone who has not done active maths for some time now, and therefore does not remember the concepts involved very well, this is the book for you. This I will say holds true for most of the books of the Manhattan Quant series.
The Manhattan Quant series books cover the concepts only to the degree that gets asked in the GMAT, and do not overwhelm you.
Plus, as each of the Manhattan books then turns to the Official Guide for practice, each of the books has a section where the appropriate questions for that topic are numbered from the OG. They also detail the toughest of the lot from OG. Here I think the book is useful for anyone, irrespective of the personal comfort level with maths.
Therefore if you are true to yourself and practice the questions marked from OG as you go along, this would prove to an excellent resource for cracking the quant part of the GMAT.

A good refresher

Quantitative section on the GMAT can be a little tricky, even if you were pretty good at Math in your high school or in college. Why? Because the skills tested on the GMAT are different than the one you acquired in high school or college.

I am an engineering major and I took multiple advanced Math courses in my college and yet, I benefited from the Manhattan Review quantitative books.

Of course, like with everything else on the GMAT, you need to practice a lot so you will benefit from this book only if you have sufficient time to practice. If your GMAT is in a week's time, this book is probably not for you.

Fantastic!!!!

I highly recommend this book for anyone who has not done the type of math in the gmat for quite a while. Also, if you would like to get some tips on translating the gmat word problems better, and quicker. Time is of the essance with the gmat.
=)

I found this book to be an excellent aid for beginners, and the advanced. You need to get the official gmat book as well to get official questions. What I will tell you is after studying this book you will be able to tackle the gmat math very easily. Its all spelled out in plain english in this book.

Essential to applying to law school

I used this book 6 years ago when I was applying to law school. The hard part about applying to law schools is that only a few people actually know anything about a particular law school's quality or reputation. Rankings do not help in making any meaningful distinctions between schools and actually can actually hurt the applicant in selecting a school as he may overlook a great law school simply because of a poor ranking. Personally, I find the US News and World Report ranking meaningless because the rankings are based on the personal knowledge of a small number of people who probably don't know much more than you do about the law schools they are ranking.

Use this book properly. Check the ratio between students and professors and the average class sizes. Check the number of available courses and then make sure the courses you want will actually be avaiable to you and that the school isn't simply advertising a course that is open only to 10 students once a year. Is there an abundance of clinics with adequate space available so that you do not have to be a top 10% student in order to get some real-life lawyering experience before you graduate? Lots of schools have various clinics, but it won't matter if your chances of participating are slim to none.

Basically, make sure you are not applying to Law School X over Law School Y just because X is number 35 and Y is number 150. These rankings change every year and school can jump from one tier to another for apparantly no reason or another may stay down at the bottom just because it's small or new even though the professors are outstanding. Decide what type of professor you want - would you prefer a famous scholar or a former practicing attorney with thousands of trial cases under his belt.

Remember that the first year curriculum at EVERY LAW SCHOOL is established by the ABA and must be substantially the same, so make sure that by the time you get to your second and third years you can start focusing on what you really want to do and have the resources and professors to actually have a shot at getting your dream job. In this line of work experience is key.

Remember not to place too much value on the application/acceptance chart as the chart simply represents statistics and much more goes into your acceptance than your LSAT score and cumulative undergraduate GPA. Treat your application the way a lawyer would - convince the admissions board that even your shortcomings and unfavorable circumstances are actually the very reason they should accept you.

In parting, I have attended two law schools - one top and one low in the rankings. The law school with a tier 4 ranking made clinics available to every student and had practicing attorneys teach a multitude of fascinating courses as visiting professors. Consequently, that school produces a huge percentange of succesful trial litigators and politicians. In contrast, the top 50 law school had only 10 classroom in a run-down one-story building crammed full with students who had to scramble to get into the interesting courses but mainly took the courses that had any room left. Plus, the clinics were nearly impossible to get into. Unless you go to an Ivy League or a Stanford, law school is really what you make of it -- think hard about what you want to get out of law school, where you want to live, where the majority of jobs are in your future field of expertise and spend a lot of time researching the law schools using this book.

Good luck!

Don't try applying to Law School Without This Book

Anyone who decides where to apply to law school without using this book as their bible is missing the point entirely and losing out on the greatest likelihood of success. As the former director of admissions for two ABA law schools, and as the proprietor of www.Law-School-Admission-Expert.com and lawschoolexpert.com, I rely on this book in advising all of my law school admission consulting clients.

It is the only "official" law school book that can be 100% trusted and is completely devoid of bias. You can actually look up statistics of admitted students for most of the nation's 200 law schools. It provides a great summary of every ABA law school. Applicants often make the mistake of relying on chat rooms and on line discussions in deciding where to apply and their chances of admission at a particular school - that is the absolutely wrong approach. This book is the absolutely right approach.

If you are applying to law school, you must have this book. The grids showing the GPA in comparison to the LSAT score, and your chances of getting in are enormously helpful in the application process. There are no opinion pieces here, just the straight facts directly from the law schools.

Ez-Solutions GMAT Series

Honest Review of GMAT Books!
