What makes this review book particularly effective is the amount of practice material it has. From my experience, review is important, but it is the practice that really improves test scores. The Kaplan Book book has both. The first 25 pages or so deal with the test basics - explaining the format of the SAT Subject test and general test-taking strategies (eat a healthy breakfast, get enough sleep, don't cram, skip over questions you don't know, etc.) Then comes a diagnostic test, followed by the answers and explanations for each question.

Next comes the Literature Review part (about 60 pages) - detailing the terms one needs to know and various strategies to use while working with poetry, non-fiction, fiction, and play excerpts.

The final part consists of 8 full-length practice exams. Each exam is followed by answers to and explanations for each question. This is what I found to be most helpful in this book. Especially if you have a good amount of time before your exam, it's a good idea to take all eight exams (plus the Diagnostic) and thoroughly go over the answers. The Kaplan Book really helped me; I got a 790 on the test.

Excellent book on the topic - you won't find a better one

This topic is one that very few people realize is becoming an enormous problem in our country. We are lagging far behind the rest of the modern world, and even behind some "third world" countries in higher education. This book addresses some of the issues behind these problems. We work at a community college, and are deeply concerned about the future. We are losing talented, capable people because they cannot afford higher education - and because we refuse to spend money supporting those who need it because they come from disadvantaged backgrounds. Being smart isn't enough to get you someplace. Being rich doesn't make you smart enough - it just means you've got opportunities. Additionally, young men are increasingly being left behind and the problems and solutions involved in this are being ignored by our society. Books like this are necessary, and should be read by a wider audience before we find ourselves in a world of trouble.

These guides are pretty cool

These guides really give you a feel for what all aspects of a school are like. It's not really stuff you could find easily on your own either, like what the local area is like, where are the best places to get food and/or drinks around town, the quality of the dorms and dorm food, etc. I really would recommend picking up a few before choosing a school - especially if you can't afford to visit each place in person.

All High School & College Students Should Read This Book

While attending community college, I was required to read this text for a class called: "Student Life Skills". While a lot of the information was more of a review for me personally, I feel that the topics covered within this text are definitely appropriate for high school students and especially college freshmen. I'm an "older" student--- going to college in my 30s----and as a result I found myself realizing that a lot of the suggestions in this book were things that I was already doing in my academic career.

This book is easy to read, clear and concise. The wording is simple and uses plain, everyday English. I also recommend utilizing as many online resources that the book has to offer. Even though it is geared towards college level students, high schoolers will certainly benefit.

Take it from a UK fanatic - this book gives you the inside scoop from players, coaches, and others close to the program. He obviously loves his subject, and it comes through in his writing. His other books are really good as well - we have all of them.

Important Reading for Students of Merleau-Ponty

"La Nature" is a volume that should be most welcome by students of Merleau-Ponty. It is a translation of three courses given by Merleau-Ponty at the College de France.

The first course, given in 1956-57 is entitled "The Concept of Nature," a survey of the historical elements that constitute the present concept of nature, from Aristotle and the Stoics, through a new reading of Descartes, Kant and a novel look at Schelling. From there it's on to Bergson and Husserl. Merleau-Ponty is tracing the idea of nature in each thinker and how it corresponds to ontology, attempting a new vision of nature more in step with recent developments in science. But he squanders the gains he made when he deals with the developments in physics. This stands as the weakest part of the lectures. Though he gives a good summary of quantum mechanics, he fails to understand the ramifications of quantum physics and its effect on nature, and, ultimately, ontology, preferring instead to hide behind Bergson and the process philosophy of Whitehead. Instead of using the new physics as a starting point, he instead settles for the cul-de-sac of metaphysics.

The second course given in 1957-58, is concerned with deconstructing the Cartesian concept of Nature by examining the recent advances in biology and behavioral studies. Animal as machine is replaced by the animal as being finding itself in the world: How does the animal show itself to others (including humans) - leading to asking what is the structure, then, of its behavior and how does it signify? His lecture of Lorenz's study of instinct is the highlight of this section.

The third course, 1959-60, is entitled "Nature and Logos: The Human Body." He re-examines his findings of the previous years and the emergence of the human body at the intersection of Nature and reason: "the concern is to grasp humanity first as another manner of being a body - to see humanity emerge just like Being in the manner of a watermark, not as another substance, but as `interbeing', and not as an imposition of a for-itself on a body in-itself." This would later begin to developed in his last work, "The Visible and the Invisible," left unfinished by his sudden death. One can only wonder where he might have gone had he only lived to complete the work. These lectures give us a tantalizing peek into what well may have been.

As a Lambuth alumnus, I was very pleased to see such a fantastic collection of photos from years past. It brought back fond memories of my years there. The book is divided into sections by decade and college president. It covers Lambuth from its founding as MCFI through today. Now as a current professor at Lambuth, I hope that I can help contribute to the next edition!

This book is an ideal reference guide to anyone seeking to review research on Latino college students and also for helping to prepare a student from a Latino background to enter college and learn of advantages or disadvantages that may exist. I found this text to be comprehensive and the layout to be ideal. It additionally outlines major characteristics. The last section of the text provides thoughtful anecdotes from professionals of Latino backgrounds and their pathways towards achieving success.

Associate Professors of Elementary Education Daniel Meier and Barbara Henderson present Learning From Young Children in the Classroom: The Art and Science of Teacher Research, a thorough introduction to carrying out high-quality teacher research in early childhood settings. Chapters describe original research projects by teachers who worked with infants, toddlers, preschoolers, and primary-aged children. Learning From Young Children in the Classroom covers a host of specific strategies and "how-to" instructions for getting one's own teacher research project or collaborative group off the ground; recommendations for identifying a research question and addressing issues of data collection, analysis, and dissemination; an assortment of references and an index; and much more. "Once early educators see inquiry as key to teaching, they can find ways to sharpen that process of questioning and generating new knowledge." A first-rate get-started guide for teachers ready to learn from their young subjects even while they teach.
