Crossing Bridges
Helpful Votes: 6 out of 9 total.
Review Date: 1999-11-29
This is truly a wonderful book! It's the one so many of us have been seeking. Its appeal has a broad stroke: to in-the-home workers, off-to-the-office workers, to students, and to those in Academe. Don't misunderstand me: this is no feel-good book; it tells it like it is and somehow that's reassuring. It's reassuring because someone out there is representing us. Someone has the scholarship, the background, the style, and yes, the humanity to say it for us. It makes me proud to be an "equal gender."

". . . good philosophy was not supposed to shed light on everyday problems" says Prof. Martin. For those of us who can't live through the day without "good philosophy" reading her book provides the path to sanity. Educators are a lonely lot up there, out there, on the line of fire; just you and a whole class of whatever age, background, and ability. Take my hand, says this book. Let's go there together. I'm happy to continue the bridge-crossing begun, for me, with Prof. Martin in her seminal book,"The Schoolhome." I look forward, and across, to the other truly "essential" shore, when the next bridge beckons us to cross.

Addresses academically based service-learning
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2004-05-18
Collaboratively compiled and co-edited by Gail Gunst Heffner (Associate Director for Applied and Community-based Research at the Calvin Center for Social Research) and Claudia DeVries Beverluis (Dean of Instruction and Professor of Psychology at the Calvin Center for Social Research), Commitment And Connection: Service-Learning And Christian Higher Education addresses academically based service-learning as it has been implemented on Christian college and university campuses. Sixteen contributors focus upon the service-learning movement in Christian education as a builder of community and in developing students. Of special note is the final and illustratively insightful chapter "The Development of Academically Based Service-Learning at Calvin College: An Historical Perspective". Commitment And Connection is strongly recommended reading for all college and university level administrators and educators whether their campus is secular or parochial.

Excellent, Low-Tech Resource

Review Date: 2007-12-31
I've owned a copy of this book for 30 years and still refer to it. There's nothing the least bit fancy about it -- it's a "bulletin" of the New Jersey extension service, printed in black and white with a plastic comb binding. It covers about 100 of the trees you're most likely to find in NJ forests. Each tree gets two pages: one page with precise line drawings of the leaf, fruit, and twig, and one page with a no-nonsense description of where the tree typically grows, how to identify it, what it has been used for, etc. In terms of production values, it can't hold a candle to more recent tree books, but in terms of usefulness in making IDs and building your "tree vocabulary," it's hard to beat.

Faculty governance: An enduring storm
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2005-09-07
Tierney continues to layout a plan for the perfect faculty governance system amidst the perfect storm. But, there is no better time than right now to have an honest discussion of the competing elements in higher education. These elements include the senior administration and the faculty themselves.

Although we read about rampant apathy in the faculty ranks, Tierney is able to pull out those groups who seek reform and activism for their colleagues. He portrays an honest evaluation of differing viewpoints toward this enduring topic, while his discussion of leadership, communication, culture, and structure help to bind his thoughts and suggestions into a cohesive read - for administrators and faculty.

A BOOK FOR ALL REASONS
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2006-01-03
THE COMPLETE ACADEMIC SEARCH MANUAL is more than its cover reveals. It is a systematic guide for setting up, evaluating, advertising, interviewing, negotiating and hiring professionals both in academia and in the entire nonprofit sector. In fact, all firms and organizations could gain so much from this work.

The book lays out a complete, step-by-step approach to the search and hiring process from day one to the closing of the deal. It is thoughful, well researched, fair and thorough. The book works as a set of guidelines to make sure every step in the employment search is covered and covered well.

Every nonprofit organization can learn so much from this book. So can the for-profit sector. It is readable, comprehensive and user-friendly. The authors have obviously been through this process and have learned their lessons well. They have shared their knowledge in a pleasant, readable and digestable manner.

This book is highly recommended. It is a real bargain at the price. This should be on the reference shelf of every nonprofit organization in the nation.
