Discovering America is a fascinating account of one woman's growth in political awareness. It is a personal memoir that transcends the personal, branching out to become an incisive analysis of important events in recent American history. The most important analysis of '30s American culture
Helpful Votes: 7 out of 7 total.
Review Date: 1998-11-04
Even after more than 20 years, Stott's book remains the seminal and perhaps most provocative study of the cultural expressions of '30s America. Depression-era America created a crisis of authenticity and relevance for artists, intellectuals and those in the communications industries. The result, says Stott, was a new form of public art, focused on everyday people and based in fact. Readable and persuasive, Stott's book is as fresh and memorable today as it was when it first came out in the mid-'70s. For anyone interested in the '30s, in the Depression era, or in documentary photography, this is a must-read.

The book helps students learn about the historical, geographical, sociological, and economic aspects of the Dominican Republic in interesting and simple stories.

A definite help to young students from the DR who do not have information about their native land. An excellent tool for Spanish speakers of all ages to learn English with the background of their homeland. Teachers of ESL do not overlook this book.

Just the book I was looking for!
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2007-10-16
I had already planned and booked my trip to DR so I did not need or want one of the MANY books out there on where to stay, what to do, etc. I had already taken care of all that. Instead, I wanted to learn about the history and culture of the DR, to gain some background knowledge on my travel destination. This book gave me a great overview of the country. The chapters are broken down into the following sections: a history of the nation; from plantation to vacation: DR today; Music, food & the arts; nature and outdoor activities; Santo Domingo, Mountain/river/central areas; the north coast; the east coast (sugar and sand); the southwest; and various facts/information (that are helpful to tourists). This book makes no mention of specific resorts, rather geographic areas and what each has to offer. There are many beautiful color photos throughout the book as well. It is a very quick and easy read, and because I read it I felt like I knew a little bit about the wonderful people of DR whom I came in contact with. Do not buy this book if you are looking for a Fodor's type book that lists and rates resorts, restaurants, etc. Buy it to get a brief lesson in DRs history and culture before traveling to the country. You won't be sorry!

Well-written work on three major transportation issues.
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.

Johnston has produced a thoughtful, well-researched and documented work dealing with three issues of major significance to modern citizens: automobile fuel efficiency, global warming and air pollution. There are fascinating insights into the process of legislation and regulation in the US government. This book should be required reading for anyone with an interest in our environment, and concern about the appropriateness of the measures being taken to protect it.

Altho a difficult read this is a great teaching text
Helpful Votes: 11 out of 13 total.
Review Date: 1998-07-05
This text provides informative and up to date information regarding a broad range of drug related topic. Althought the reading level is not easy, the information is extremely useful for drug counselors. The information presented regarding psychopharmacology provides an excellent base of preparation for the certification test used in many states. I highly recommend this text as well as many of the web site exercises.

Well researched and written. Includes personal tales of life in 3 favelas of Rio. I especially like the author's interest in the mechanisms permitting collaboration between local favela dwellers, rich citizens a few blocks away, drug traffickers, police and politicians.
