From Samiin Scandanavia to Native peoples of Montana and the Amazonian rain forests, the health of indigenous peoples is being
compromised in the name of economic development. This book is a series of interviews, case studies, and stories told by indigenous
peoples themselves and offers solutions to the problems of environmental degradation facing all of us. With a Forward written
by Dr. Eberahrd Wenzil, Deputy Director of the School of Public Health, Griffith University, Brisbane, Australia, and a
Preface by Hopi educator, Dr. Gregory Cajete, this readable yet academic work provides a forum for indigenous
peoples to speak out and adds an exciting dimension to any environmental health curriculum.

This is another book by an amazing woman: she covers "both sides" and she does it well. This is a book with frightening news,
and the unfortunate thing is, the news won't get any better unless we, i.e. White Man, learn to change the way we do business
in each and every domain. Looks like Colomeda wants to tell us to change. Looks like we will have substantial difficulties
to follow her advice. But it's just that difference which makes the book a valuable read ... get it now.

Schwartz writes clearly, without intellectual pretensions and surveys over 300 films, making them come alive for us with his
words. An avid fan and popularizer of the Spanish language film--Schwartz did the same thing for Spain in his last book,
THE GREAT SPANISH FILMS (1950-1990) (Scarecrow Press)---this tome on Latin America is even more accomplished since it surveys
13 countries and over 300 films--with 70 gorgeous stills and notes on video availability. Bravo! A film book not impeded by
political theory and critical rhetoric. Que viva Carmen Miranda and Schwartz.

Schwartz covers a huge area--from Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean to all of South America--with his perusal of over
300 films, including U.S. and Chicano co-productions. He seeks to promote the films themselves of that "uncertain screen,"
Latin American cinema, "seen film by film." Using the original press books, the author presents in a terse, well-written introduction,
a brief history of L.A. film and then examines the credits, plot, gives his own critical view as well as fascinating notes
about the film, its production, actors and other multi-faceted aspects of Third World cinema. Besides a useful Chronology,
the films are organized alphabetically, with 70 interesting stills interspersed, a note on video sources and availability
(mostly VHS), a short bibliography and a bi-lingual index. The book is most useful because of its "panoramic" view and its
lack of intellectual pretention. He surveys his subject for a wide audience and provides much new information for the uniniated

This book answers a lot of questions about the Latino culture, experience, past, present and future. Some essays tell stories,
while others are plain facts. This book has about 670 pages, yet it is a fast and informative read where you can't put the
book down. It is organized by section of topic and gives suggested reading lists at the end of each chapter. A good introductory
to Latin American studies, historically, culturally, and sociologically. It gives a lot of information for the price, you
will not regret buying this book.

Excellent book, but know in advance that this book is heavily skewed toward legal topics and lawyer authors. While much of
the legal writing is dense for lay readers, it is often well worth the effort. The selections authored by Margaret Montoya,
Kevin Johnson, editor Richard Delgado, and non-attorney Gloria Anzaldua were the very best of this remarkably well-written
anthology.

It has been said that this is the most important presidential election ever, and if that is indeed the case, then this book
by Dr. Thompson is the most important book to read prior to the election. This book is extremely well written and flows nicely.
You will be astounded by the information that you learn about the Bush Presidency, information that you can use to determine
your vote.
Please read this book prior to the election...it will be money and time well spent.

"Lexington to Concord" is a marvelous book that provides a visual as well as narrative history of the events of April 19,
1775, when Paul Revere rode to Lexington and "the shot heard 'round the world" was fired. What makes this book unique is that
every page is illustrated with Amos Doolittle's sketches, period postcards, and current photographs of historical sites.
Continuing in time past the Revolution, the towns of Lexington, Bedford and Concord are illustrated, and many anecdotes and little known facts are included.
Many books provide excellent and readable narratives of the events of 1775, eg., David Hackett Fischer's "Paul Revere's Ride", but as a person who reads a great deal of American history, I highly recommend "Lexington to Concord" for its visual presentations in combination with descriptive narration and comment.

My 3.5 year-old preschooler loves books about animals, and we are constantly on the lookout for interesting picture books.
"The Littlest Llama" by Jane Buxton fit the bill as the main character is a cute little llama on the quest for a playmate.
The generally rhyming text makes for a fun reading-aloud experience. The gorgeous full-color illustrations not only bring
the llamas' world alive but perfectly capture little one's need for fun and playmates. There is even a little 'surprise' in
the plot at the end which will have readers chuckling. Highly recommended!

OK, I have to issue a full disclosure here; the author is my brother. But that said Scott has written a great little book.
We grew up in LA and had always heard stories about how the auto companies ruined public transportation in LA in order to
sell more cars. Scott decided to check that story out while he was studying for a PhD in history at UCLA. The result is this
book. So if you want to know the truth about how LA came to be the automobile centered city it is, read his book. Cheers!
How did transporation in LA die?

Why did the urban transportation system in Los Angeles die? This book takes a very multifaceted approach and looks beyond
the automobile as its cause. The title is a little misleading. The book covers the downfall of public transpiration in California
and how the car impacted life in southern California. There is actually very little urban analysis done here but it covers
the public policy of early 1900's very well. You get a sense for how the municipalities and federal government responded in
California and see the way in which the auto shaped those policies. The auto was very influential in the downfall of public
transportation and I was surprised to see how many auto related interests owned stakes in public transport companies. For
those just getting started on urban history this is a good book to start with and he sites the great source on suburbs Crabgrass
Frontier (well worth the time to read). Very well written and fun especially if you grew up around LA.
