Witty little ditty! This book has some hillarious limericks

I was coming back from lunch with friends when we saw the cover of this book posted on the author's door (we're in the same department). Back in the office, I looked it up on the internet and found some samples. I was laughing my head off - I quickly printed them out, and then literally ran to meet my friend to show him. We met halfway in the stairwell as he was coming up to tell me about them himself - one word was spoken, "Warkentin", and we started laughing again. We were reciting limericks in the stairwell for almost 10 minutes. I brought that same small sample to the pub that Friday, and they were a hit. Later on, a reading was arranged where Dr. Warkentin was able to share more of this material...the night will not be forgotten anytime soon.

A good book to read to friends and inspire ones' own creativity. Definitely recommended.

A unique and effective method to learn Latin
Helpful Votes: 9 out of 9 total.
Review Date: 2008-02-10
If you have Mac OS X or higher and want to learn Latin you are in luck. Han Orberg's amazing books to learn Latin have been digitalized along with computerized exercises, the entire text read by the author and other helpful aids in a CD-ROM that sells for $30.

The text of the two books ( you get both of his books; the whole course text) is entirely in Latin. The approach used is termed the natural method. In essence, you learn Latin by reading in Latin. Orberg has obviously put a lot of work into his teaching materials and the bottom line is that they are very effective for self-learners who want to begin to read Latin immediately. No delayed gratification here! They are also ideal for home schooling.

You might also check out Lingua Latina: a college companion by Neumann which is a helpful but not essential accompaniment to the Orberg course. The Orberg course is really self-sufficient. However, some of us need a little hand holding:)

Highly recommended.

Outstanding reference book

This book is massive and contains three sections - fiction, poetry and drama. Each section includes an excess of selections as well as longer works (like the full length plays of Hamlet and Macbeth). This makes this book an exceptional teaching aid or introduction into many facets of literature.

Even better, the sections are organized along themes in order to teach the student (or interested reader) how to appreciate the various forms. So the poetry section has sections on sound, figures of speech, rhythm, closed and open form, etc. I suppose this comes from it being a textbook for undergraduate courses - in any case, it pays off. I've learned a tremendous amount already. It's all in very easy to understand non-technical language, as well.

At the end of the book, there is even a brief section on various forms of literary criticism. The book contains numerous student essays, brief author biographies, reflections by the authors on their own works (this is really great), and it reflects a really broad range of genres and time periods (unfortunately the section on haiku is plagued by bad translations, and there aren't enough examples of Chinese and other Japanese poetry... oh well!). There is also an emphasis on getting the reader to practice (and write for him or herself) what is being taught. So if you want to be a writer, this is great.

If you're a beginner interested in getting into literature, this is really a great way to do it. Don't be put off by the massiveness of this book - it's really a resource. Just start in one small place (I started in 'poetry') and work your way around. It will definitely increase your appreciation for literature.

Good Refresher--refers to the 6th Edition

This review refers to the 6th Edition. I read this book as a refresher of the basics and found it very helpful. I especially value the simple, easy to understand definitions of the Literary Elements and the examples that accompany them.

It would be nice if we can search inside the latest edition because first thing I'd like to check is the Table of Contents and if it reflects the expansion of the literary canon. More women, people of color and writers from other cultures please.

A great period book for the old and young.

I found this book to be a wonderful period book. It really brought to life what life was like in Nauvoo in 1840, and the challenge of growing up for a young girl. The lesson it teaches are simple and powerful. You will find each page a joy to read as you grow with each character and feel how it was to have your life changing and to feel hope, love and have a place to call home.

The poems in "Lives of X" tell us who John Ciardi is, where and who he came from and offers insight into the magical world of family ties, roots, identity. I believe it is a major work as overlooked as Ciardi himself.

Best Historical Novel I've read
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-01-31
I can Say many things about this book, but the only one really important is that if you are historically interested in history of France at the 14th century you should definitely read this book. Not only this one but the whole series (7 books)
All this books are relatively short, no more than 300 pages each. They focus on specific Kings of France and all the events of the time.
Even if you are not a fan of history, if you like Novels, this saga contains more intrigue, deception, adventures, well shaped characters (as they were real, all of them) than any good modern fiction novel.

Review Date: 2004-06-12
LOVE AND BETRAYAL IN TEXAS is a suspenseful novel sweetened with passion, loving relationships, bonding with children and close relatives. This is also the story of Laura's life that includes betrayal, bitterness, mother-child battles, various reconciliations, soul-searching evaluations and even death.

Connie Nanasy's book is a complex yet heart-warming story of young Laura carrying her first baby with handsome fiancé Jim. Where the plot goes from there is the unique story of one woman's tumultuous life with so many colorful characters and chaotic situations. Her impending marriage to the first love of her life-and all the in-betweens along the way-will have you glued to this book until the final chapter. This is Laura's life from disasters instigated by her parents-which include Laura being thrown in jail by her father-to romances very hot-to-handle, and heartbreaks of her kidnapped children.

Pick up a copy of this superb novel now! You're in for the ride of your life!
