A Great tool

I am currently using this book for a 5th-6th grade Kids Club at our church. It is such a great tool for kids who have study the bible for years as well as those who walked in for the first time this year. I am very pleased with how this study is going and am looking forward to using more Discover 4 yourself books in the future.

Homeschoolers, take a look at this book!

I'm using this book for my son's third grade Bible program. It's fast moving and fun, yet very extensive with weekly memory verses and step by step bible reading and questions about the child's own walk with the Lord. It puts the child in the role of a movie director researching Jesus' life for a movie. There are lots of study questions, as well as games and puzzles to make it really interesting. Third grade is the very youngest I would have a child doing this study, in fact we are taking 2 weeks to do each weekly unit, and it would be just as interesting for an older child up through jr. high.

So far so good!

I have looked at these Kay Arthur Kid studies for years because I have been leading Precept Inductive studies since 2000. My kids are just the right age for them. I have two boys in 4th and 6th grade, and they are loving this study. They make storyboards and search for key words and answer 5 W and an H questions, and they are really enjoying it. We do it every other day during our Bible time in homeschool.

As a special bonus, since we are making a "movie" of the book of John, we watch The Gospel of John on DVD. It is a word-for-word script of the book of John. It is great for them to see an actual movie interpretation fo the chapter they just studied inductively.

It is a hit so far!

Tsiolkovsky was a bold innovator and inventor
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2001-04-03
Konstantin Tsiolkovsky died on September 19, 1935 at the age of 78. His works and his ideas have become the scientific basis of the modern theory of jet propulsion. He foresaw the significance of jet propulsion and the conquest of the stratosphere, of flights at supersonic speeds.

A museum has been opened in Kaluga in the house where Tsiolkovsky died. The exhibits are mechanical devices and models which he made with his own hands. The scientist's manuscripts and copies of his published works are exhibited in glass showcases.

Konstantin Tsiolkovsky's tombstone bears the following prophetic words inscribed under the bas-relief of a rocket: "Mankind will not remain on the earth forever, but, in search of light and space, will at first timidly penetrate beyond the limits of the atmosphere and then finally conquer the spaces of the solar system."

A pioneering Russian aeronautical theorist and writer, he is the father of the Soviet space program. He built the first wind tunnel and solved fundamental problems about space travel, such as use of liquid rocket fuel, long before such activity was feasible. Although he was unappreciated in his lifetime, Sputnik's launch was made to coincide with his centennial.

This planet is the cradle of human mind, but one cannot spend all one's life in a cradle.
- Konstantin Tsiolkovsky.

_Konstantin Tsiolkovsky: His Life and Work_ by A. Kosmodemyanksky is the biography of Russian rocket pioneer Konstantin Tsiolkovsky. Tsiolkovsky's work included research into the mechanics of the all metal dirigible, designs for an aeroplane and wind tunnel, as well as the theory of rocketry. Tsiolkovsky also wrote on interplanetary travel as well as writing some science fiction and philosophical works. From an early age Tsiolkovsky showed an interest in mathematics, physics, and natural science; however, he was hampered by various difficulties including near deafness which overcame him after a bout of scarlet fever. Tsiolkovsky began his researches in the theory of the all metal dirigible. However, his work was not recognized or funded sufficiently in tsarist Russia. Later, when the Soviets came to power Tsiolkovsky became recognized for his work in rocketry. Tsiolkovsky believed that man would conquer space and his writing proved prophetic in that he suggested rockets would be used to achieve interplanetary travel. Tsiolkovsky offered several distinct designs for rockets and studied the chemistry necessary to understand their fuel requirements. He also derived an equation which showed the velocity necessary to escape the earth's gravitational field. He was regarded by many as a dreamer and utopian for his ideas on interplanetary travel and the future of the human race. His work continues to be important today and his theories have proven prescient to our modern continuing discovery of space. This book provides an excellent introduction to his scientific and mechanical thought as it pertains to rocketry.

Sound and image in perfect harmony
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2007-04-23

This El Paso, Texas-born author has lived many years in the desert, attuned to the sounds of the desert in both English and Spanish. Her love of this part of the country is evident in this elegant story that consists of the repetitive sounds of the owl, the toad, the hiss of the snake, the coo of the dove and the call of the coyote. Fish, mice, rain and wind add to nature's subtle symphony, but none of these sounds would be quite as memorable without the marvelous illustrations of Francisco X Mora. The artist brings the desert to life in his marvelous depictions of the animals in their natural habitat, all of them part of the grand vistas of nature's palette. In Spanish and English, text and artwork merge in a book that is a joy to share with early readers, a great adventure and an introduction into the world of words and nature's bounty, learning the language of the desert, sound and image in perfect harmony. Luan Gaines/2007.

PT boats in the Pacific
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-08-18
A very detailed account of the U.S. Navy's PT boats of World War 2, providing a concise look at action in the South Pacific. Service on one of these motor torpedo boats was filled with danger as the sailors took on the Imperial Japanese Navy in some of the major sea battles during the early part of the war. The account also helped to document some of the stories that I had heard earlier from my uncle, Elvie O'Daniel Jr., who served aboard one of these PT boats and was mentioned in the book. He was called "Danny" by his crewmates and he was a torpedo man. Recommended reading for any one interested in naval warfare during WW2.

Good PT Squadron History

My main reason for buying this book was because my father was in the PT Squadron that Mr. Cave wrote about - his name is listed in the back of the book. He was a Radioman chief and his name is in the book several times. He is 92 years old and can tell me the differences between fiction and truth in the book. It is so wonderful that he still has all his faculties and can remember these things about his exciting and dangerous career on PT boats during WWII. It is nice that someone wrote about how dangerous it was to serve on these small boats and what a contribution they were to the war effort.

The definitive story of the PT's at Guadalcanal

My grandfather was a member of Squadron X (Gavin J Hamilton, chief radioman). This is a personal account told by three members of the squadron -- two captains and the executive commander -- and it is the most compelling tale I've ever read on the subject. What 80 men managed to do with 8 plywood boats is almost impossible to believe. Patrol torpedo boats were only 70 feet long, armed with two fifty-caliber machine guns, a 20mm machine gun and four torpedoes, and powered by three Packard airplane engines. Almost nightly, they went up against Japanese destroyers, cruisers and transport ships. For months, they helped protect the Marines entrenched at Guadalcanal and racked up an amazing number of kills, helping to turn the tide and defeat the Japanese in the Solomons. The "mosquito boats" were never glamorized by the Navy, but they should have been. Their contribution to the war is awe-inspiring.

Malcolm X on Need for Uncompromising Struggle

In re-reading Malcolm X Speaks, I'm struck by how well he understood the viciousness of the U.S. system of oppression and how clearly he expressed the need for all-out, uncompromising struggle against it. The capitalist class lashed out at Malcolm X for these speeches, not just because he criticized their system, but because he dared to awaken the oppressed to their unconquerable human potential. Fighters from all over the world have studied this book, members of Sinn Fein in Ireland, farmers fighting foreclosure, opponents of police brutality, and supporters of the embattled Palestinians. This book of Malcolm X's Speeches was begun while Malcolm was alive with the publisher and the editor that Malcolm selected, and speeches he wanted in the book. This begins the series of books by Malcolm X published by Pathfinder Press in collaboration with his family as more speeches, interviews, and talks by Malcolm X have been discovered. The aim here is to put Malcolm X's words first. Read them for yourself. Find out why Malcolm was a reasoned, passionate, but uncompromising opponent of US imperialism's wars against oppressed peoples, in Africa, in Vietnam, in the Mid-East. Malcolm can really inspire you about the fights we need.

Don't just read what people have to say about Malcolm X! Read what he had to say - about the American system, about internationalism, about racism. This collection begins in November 1963, right before Malcolm X was silenced and expelled by the Nation of Islam, and extends to a couple of days before his assassination in February 1965.

International Intrigue Starring Herbert Marshall

Review Date: 2008-08-18
I owned this marvelous collection for years, finally losing it in a move. It is tons of radio fun. Herbert Marshall was perfect as the Secret Agent traveling to exotic locations to thwart the bad guys. The show had danger and intrigue in large doses, and sidekick Pagan Zeldschmidt provided some humor.

The shows on this collection come from later in the series, after the formula for The Man Called X had been perfected. The episodes, available on tape or compact disc, are as follows: Five Ounces of Treason -- Japanese Underground -- Spy on the Orient Express -- Submarine Pirates -- As Black as Diamonds -- North of 38 -- Missing Microfilm in Iran -- Dope Smuggling in Mexico -- Free Newspaper Owner Killed in Vienna -- Operation Zero -- Arab Farm Loan -- Indonesian Oil -- The Big Lie -- Missing Oil Field Plan -- Formula "H" Microfilm -- Radio Freedom -- The Golden Camellia -- G.I. Insurance Racket.

Herbert Marshall did some of his best work in this entertaining radio series, one of the finest of its kind. Radio fans will love hearing these shows of international intrigue once again. A must have for radio lovers.

I don't think you have to be extraordinarily "yankee doodle dandy" to enjoy these shows. I am a fan of radio shows and I think this is one of the best dramatic series. I am also a Herbert Marshall fan. The stories are intelligent and plausible. The plots are surprisingly similar to actual events occurring today. Unlike the reviewer before me I did not detect any "McCarthy-ism" in the text.

As someone who grew up with a love for America instilled in me, I have found this collection to be most wonderful. It is serious in nature with subtle humor that is blended wonderfully.

Anti-communism sentiment is readily apparent and the occasional philosophical statements by the star, Ken Thurston, are welcome breaths of fresh air. Any American with patriotism in their blood will love this collection of 6, 90 minute tapes.

One of the Best Writers Ever.

Review Date: 2006-11-05
Many years ago I read the story "Killdozer" in an anthology book of some sort, and never forgot the story. I didn't know anything about the author, and had no idea that he wrote many more stories beyond the one I had had the opportunity to read. Then I stumbled across this series of books in Amazon, bought one, read it, loved it, and now have all ten volumes in my collection.

So here's my verdict: Theodore Sturgeon was not just one of the best writers of Science Fiction; he wasn't just one of the best writers of short stories. He was, one of the best writers ever, period. While the stories are cloaked in the veneer of science fiction, they are in fact, stories of deep insight into the human condition. You cannot read these volumes and not be touched, moved, and inspired. Don't miss the opportunity to read some of these wonderful stories. And if you're truly inspired, get the short novel More Than Human.

It's Sept 2006, and I just spotted the following listed on the Locus site, scheduled for June 2007 release. I suppose this is good news, though it means I'm going to have to buy another bookcase.

Sturgeon, Theodore * When You Care, When You Love: The Complete Stories of Theodore Sturgeon, Volume XI * (North Atlantic, cln, hc)

Wonderful collection

Review Date: 2005-05-25
This latest volume is again an excellent addition to the series. I just wish we would be able to find out what's going on with the rest of the books: this was originally supposed to be a ten volume collection but since this latest volume only goes through 1960, there is clearly more material to be collected. Some of the volumes are of shorter length then others, which also puzzles me. Material isn't being left out to keep down the page count?

In any case, stories like "The Graveyard Reader" show the sensitivity and skill that only a master like Sturgeon can convey in a short story. If you're already a fan, you know this; if not, buy the book. Sturgeon truly was one of the finest American short story writers ever.

Origami foil paper

First of all, this is not a book, it's a collection of 18 sheets of foil backed with white paper, for use in folding origami models. The foil is reasonably good quality and does not crack when you make a sharp fold as some do. The range of colours is quite good though as always in a multi pack like this there are some you may not want to use. The sheets are cut very accurately and the papers work well for folding complex models as the foil is very thin.

I regard the cost as being the one thing against this product, there is no need for all the extra packaging and the paper could easily have been sold in its cellophane wrapping only with just a tab at the top or a cardboard insert with the publisher information, and then it could have cost far less. However it's difficult to find good quality origami foil, this is similar in feel to Japan foil so seasoned folders will be pleased to have an easily available supply.

I have the first edition (2001).

Despite the fact that I think some "axioms" of economics are based on muddy, suspect foundations, I gave 5 stars to this book because it is a FUNNY and very didactic introduction to microeconomics. So that, if you want to grasp the main principles of this area I think you will have an excelent "companion" in your hands. Most examples are very practical and cool.

Their macroeconomics book is also very didactic. I think it is a characteristic of the authors.

In this study guide, Hall and Lieberman provide an excellent accompaniment to their brilliant text. All the exercises are very clear, as is the answer key, which gives one the opportunity to see where one went wrong in a particular concept. The scope of the study guide is exactly the same as that of the book. Basically, if you can do everything in the guide, you have mastered their concepts.
