While there are very few full-character samples shown, this book is a wonderful jaunt through typographic history and an excellent (and often hilarious) reminder of what went into the graphic arts before computers (the Solotype foundry were phototypesetters). A huge number of these fonts can be found under different names today as freeware or shareware, and it's becoming a fun winter project of mine to track down as many of these old types as I can on the Internet. Dover has a fine collection of many of Dan Solo's fonts already digitized and available for sale inexpensively, though by no means all of them.

Wow! What a Nice Collection of Type!

I received my Solotype Catalog today and it was beyond anything I expected! I have worked with type for over 60 years and this is a wonderful collection of type and includes the colorful 19th Century fonts as well as recent fonts (to 1992). Special effects are well presented. This book is a must for anyone interested in type and letterforms.

this is a great book to get really inspired and makes to instantly want to create something beatifull with it. Only problem is to get it in your computer system (digitalize it) which takes me about one hour for most headline fonts which don't need so much car

A MUST for anyone who loves typography!

Dan Solo's book has the most beutiful fonts I've seen. He has a love of typography, and this comes out not just in the quality and number of fonts, but in the manner they are presented. I did my wedding invites with these fonts, and keep looking for reasons to bring back such beautiful typefaces as Nicholas Cochin, or authentic Gold Rush era such as Smuggler, French Kate, and Lyons Egyptian.

If you want to be a berean christian, you should know what the scriptures show about this subject.
Especially with all of the importance that is put on church revenue, which after head-count, is the second most sacred object.(Mk 12.38-40)
Don't be cow-towed by a golden calf.
Know the subject yourself.

The author really hit on some of the ideas and viewpoints that I came to some time ago about the subject of tithing.

The book demonstrates that there are several passages in scripture that are seldom, if ever, dealt with in the modern church. For instance, scriptures dealing with "redeeming" the tithe, eating the tithe and having a party with the tithe (never hear that taught today), where the tithes were brought, for whom, and for what reason the tithes were collected.

The author discusses the scriptures which deal with the tithing ritual and command and shows how using them and applying them to a New Testament believer presents all kinds of problems because it is a misapplication to do so.

The author appears to be a former "Word of faith" individual and although he has friends and knows pastors that are still devoted to word/faith teachings, he takes a strident tone with word/faith teachers accusing them of "begging" for money and tithes.

I would not go so far as to say that the ministers whom he mentions "beg" for money per se, but he does make his point about the emphasis on tithing which is prevelant in the church--both brick and mortar and electronic.

A good solid book on a major issue in the body of Christ today and highly recommended.

An excellent biblical analysis of tithing

Some of the best arguments I've read on the subject matter. The author presents clear, easily readable exegesis of the biblical passages that relate to tithing. Parker has a bone to pick with "word of faith" teachers, but makes very valid points with regard to their pleas for money. This book helped me prioritize my giving and did the same for people I've passed my copy onto. No one reading this book will ever be able to tithe again while ignoring the plight of the poor.

This book is about a young fellow named Wedge whose mom (Sally) just got married to a man named King who has a son named Andrew. King owns a putt-putt course. Sally announces one morning that her and Andrew were going on a camping trip and King and Wedge would stay at home. Wedge didn't really like King so he didn't like that idea. If you read this book you will find out how Wedge and King learn to love each other and be friends. This is a great book!

Best Unix book I've found

Review Date: 2007-12-14
I've tried many times to find a book that clearly explains Unix in a friendly manner. I should have realized that the Apple ethos was the missing element in all the terse, disjointed treatments I found elsewhere. This book is a dream come true: a book about Unix that is as close to being enjoyable to read as the subject allows. It may not have everything there is to say about unix (I found a few things missing or covered too briefly for my tastes), but the book walks the reader through Unix so gently that I never once felt the blinding frustration that quickly overwhelms me during previous attempts. After this introduction other books (more comprehensive, less humane) can be read as references. Well done!

I have a working understanding of UNIX and am a Mac user. In my experience, this book is ideally targeted for someone like me that wants to improve UNIX skills and prefers to do so on a Mac. Other texts I've consulted seem to jump too fast between really elementary subjects to needs of a system admin. The depth here is still rich, but the reader has time to digest the information before getting to more complex constructs.

Excellent, easy to understand. You won't find better...

I loved the first edition of this book, but was thrilled when the updated version was released. (The original book was written before Mac OS X adopted the bash shell by default, so many of the examples were out of whack with later releases of the OS).
I use this as my primary Unix reference at work - where we do not use Macs! It is a comprehensive and easy reference.

I recommend this and O'Reilly's Learning Perl as the two best books (especially if you have a Mac at home) to build your professional Unix chops quickly.

I loved this book. Drawing on examples of athletes, artists, scientists, and many others who have excelled in a range of fields, the book is both instructive and inspiring. Visionary behavior is living a full and well-rounded life, and the book discusses how developing various capacities in ourselves will help us achieve that. I found the book to be a nice balance of idealism and realism, looking optimistically to the future, but solidly grounded in the present. The real-life examples provide great models and nicely illustrate each point. No quick fix solutions or band-aids here. I think the book hits on some profound truths in a refreshing way that will resonate with people of any age and background. Reading the book made me want to be better and provided instructions on how to do so. I highly recommend it to others.

This is a book well worth reading. It is a step by step journey into the power of the mind. The author uses mental imagining to create a vision of those behaviors needed to find the path that leads to success.

He uses a variety of examples of successful people who have already found those secrets inside of themselves. This book provides the creativity, spiritual awareness, insightfulness, and guidance to help you become a self full-filled person.

His message of hope is written in a lovely, flowing way. He tells us how we got here, and where we might go in the manner of a strong, kind mentor. His ideas for building character, talent and wisdom are complemented by his ideas on leadership, and a better world. I loved it.

This book is written extremely well throughout. It is the kind of short book that you feel you want to and should just read all through, from front to back. I almost did (if it wasn't for starting it late at night!) It is almost exactly as the episode on TV portrayed it, which is also a good point. Well worth a read even if you're not an x-phile, if you are, then it's a must-read book.

knowledge scales and political sophistication are key variables in social science studies that often are used without really thinking about what they mean or measure. This book provides insight into this problem and real solutions to solve it, in addition to the primary context of how informed americans are about politics. Great work and a must have for any collection.

Who Knows What and Why

Review Date: 2004-03-09
Anyone interested in the knowledge levels of the American public, especially in terms of political opinions and where that type of knowledge comes from, will find this book very informative and rewarding. Delli Carpini and Keeter have accumulated a very well researched and documented mass of data concerning what the American people know about many different categories of politics. In an enlightening fashion they break down political knowledge not just into different categories of information, but also by demographic categories in the general population. We find that socio-economic status is as important to political knowledge levels as personal interest or media exposure, leading to occasionally worrisome conclusions about how average people can truly make a difference.

This book does sometimes lapse into unnecessarily complex statistical models rife with under-explained regression analyses and coefficients (which should have been relegated to the Appendix section), while the writing style tends to be repetitive and is generally very verbose. Meanwhile, the conclusive analysis of "why it matters" is a bit rushed at the end of the book. But regardless of those issues, this book shows convincingly that the American public's knowledge of their own nation's politics is both more complex than may be expected, but that their knowledge is not always put to the most effective uses. Happily, the authors show that citizens typically do not consign political perceptions into simplistic liberal vs. conservative and black-and-white ideologies, as you may guess from the behavior of politicians and the media. However, we can also see here that the knowledge of the American masses is not frequently put to the best of uses, either by themselves or their leaders. [~doomsdayer520~]

*What Americans Know About Politics and Why It Matters* is an important book in that it reveals how informed voters have more stable, consistent opinions and are much more resistant to irrelevant information (such as commentary in the media and campaign rhetoric, sound bites, and photo ops). It also reveals that informed voters hold opinions that more closely match those of the Founders of the United States -- including personal responsibility and limited federal powers -- than do those who are ignorant of the issues.

A Muslim speaks out about injustice

Review Date: 2008-09-08
Amir Makin, in his book A WORTHY MUSLIM, takes on the world's treatment of its citizens. He makes specific references to the present day, as well as times past. He talks of Malcolm X and how his trip to Mecca changed his outlook on life as well as his response to Islam and the African American fight for freedom. He also discusses how Moses managed, with the help of Allah, to get the Israelites out of bondage in Egypt. David and his defeat of Goliath also fit tidily into this book. H. Rap Brown, now serving time in Florence, Colorado, in isolation, was unfairly convicted of a murder he did not commit.
His overall premise is if people were listening to what Allah said in the Quran, they would not be treating each other in the manner they do. They would not be abusive toward their fellow man. He also notes how Muslims have been demonized in the United States since 9/11. It is definitely an interesting book, and certainly caused me to stop and think of all the injustices that are going on it the world.

This book is excellent for someone who is familiar with these stories from a biblical or a quranic perspective. It also sheds light on islams fundamental principles and practices and how they are expressed to improve ones self, family and community.

Does the solution to fixing Islam's current problems lie within the Quran itself? "A Worthy Muslim: Quranic Tools Needed to Overcome Oppression and Imperialism in Order to Institute Justice" is a treatise written by author Amir Makin, preaching that the solutions to the problems that the Muslim world experiences can be repaired - if Muslims would only look more closely at what the Quran truly states. With other controversial viewpoints, such as the potential claim that Islam is not in fact a religion, "A Worthy Muslim: Quranic Tools Needed to Overcome Oppression and Imperialism in Order to Institute Justice" is highly thought-provoking and recommended for community library Islamic studies collections as well as for any student of Islam looking for fresh insights.

Knowing how to apply knowledge correctly is called wisdom.

To me, that is one of the best lines in this book. I am not Muslim, yet that fact was no hindrance in following this thought provoking book.

Being African American and female, my knowledge of Islam was mostly gleaned from news stories and sound bites from or about Louis Farrakhan and bin Laden. Although I knew, logically, that I was not getting the whole picture, I was not interested enough to investigate further.

That's why I'm so thankful for this book. The author explains the tenets of Islam and gives VERIFIABLE historic evidence to prove his points. He uses clear examples to state that true Islam does not tolerate prejudice or self grandiosness. He explains how greed and selfishness lead to oppression and injustice and how learning and applying Islamic principles could eliminate society's ills. And you don't have to be Muslim to understand, appreciate, or apply some of these principles.

Reading this book exposed me to just how much I DIDN'T know about Islam.
Thanks to the author for the word list with definitions. I never lost my train of thought looking up an unfamiliar word.

I found this to be a helpful guide to Muslim culture. It left me with lingering thoughts and some questions: Would a Muslim state or gov't as defined by the author be tolerant and accepting of other religions? What to do with leaders/citizens whose Islamic practices are different?

Due to my job I am forced to read a lot of technical literature. I never got as much technical up-to-date information explained in such an intelligible way. Compared to other books dealing with manufacturing processes (which are mostly written by scientists in a very, very scientific way), in this book you've got the impression that the author virtually tells you the modern fundamentals of manufacturing. This makes this book easily understandable. Nowadays, High Speed Machining is well established in manufacturing. The future will bring High Performance Machining which means that the metal removal rates are significantly higher at high cutting speeds. As far as High Performance Cutting is concerned, this book covers also the theories of the dynamic behaviour of the cutting process. Therefore, chatter is of great importance. The author explains the two present "Chatter Theories" in detail and enables the reader to perform his own calculations on process stability. I strongly recommend this book to all engineers and students of mechanical engineering who want to know the latest scientific results explained in a comprehensible way. This book is a must in the bookcase.

The contents are very up-to-date and full with his own research results (which are cutting-edge). Also, the book's price has been kept very reasonable so that it is "student friendly".
