This wonderful resource on contemporary sailing vessels is published annually by ASTA, the American Sail Training Association. You can also get a copy free if you join ASTA (a worthy organization, if you are interested in sail training or traditional sailing ships). ...

The ASTA directory provides a comprehensive listing of traditional sailing ships in the US and abroad. Many of the ships listed offer sail training programs; others carry passengers for hire. It is a valuable resource for anyone interested in going to sea as a sail training student, or looking for work in traditional sail.

This is an excellent book!

This is an excellent book. Everyone who is interested in sail training or tall ships should own a copy. It helped me find my way around and I am very gratefull to the author for spending the time to put together such a complete and comprehensive listing of sail training vessels. The contact information for the vessels is really what sets this book apart, because it really wouldn't be very helpfull if I read about a sail training ship that I wanted more information on, and then couldn't get in touch with them.

Northern New Mexico traditions and culture

The Santero's Miracle is a very sweet story that captures the culture and traditions of Northern New Mexico. The persons who carve saints (santeros) are highly regarded here. Many families have a multi-generational tradition of carving.

This story illustrates the unique culture that developed in the remote mountains of Northern New Mexico. This is a rare place in America.

The illustrations are exquisite. It doesn't matter what religious tradition the reader practices -- this is a story for everyone.

Award-winning author and illustrator team Rudolfo Anaya and Amy Cordova present The Santero's Miracle: A Bilingual Story, an English/Spanish Christmas tale about the power of miracles. Don Jacobo is teaching his visiting grandson Andres how to become a santero; the two of them are working on a carving of San Isidro, the patron saint of farmers. Due to the great snowfall, Andres' parents cannot come home in time for the holiday, and don Jacobo's neighbor, don Leopoldo, is severely ill but cannot reach the hospital. Then don Jacobo dreams of a miracle: San Isidro plowing with two oxen and and an angel helping. The meaning of the dream brings about a reminder of the power of compassion, faith, and love. The bright color illustrations practically leap off the page in this joyful and uplifting story meant to be shared.

Modern Scandinavian architecture at its best

I love Scandinavian architecture, both traditional and modern. This book has well done photographs of some of the most simply eloquent modern Scandinavian homes. It makes you want to live in one of these most appealing dwellings. Every so often I look through the book once more and enjoy the beautifully photographed exteriors and interiors of the homes all over again.

The first time I went to Scandinavia, I arrived in Helsinki late in the evening. I went to my hotel, and in the first few minutes I understood what was so special about Scandinavian design. The otherwise ordinary hotel room stood out as one of the best I have ever seen. It was not a tremendously expensive hotel, rather middle of the road. But simple things: the door, the faucets in the bathroom, the furniture, all were so much more elegant looking than what we find in the United States.

Now I'm in the process of designing a house. I went looking for a book on interior design that would reflect what I had seen there. I found several, but this one shows more elements of design that reflect what I like. Simple things, like an office table. Easy enough to find, once I knew what I was looking for. A bed: simple, elegant, and better looking than anything I've seen in other publications.

If you're looking for something for yourself or if you're doing a Scandinavian home for a customer I highly recommend this book.

What else could any diver ask for.

This is the 42nd book from this author and he is still going strong. More importantly, within these pages the visiting diver will find all the information he is looking for. Whilst some might argue there are already too many diving guides to this area, this guide stands apart from all others because it has it all.

The book commences with a very interesting and informative view of Orkney. Next we have a fascinating potted history of how the German High Seas Fleet came to be interned and then scuttled followed by the story of the salvaging of many of those vessels. Then there is the information required by all visiting divers "Travelling and Staying in Orkney" with notes on how to get there, where to stay and what else there is to see.

After a one page introduction to the Scapa Map project - which exists to document the wrecks of Scapa Flow by imaging, the book gets down to cases and, chapter by chapter, explains and describes those wrecks which interest divers from all over the world. This is where the book comes into it's own. Each of these chapters commences with a map showing the wrecks under discussion in relation to the remainder. Then we get down to facts, statistics and diving detail interspersed with historic photographs I have never seen before. All are interesting, some are pretty amazing. With only the occasional underwater photograph, each of the major shipwrecks is fully described and incorporates one or more scan images to show exactly what that wreck looks like on the seabed today.

Predominantly, Scapa attracts divers because of the remains of the German High Seas Fleet and whilst these are given full and excellent coverage, the book does not stop there. Next up are chapters headed; Other Wrecks in Scapa Flow, World War II Wrecks, Breaking the Flow Defences (which provides an excellent account of HMS Royal Oak), Orkney Italian Chapel, War Graves (HMS Hampshire and HMS Vanguard), Churchill Barriers (which includes an incredible series of photos of the "Collindoc" from her being mostly underwater to mostly underground!) and finally Scapa Flow Reef Dives - all of which are self explanatory.

With appendices containing contact and other useful information, this single book has it all.

The product itself is well laid out, easy to follow and equally as easy to read. What else could any diver ask for.

This little book is a treasure. I enjoyed it so much I have shared stories from it many times. I would like my grandson to read it when he's old enough. I regret to say though, I don't think he will get "it". Appreciation for the world of nature and animals in their natural habitat seems to be a thing of the past, as is taking the time to really observe and learn.
And so...I'm keeping this little gem in my library and perhaps in a few generations someone will pick up great-great grandmother's book and find a world so foreign and beautiful they will be touched.

The author is right on target to assume that kids are interested in making learning easier and more fun. This book includes many specific strategies for building confidence in reading, writing, spelling, math, etc. There is help in organizing time, setting goals, standing up for themselves, coping with testing, etc. This book has reproducible masters to help reinforce learning.

LD Students CAN Help Themselves in School

Review Date: 2000-10-14
Kids with learning disabilities often feel like failures in school. Their past experiences tell them that they are helpless to find ways to compete and succeed in the classroom. This book gives many practical, helpful suggestions that can turn a student who feels like a loser into a winner! The best thing an LD student can do is become his or her own best advocate. The ideas in this book make that possible. It is easy to read (about a third grade reading level) and organized clearly. Some of the chapters are titled: You CAN Get Organized, You CAN Learn in Different Ways, You CAN Handle Testing, You CAN Get Along with Others, etc. This emphasis on "you CAN" is just what people with learning disabilities need! The authors also include lists of suggestions for becoming a better reader, speller, more organized, etc. If you know someone with a learning disability, do that person and yourself a favor and get this book. Read it together, if possible. Rhoda Cummings and Gary Fisher have written several books about what they call Learning Differences (LD), and this is one of the best!

Another great tale from R.L.LaFevers!

Review Date: 2006-04-11
"The Secrets of Grim Woods" continues the saga of Kenric, a young blacksmith in training, who is sent by King Thorgil to Grim Woods, or Mithin Dur as it is called by the Fey who live there, to seek an alliance with the Fey folk to forge a blade of power with which to permanently defeat the evil lord Mordig. Protected only by three stones of power--earth, sun, and moon--Kenric and his faithful goblin friend Hnagi journey back into Grim Woods to confront the Fey and try and convince them to help the king fight Mordig.

This second installment in the series "Lowthar's Blade" is even better than the first! I absolutely love the characters Ms. LaFevers brings to this tale. Linwe, the Fey girl who was the first to discover Kenric in Grim Woods in "The Forging of The Blade", is back in Book 2, and she is just as snippy and argumentative as ever! Thrown together more by fate than choice, she and Kenric have an uneasy alliance as she realizes that just because he is Human doesn't mean he isn't speaking the truth. As Kenric digs deeper into the history of the Fey people to try and learn how to forge the True Blade of Power, he uncovers a secret that could destroy them all. Linwe must make some hard choices as to where her loyalties lie, and her decisions will mean life or death to those around her.

With rich details, more description, and some delightful new characters ,"The Secrets of Grim Woods" takes the reader deeper into the realms of Lowthar than the first book did. I loved the Fey village and was able to see everything quite clearly in my mind. Ms. LaFevers' imagination really takes flight in this story and I love how she deftly weaves more and more details into the story line without ever being overwhelming or redundant.. Absolutely delightful read, and I must really recommend this book to anyone who loves fantasy--young or old alike, this is a series of books that you shouldn't miss.

What a wonderful story!

Second in the Lowthar's Blade trilogy, The Secrets of Grim Wood has all the best elements of children's fantasy - magic, a quest, vivid creatures and characters, brave children fighting an evil force, a struggle to overcome prejudice... It was great to see more of Kenric's story. I got completely caught up in the character growth of the Fey girl Linwe, and I especially loved her pet hilfen, Dulcet. I couldn't put this book down, and I can hardly wait for Book 3!
