I love this book! As an African-American mother with 3 daughters I can really appreciate the illustrations of Nona's thick braids. Nona struggles with honesty after being ridiculed by the neighborhood kids. In other words, Nona tries to destroy her old ugly bike after the neighborhood bullies tease her. Nona thinks if her old bike is lost, or destroyed, then her parents will be forced to buy her the new Red Racer in the bike store window.

Unfortunately, this great book is out of print. If you want to read it you will have to visit your local library, and if they don't have it, ask them to get it for you via Inter-Library Loan (ILL) and they will probably get it for you in a few days or weeks. It's worth the wait.

I've written the publisher about getting The Red Racer re-printed, but have received no response.
If you have any ideas on how to get this book, and other out-of-print books, re-printed, please e-mail me at bransford5@yahoo.com Thanks!

Children will relate to the storyline of wanting something so bad they'd do almost anything to get it. The moral of the story is that sometimes anything might be too much! The illustrations are wonderful and the storyline is entertaining and educational. I highly recommend this title for elementary age children.

A need to rethink the 'Regionalism' of the Regionalists

Review Date: 1998-09-25
This book makes you rethink any ideas you might have about Regionalism. Whether you agree with James Dennis or not is up to you, but he certainly does bring up some very interesting ideas. The basic ideas of the Regionalism school are initially laid out for the reader, and from this beginning it is already possible to see the weak foundation of the very definition of "Regionalism," as it was defined NOT by the artists, but by their critics and the public. The sterotyping generalities inherent in this 'school' set the stage for Dennis' questioning of the similarities of the work of Thomas Hart Benton, Grant Wood, and John Steurat Curry, the triumvirate of Regionalism. The author proceeds to explicate the inherent differences between the 3 artists' work, as well as the eventually obvious flawed general definition of "Regionalism." Dennis breaks down his discussions into realism vs. abstraction, realistic subject matter vs. fantasies, the ideas of nationalism and fascism in the artists' work, their varying depictions of women, and finally compares the three Regionalists to three contemporary modernists, Charles Demuth, Charles Sheeler, and Marsden Hartley. Dennis concludes with the assertion that the so-called "Regionalists" are in many ways more "modern" than their modernists contemporaries. The book has plenty of pictures, sadly only in black and white, and thus the book is a surprisingly quick read. Each chapter is thorough however, and must be studied to be fully understood. The reader should have some art historical background, and some knowledge of the history of the first half of the 20th century. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in Regionalism, and the history of American art. Makes you think.

Finally. A well thought out and well executed book about a major movement in American art that is often dismissed as being one dimensional. Dennis' introspective look into the most revered "Regionalist" artists not only offers engaging scholarship, but a very good education in American social history as well. A must read for anyone who thinks they know what "Regionalism" is.

A highly readable, and practical, book

I bought "Rifles for Africa" prior to a 2004 safari to Tanzania, and found in it a treasure trove of practical information. Although John
Taylor's "Big Game and Big Game Rifles" and "African Rifles & Cartridges" have long been considered the standard works on the subject, both are somewhat dated, having been originally published in the 1940's. Woods addresses the substantial technological advances that have occurred since then, particularly with regard to bullet construction, which he fully explores and discusses. In addition, Woods devotes entire sections of his book to recommendations regarding optics and calibers. "Rifles for Africa" displays a wealth of practical information, derived from Woods' lifetime of hunting throughout the African continent: he names names and pulls no punches. It is also illustrated throughout with highly interesting photographs and informative diagrams. Despite its encyclopedic scope, I found "Rifles for Africa" to be entertaining and fascinating, and consider it an essential addition to any sportsman's library.

Valuable insights of rifles

Gregor Woods is one of the writers for Magnum, a South African hunting magazine. While this book is not written in the same style as John Taylor's great classic "African Rifles & Cartridges" it still covers much the same ground and brings the material on the topic of African rifles and ammunition up to date. (The book was published in 2003).

The discussion of terminal ballistics, in two sections, "Bullet Design and Construction & Ballistics and `Killing Power" is one of the best I have ever read. These two sections in the book alone are worth the price of this entire book. Woods first discusses in detail "premium bullets" which weren't around in 1948 when John Taylor wrote his book "African Rifles & Cartridges." Woods correctly points out that if "premium bullets", like we have today, were around in the 1920s or earlier the advice, passed down, from professional hunters and sportsman from that era would be much different.

In the section "Ballistics and `Killing Power" He also debunks a lot of myths, such as hydrostatic shock, and looks at what really happens when bullets collide with flesh. Woods points out that it is the mechanical damage to the actual organs and bones, which count! In the later chapters of this section he also covers practical exterior ballistics in the field.

Gregor Woods feels that the best bolt action is the 98 Mauser and its variations. (Winchester Model 70, Dakota Model 76, CZ 550/ZZK 602 and Ruger Model 77 MK II) A view shared by many other people. This is in sharp contrast to Taylor who felt that fine English double rifles were the best. On this same topic of double vs. magazine rifle some very interesting problems are discussed with regard to the double, aside from just the expense. Woods points out how sensitive doubles are to any variation in loads. Then there is a phenomena called "over stressed steel." Where pre-war doubles, when using monolithic solids have the barrel split lengthwise. Not a good situation when you have spent $ 50,000.oo USD on the rifle! (Time to break out the tranquilizers and anti depressants!). And speaking of used doubles, there seems to be quite a bit of fraud going around in the market, such as coating chambers so that pits will not show, polishing up bores and other slick horse trader/used car salesman tricks. Hence, unless you buy your double new fraud is always a danger. I can attest from first hand experience that a well made double is a thing of beauty. Are they worth the $25,000 + price tag? I doubt it, except in a few very narrow applications.

Finally, Woods discusses scopes and how to mount them on rifles. This to is topic that is often ignored. According to Woods a scope should be mounted as low as possible so that a firm cheek weld is obtained. The importance of a cheek weld is also something I learned in shooting high power rifle. I applied some of his ideas, such as mounting the scope as low as possible They worked just as he said it would.

In closing I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in hunting rifles. At least 85% of the information contained in this book is transferable to hunting anywhere on earth.

Not Just Another Novel

This was a breath of fresh air in an atmosphere of tired and lifeless novels. Wood takes "Phoenix" in a direction few authors would dare go - into the underbelly of corporate and political life all the while keeping focus on family and faithfulness. A couple twists around mid-way veer off into a direction the reader wouldn't suspect and yet the story comes around to closure that satisfies even the pickiest of readers. Backroom politics, corporate scandal, international intrigue, family strife, culture shock, drugs and a fair amount of lusty sex drive this story from beginning to end. The story moved rapidly and kept me on edge all the way. I loved it and can hardly wait for the next effort from this new writer.

If you want a story about the ugly side of corporate life, this is it. Strong messages of ethics, integrity, fidelity, family run through this tale of payoffs, drugs, sex and the dingy side of business and politics in America. I really enjoyed it and, as a first novel, I think this is amazingly well-written. It's fast-paced, funny in spots, sad in others and really takes you on an emotional roller-coaster ride. For my money, this is a best-seller!

I have been treating individuals who have committed sex offenses beginning in 1983. I have used several different workbooks over the years as an adjunct to individual, group and family therapy. This workbook is clearly the most comprehensive cirriculum that I have found. It is an excellent resource that covers various treatment techniques focusing on the myriad of problem sexual behaviors that result in the need for professional intervention. The chapters follow a thoughtful progression through treatment in a manner that challenges clients to look at their destructive behaviors without shaming them. I strongly recommend this book to anyone who works with men who have engaged in sexually abusive behaviors.

Everyone could use a little "fun" therapy!
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2001-02-23
This is a wonderful children's book for ALL ages! The text and illustrations are both light-hearted and poignant. The text is written in delightful rhyme reminiscent of Dr. Seuss and Ludwig Bemelmans. When Rosemary Rose, who makes rainbows, can't seem to get her colors just right, she is sent to Tiffany Espree for a "cure." Tiffany takes Rosemary on a wonderful journey (in Tiffany's own backyard!) and shows her the importance of good, old-fashioned play. I wonder how many children -- who these days can be so hooked into TV, Nintendo, and extra-curricular activities -- get "time off" to reap the joys of building sand castles, climbing trees, and finding pictures in the clouds. I know my family (kids and parents alike) would certainly benefit from a little of Tiffany's "fun" therapy! What makes this book particularly neat is the story of how it came to be. (Read the Afterword first!) The author worked as a child psychologist and wrote the book at the request of a seven-year-old patient, who gave the book its title and helped write the beginning of the story. A few year later, a friend of the author gave her the illustrations as a gift. Both the book and its origin are testaments to teamwork and friendship. Parents: read this book to your children, read it for your own enjoyment and, most importantly, "make time to do the things you love on the way."

A wonderful book for children of all ages!

This is a great book with a message that appeals to both adults and children. Children find the book entertaining and fun and adults appreciate its powerful message to keep life in balance by taking the time to play and enjoy life. The "story behind the story," which is summarized in the afterword, is amazing and heart-warming. The illustrations are bright and charming and create a tone of joy and livliness in this uplifting story. It is a must- read for all kids ages 3 to 103!

The story is about a girl (Rosemary Rose) who works in a factory making rainbows. She discovers that her "blues aren't true" because she is stressed and doesn't take the time to play. She seeks a "specialist" named Tiffany Espree, who leads her on several adventures to show her the importance of play. After Rosemary Rose spends some time with Tiffany Espree, she regains balance in her life and her "Blue Toe Vertigo is Vertigone!"

This is a delightful, whimsical, and therapeutic story that is a good book to read and re-read and/or to give as a gift. It would also be great to use in a professional/ counseling-type setting. Everyone should have this book!
