Anthony C. Wood, one of New York's most respected preservationists, has written a book that is both thoroughly researched and beautifully written. The only book of its kind, Preserving New York offers an illuminating history of New York City's preservation movement and the farsighted citizens who never gave up. The book's photographs, footnotes, bibliography and index seal Preserving New York as an outstanding chronicle of the (continuing) battle to save the city's past for the benefit of all New Yorkers, current and future.

Comprehensive, detailed, and thorough. Extensive documentation and end-notes. A good read for those interested in New York and/or historic preservation. Goes way beyond the common misconception that the crucial turning point was destruction of Penn Station.

I thought I knew (almost) everything about seminars, until I read Len Wood's book. I'm a seasoned seminar leader, in face-to-face and the virtual world, and I found this book exceptionally thought-provoking, motivating, and relevant to today's issues. Although the book is comprehensive in scope, it is easy to read because the writing style is friendly and the pages are visually appealing. I have especially enjoyed the quotations that start each chapter (especially chapters 4 and 10) - for me, they cut to the core in refocusing me on what it takes to be successful as a "seminar person" and also the things I need to do to prevent problems from occuring. If there is pressure on you to succeed with seminars, this is a must read. If you are just starting out in the field, purchasing this book and making it your friend could be the best investment you can make in your professional life.

For players and storytellers of Promethean: The Created, White Wolf's most underrated World of Darkness series, Strange Alchemies is a must-have if you want or need new Bestowments and Transmutations, a deeper look at the Lineages and Refinements, plus essays from various developers on things from Human Experience (Living and doing things as a human) to discovering the world around them for the Player Characters. Considering that Promethean was a limited series of only five books (The core book and four supplements), Strange Alchemies should definitely round out your P:tC collection.

Powerful, but who plays this game?

These Promethean books are well written and very mature. They seem to be the darkest books in the World of Darkness. While I greatly enjoyed reading them, I have to wonder who is playing this game? You can make a real powerhouse character, one that few if any of the other supernatural beings could take down, but the downsides of being so hated and having such a miserable existence seems to out weight any benefit. The opening story is about one of the "beautiful" Prometheans who wants love so much from the object of her affection, kissing and hitting are the same thing to her. I can't imagine role-playing that out with my friends. This is certainly not a game for children and even some adults will find it too intense. But if you like it the main Promethean book, give Strange Alchemies a try.

Dr. Wood's writing style and insights into the Psalms are just wonderful. The Psalms become powerful as Dr. Wood gives insight into the history of the time of the writing, the circumstances of the writer, etc. I lived on these books for a time and passed them on to a friend walking thru a tough time. She too, has found them so helpful.

Rev. Wood brings the Psalms alive with this insightful and spiritually rich commentary on this much loved book of the Bible. Each chapter presents one psalm with full text and insightful and inspirational commentary and illustration. I gave it to my wife for Christmas last year and she has enjoyed using it as a daily devotional.

An interesting gem in emphasizing fellowship with the Father
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2006-02-23
For 16 years now, I have been collecting, analyzing, and writing about "quiet time" as it appeared in the early Alcoholics Anonymous Christian Fellowship in Akron. Quiet Time was a must. The "Quiet Hour" in United Christian Endeavor Society, from which the Akron program derived its major principles also stressed this time. But people got so tangled up in A.A.'s Oxford Group episode that they ignored the real ingredients of Quiet Time as it derived from the Bible. Discussions centered around "two-way prayer", writing down thoughts, and checking them. But the real picture was quite different in the early A.A. program. It started with sonship. The connection with the Father didn't start with some listening program. It started with being born again of God's spirit and thus becoming one of his kids. And acceptance of Christ in early A.A., plus "conversions" as they existed in Christian Endeavor established the standing as a child. The thing I like about the instant little book is that it stresses the desire of God to communicate and be communicated with--to have fellowship. And the key is found in 1 John 1. The aim is to have fellowship with our Creator, His son Jesus Christ, and other believers (sons of God). How is that done? Prayer - which involves thanksgiving, praise, asking forgiveness, seeking healing, praying for others, asking to be shown what the Father really wants. Bible study - without study of the Bible, the keys to prayer for Christians is just not present. Then comes the seeking of guidance--seeking revelation from God as to what He wants and offers. Early AAs used devotionals to help them in this project--The Upper Room, The Runner's Bible, and My Utmost for His Highest. What then? Jesus spelled it out in Matthew Chapter 7--He who does the will of my Father which is in heaven. Obedience, then, the walk in the spirit and in love that constitutes the love of God - obeying His commandments. That completes the picture so that one can ask, pray, give thanks, and praise according to God's will.
The instant book would qualify as to approach and guidance. I like it. It's all about walking in the light as God is light. See my title, Good Morning: Quiet Time, Morning Watch, Meditation, and Early A.A. http://www.dickb.com/goodmorn.shtml
God Bless, Dick B.

fantastic resource - priceless

As someone who buys literally dozens of resource books for each hobby, trust me when I say this one is priceless -- especially for the more than reasonable cost. It's not as flashy as a Fons and Porter book, but it's packed with all the basics and some great fundamentals that most books skip over. It's like having your own very experienced quilter there to helps whenever you need. I find myself still grabbing it whenever I get a little stuck or doubt myself or get a little confused by something from another book. Whatever style of quilting you do, this book is essential to your collection.

As a teacher for 25 years, I have read many books to many children. Few have the impact of this one; the tiny size, inventiveness, and remarkable pluck of the 4 characters become part of our class' mythology, and continue to inspire the children long after the last page is read.

When I came across a copy of Quimble Wood at the library I was totally enchanted. I had to have this book! The story of the survival of the little Quimbles is lovely- but I have to admit the illustrations stole my heart- has anyone heard of any other work by Branka Starr? Wonderful!Searching for sequel- Quimble Winter!!

What a wonderful book to read to a child before bedtime! It reminded me of laying in the grass looking up at the stars and dreaming about things afar. The Cree legend elopes with the pursuit of your dreams, as rabbit and crane take you there.

Great Setting, Great Characters, Great Story

It's one of truisms of the newspaper business that every reporter has an unfinished novel sitting in his bottom desk drawer. Fortunately for lovers of good storytelling, the late Vince Kohler finished his--and three more besides. "Rainy North Woods" is the introductory volume in his series of Eldon Larkin mysteries.

Eldon Larkin isn't your typical mystery novel hero. He's a reporter for a small daily newspaper on the Oregon Coast, "The South Coast Sun," and he dreams more about finding a girlfriend and a car he can rely on than unraveling a big mystery. But when you have a circus elephant stomping a hapless Vietnamese immigrant to death, sightings of Bigfoot and UFOs, and an old-timer of an editor obsessed with "good copy!" what's a reporter going to do? Call the Enquirer? Not on your life!

This is literate, witty, humorous story-telling at its best, capturing the true flavor of the craziness that often seeps into these "Rainy North Woods." I'm grateful Vince Kohler gave us this wonderful book, and three more...and just sorry he left us too soon.

Look up a copy. You won't be disappointed!

This book is the best introduction to Tsvetaeva's work available in English. It's punchy, incredibly witty and drenched with irony. Livingstone does an amazing job preserving the poet's energy, imagery, rhythm and even rhyme schemes. The most sensitive translation ever. Enjoy!

Tsvetaeva's version of the Pied Piper of Hamlyn legend is one of her finest and most complex works. Angela Livingstone's translation is endowed with remarkable vitality.
