I recently saw NEW reprints at the pirate supply store at 826 Valencia in San Francisco. They looked like a private printing, and Amazon's database doesn't know about it. 826 Valencia doesn't list it on their website, but I bet they'd ship you a copy if you asked. 826valencia.org/store.

This is a wonderful little gem; I plan to buy several copies and bookcross it (www.bookcrossing.com).

Line diagrams that make the two rhyming birds and flowers resemble another, along with poem, such as this one:

"The Plover and the Clover can be told apart with ease.
By paying close attention to the habits of the bees
For entomologists aver, the bee can be in clover
While etymologists concur, there is no B in plover."

One entry on each page. Helps you to be able to distinguish the Sparrer from the Asparrergus!

Review Date: 2000-09-09
Gorgeous language captures that inevitable moment in every child's life when they feel the injustice and poignancy of death. Whether it be a family member or creature of nature, we all have experienced that one moment when we realized things will never be the same; the world is forever different. Ellen Wood weaves a beautiful story of yearning and vengence, and ultimate discovery for a young girl who seeks to understand why living things must die. A beautifully written story that is a joy to read-aloud.

This is a beautifully written story about a young girl's discovery of how life and death in the natural world are always linked together. If you love the outdoors and the animals that live by the rules of nature, and if you want your children to understand the relationships of animals in the natural world, this is a must read.

Way to go! Get it in writing!

CONGRATULATIONS to Larry for putting it all into words! I will definetely get the book, but I don't have to read it to know what it says. He was my mentor for many years and will remain my friend for life. If you have kids or work with kids, listen to what he has to say. Funny, I was looking him up on the internet to discover he's written a book. No doubt he bottom lines it into a few simple ideas. The things I learned from working with Larry is all any of us need to know is that we know we are loved and we feel safe. When it comes to setting limits, it is important to bottom line it, but be matter of fact about it. You don't have to yell, engage in arguing, or any of those things that make it worse instead of better. Nor is it "go to your room for 30 minutes because you hit Johnny, but "we treat ourselves and other people with respect. When you can do or say something to Johnny that shows him that respect, you can go about your business."
Forget the circumstances surrounding the conflict. Just have them own up to whatever value they treaded upon and make restitution in a way that relates to the problem. Focus on the few basic values. (i.e.respecting property, taking care of our personal responsibilities) Aside from all that, "affect" belonged on the football field where he coached for many years. The way he taught me to think makes a difference in my life still.

Thought provoking

This book is perfect for anyone who has kids, works with kids/teens or anyone who interviews people for a living. The book is filled with thought provoking questions that really stretch the imagination and make you think about your own values. I have used it as a resource for questions when interviewing people for new careers and competional panel evaluations. Excellent questions, and the answers will surprise you!

An absolute must for anyone who works professionally in creating America's symbol! As a sculptor of numerous public art life-size or larger pieces in bronze, this is the "new standard for reference". An absolute must for any wildlife artists' library! Should however be offered in a "Spiral Bound" Edition.

This is one of the best "how to" carving books I've come across in quite a long time. The projects are wonderful ( those cute, crooked little houses in cottonwood bark) and the authors have gone out of their way to make the directions clear and the photographs fit the explanations--or vice versa. There are even instructions for repairing blow outs, a not uncommon problem with bark carving cross grain. Woodcarver/Reviewer

The Illustrated Owl is an outstanding reference book in all aspects. The plates are clear and accurate; this is
a book that any wood carver should have in their library as well as wildlife artists and naturalists. I am not
aware of any other owl book that has the wealth of information that is presented in The Illustrated Owl. I
highly recommend this book for all public and private libraries.

Lithuanian Wood is this moment resting on my coffee table. The edges show a little comfort of wear and tear. I couldn't resist turning these pages... As Lithuania is neighbor to my own Latvia (I hold dual citizenship for Latvia and USA), Mayo's tales charmed me with similarities to the culture in which I was raised and nurtured. I am astounded that a non-Lithuanian could capture the essence of another culture so well.

A Must Buy for Lithuanian Americans!

This book provides a touching and artistic view of post-communist Lithuania. You really get a feel for how the years of communist rule affected the way people think, act, and live. The short stories are creatively interwoven and make this book an enjoyable and quick read.

Lush, complex, necessary poems

In this haunting debut, Paula Bohince shows us the complexity of a world that is as beautiful as it is violent, as violent as it is beautiful. In every poem in this collection, Bohince weaves images that dazzle and insights that will break your heart. If you believe poetry can show us what's true about the world, that it can teach us how and why to live, you need this book. I sure do.

The perfect marriage of lyric and narrative

Review Date: 2008-08-25
Bohince sketches in the essential details of a mystery--the murder of the speaker's father. With a skilled hand, she gives us just as much as we need to know and no more. Thus, we are intrigued and always anxious to read on to the next poem. The poet's narrative skills are enhanced by her deft touch with lyric elements. Perhaps most notable among her many virtues is her ability to create images and then create contrasting images and then weave the two together. For example, when the speaker enters the murder scene in "The Fatherless Room," she describes "worms dried in half-circles / and carpet starry with blood and gunpowder" while outside "there is the shorn field and snow / to make a lacy curtain." In "Acrostic: Outhouse," the speaker contemplates the women who once lived by the edge of Bayonet Woods. While their husbands disappeared into the woods, these women spent their days tatting lace, "gems of fine knots / until their men thread wholly into white roses, / sadly filigreed, as the wild roses / edging the outhouse are eaten by beetles." The rose reappears in "The Gospel According to John." John, a laborer on the father's farm, describes the murder: "When the wet rose bloomed / in the chest of the man I killed, I tried to concentrate / on its image, // tried to sit with that flower and feel / as God must: // the pleasure of His birds swollen with feathers, / His birds bound to the sky, // belonging to His kingdom of violence."

This is an outstanding debut collection. Highly recommended!

Essential Resource

Review Date: 2002-05-04
This book is the other half of the author's excellent Information Security Policies Made Easy (version 8), which provides 1175 ready-made policies on CD ROM. What makes this book complement the policy book is that once the policies are written they are useless without defined roles and responsibilities assigned to manage and enforce them,

Included in this book (and in soft copy on the accompanying CD ROM) are organizational mission statements that form the framework for policies, job descriptions for major security role players, and organizational structures with reporting relationships.

The book does not merely present the roles and responsibilities - it goes into the hows and whys, and steps you through the definition and development of a security function in which the roles and responsibilities are defined. More important, the author does not use a canned approach, but provides alternative structures that will allow you to develop and implement the organization that is best aligned to your company. This is one of the most practical and flexible approaches I've seen, and shows the author's extensive experience and realistic attitude. Equally important is the fact that small companies are also addressed, making this book valuable to organizations of all sizes.

You're stepped through the process of identifying your requirements, tailoring the documents provided on the CD ROM to reflect those requirements, and given an idea of the time and resources needed to implement them. In addition to the documented roles and responsibilities and organizational structures provided, this book also covers (and the CD ROM provides) pamphlets to promote security awareness, memos, forms, action plans, a sample security manual and standards, and other documents that will be needed to effectively implement a security organization.

The chapter on common mistakes is worth its weight in gold, as are the appendices, which cover staffing levels, qualifications (this is valuable to HR), and IS security metrics.

Regardless of company size or scope of your security organization, this book will save literally hundreds of hours of research, document development and planning. Even for a small company of 25-100 employees this book will pay for itself many times over, and for a large company the value that this book (and the companion book I mentioned above) represents can run into the tens of thousands of dollars.

Excellent Instructions

Review Date: 2001-12-05
This is an excellent pattern book for getting started in Intarsia. The book contains 12 projects varying from wildlife to Christmas to a puppy in a basket. Each project gets a little more challanging. All projects include a color picture of the finished project and full size plans to make the project, along with narration about the projects special features and 'Helpful Tips' to make the project easier to complete.

The first project includes 12 pages of narration and 41 color photos explaining and showing the different techniques of intarsia. Just follow along, step by step, and before you know it, you have a complete Brown Pelican you can be proud to display. The second project, Puppy in a Basket, has 16 pages of narration and 58 color photos to guide your way to a beautiful completed project. The last ten projects do not go into as much detail, only a few paragraphs and the completed finished color photo. However, many of the techniques discussed in the first two projects carry over to almost ALL intarsia projects.

A great beginner book for Intarsia, some nice simple Intarsia plans and a few challanging ones for the more experienced sawyer. A must for every scroll sawyer collection.

The authers begin by helping you through a project step by step. I followed along with them and my first project was a beautiful Brown Pelican. Their Instructions included wood selection and pattern use. You are then incouraged to go solo and hone your skills. The degree of difficulty of the patterns range from basic to an intermediate level. I encourage anyone with a scroll saw to begin with this book and getting into the fasinating hobby of intarsia. In no time they will be creating items of beauty to be proud of.
