Learn Direct Marketing the easy way

What a refreshing way to learn! Quite different from the often boring textbook approach so common with marketing books. This semi-autobiography reads like a novel, but teaches direct response advertising through example and life experiences.

Just starting out, in his second project, he acquired over 450,000 customers! (and those are repeat customers at that). He knew what he was doing. Plenty of wise advice in there. You can learn from his mistakes and successes.

I plowed through 1/2 the book in no time. By then I realized that the reading experience would be over too soon. So I shelved the rest of the book for a treat later on. (So technically this review is only for the first 1/2 of the book). This book is like candy. I got to ration it out before it's gone ;-)

Practial business Advice from Someone Who Has Succeeded

I read the book for the first time several years ago. Since then I've kept in on my desk to refer back to for practical advice about starting and running my internet business.

Much of Lyman's wisdom and insight into the mail order business is directly applicable to developing e-commerce sites for business customers: writing copy that stirs the reader to take action, measuring and testing the results of each ad, starting small and growing the business out of the profits it generates are a few of many gems he practiced.

In the book, his passion for doing what he loved, from a place that he loved, with people that he loved was inspirational to me. When I met him in person, he was also a great encouragement to me.

I'd recommend this book to anyone interested in in "Making a life" while making a living.

A FANTASTIC biz biography!

Here's the wonderful story of a man who set himself a goal--to live in the country--then figured out a way to earn a GREAT living to support that goal. Lyman Wood is (is he still alive?) a direct marketing/mail order pioneer who spent 60 years or so selling everything from $400 Roto Tillers to PRAYERS by mail. He also worked as an advertising and marketing consultant from his rural home. The stories in this book are inspiring AND instructional. This is a book filled with passion. It's not just biographical, it's "how-to." And best of all, it's FUN to read! I recommend it very highly to would-be entrepreneurs and to those frustrated entrepreneurs who occasionally need a "lift."

My daughters have always enjoyed the ludicrously hilarious tall tales of James Stevenson's "Grandpa",seen through the eyes of his two grand-children as a small boy with a moustache. In this story, Grandpa tells a tale of his own boyhood bedtime terrors, but lets the children supply the comforting explanations.

This story is great fun read on its own, or with the creepy sound effects and spooky narration supplied by the accompanying book tape. Weston Woods also did an entertaining video of this story about 15 years ago.

Four-to-eight-year-olds will enjoy this the most, but it has plenty of sly humour for the grown-ups as well. Don't miss other "Grandpa" stories, featuring Grandpa's pesky kid brother Wainey, at your public library. Very few seem available for sale anymore, unfortunately.

A good book about being afraid at night, something that most kids can relate to. As always, Grandpa has a story for Mary Ann and Louie. He tells how he was once afraid of all the frightening things he heard at night, but the kids identify the sounds as ordinary (not scary) things. This was the first book I read from the series of books about Mary Ann and Louie and Grandpa. It is also my favorite, and a favorite of my 4 year old son.

This book was the most enjoyed book by my children when they were small. We checked it out of the public library over and over again because my girls could not hear this story enought times. My daughter is about to leave for college and I want to get her a copy to remind her of the great times we had when sharing the story. She is 17 years old and to this day she says that that is the greatest book she ever read.

Like Bukowski, Annie makes you feel as if you're re-living actual events from the authors' life. Are we? Who knows. Very real, yet clever and qurky, witty and sexy! Annie's insights on human behavior are profound. She's got decades of psychological knowledge crammed into her 20-something mind. Maybe hosting a TV dating show gave her some of this wisdom. But these are very enjoyable, very funny perfectly short stories! Reminds me of Steve Martin's books.

Well, some of the characters were smart but all of them were amusing. I liked how the author managed to get the reader involved with these characters in such a short time. I also liked how the stories kind of had "relationship morals" at the end...without being preachy or anything.

Short and fun!

I liked how short her short stories were. I wouldn't have minded if some of them were longer though.I like how clever most of her characters are and I like how honest she is when it comes to relationships. I loved watching Annie Wood on her tv show, "BZZZ!" and that's why I bought the book. But, I'm glad I did. I passed it on to my sister and she's loving it too!

When the hustle and bustle of modern life has you totally frazzled reach for any of Jeanine McMullen's books and slow down. Her descriptions of life on a small farm in Wales are not only delightful but a real hoot. Who would have thought a horse named Doli could create such pandominium? And her little whippet, Merlin; you will never forget some of the stunts he pulls. The goat Little Nana (rebel that she is) is also always causing one sort of trouble after another. I just wish Jeanine had written more than three books about her life in Wales.

The marvelous sequel to "A Small Country Living", this book continues with the amusing and touching experiences of a BBC radio broadcaster's life on a tiny farm in the mountains of Wales. Her writing is wonderfully evocative, and her observations are most often funny or ironic. Think of "Under the Tuscan Sun" with looney livestock in place of the luscious food and lots more clouds and damp. Years later, Jeanine McMullen remains one of my all-time favorite writers. And if you love dogs, you'll especially enjoy her books--they're all keepers!!

A reverent examination of the artistic utilization of wood in classic cars. This book ventures beyond the American woodie, and includes the 1933 'Tulipwood' Hispano-Suiza, a 1926 Rolls Royce clad entirely in wood, Labourdette's skiffs and examples of fine woodworking in conventionally bodied vehicles. But I wish it was longer - the fine photography and extraordinary cars whetted my appetite for more.

Gary Paulsen is a writer we all know that. But there's another side of his life you might not have known. In his book Wood Song you will learn all about that other side.
Wood Song is a memoir about his experience in the wilderness. This story is creepy, funny, sad and thrilling. In this book Paulsen is also a part of the Iditarod Dog Sled Race a world-renowned event in Alaska.
Paulsen also tells stories about where he lives and what happens around there for example the banty hen "Hawk" that Paulsen owns that attacks everyone. There is also a section of the book dedicated to mysteries of the woods that Paulsen has come across for example when Paulsen sees a green glowing mist is it a ghost or Paulsen's imagination.
This book like many of Paulsen's books has vivid writing while I was reading it I felt like I was there. Nobody describes the wilderness like Gary Paulsen.
Personally I loved this book I think anyone who likes Gary Paulsen's books will love his book Wood Song. I recommend this book for kids ages 10-14. If you like reading about the wilderness this is the book for you.

After doing much searching and researching, I've found that this book, along with F. Olsen's "Kilns", is an excellent resouce for those of us who have spent much time working with kilns from a pedestrian level, but little time investigating the construction of them. Jack Troy's writing is clear and enjoyable and his knowledge obviously exhaustive. The first place to go if you are considering the merits of woodfired work.

"Wood-Fired Stoneware & Porcelain" is a great resource for potters interested in this alternative style of firing. The book contains substantial information on kiln design, clays, glazes, stacking, and firing wood kilns. Troy adds in details from his own considerable experience, and the photos and illustrations will make you anxious to get to the studio (or your local brick supplier...) The only drawback is that the majority of the photos are in b&w; however, the color plates that are included are great. A nice historical section, and lots of work by and info on contemporary potters. Most likely a good book to have on the shelf, and a great companion to his book on Salt-Glaze.

Simply retreat into this fantasy world where you will be placed onto a path of enlightenment, guaranteered to enhance the social and emotional intelligence of persons of all ages. I suggest that the reading of "Woods of Wisdom" is undertaken as a group project, which allows discussions between adults and children. I caution you not to read it too quickly, because you may miss many valuable insights.

A great book for anyone 14 to 94 or more, Woods of Wisdom parallels life. The journey of the fur creatures, through the woods and up the mountain, reminds me of the uphill struggles and obstacles we, as humans, experience. Through the interactions of the animals and the vinosaurs, I am reminded that I have a choice in how I respond to others. The entire book is full of simple wisdom - gems, nuggets, and stepping stones - for us to use along life's path to create a more meaningful life.

We are building a house and I am considering using a wood cook stove outside on the patio, to be used during the summer months, when the inside electric stove would heat up the house, so I bought this book as an introduction to using one.

This book covers a lot of ground, including new and used stoves, various types of wood for fuel, coal stoves, how to operate the stove, recipes, and a whole host of other topics. Now I can't wait to buy a stove and get 'cookin'.

When I first bought a house in the Blue Ridge Mountains I found that (being built in 1810) the most efficient and economical way to heat it was with wood. So although I didn't buy this book for the cooking aspects (which proved nice anyway), it was INDISPENSABLE for a beginning wood-burner. You get the low down on maintenance, safety, and a host of other must-have information. Should be required reading with every wood burning stove/heater purchase. Two thumbs up.

I bought this book in March 2000, right after we purchased a refurbished Elmira Sweetheart style wood cookstove. It is the perfect companion to using the woodstove for heating, cooking, or both. There are detailed descriptions of all the components of the stove, plus how to clean it and what type of wood to use for best results. It also has a bit of amusing history, and lots of tasty recipes. This is the only book you need for learning to use your wood cookstove efficiently.

After two failed marriages, 28-year-old Lauren Winters feels like a failure, in spite of a red-hot acting career in a string of blockbuster romantic comedies and an Academy Award nomination. Needing to get her head back on straight, she escapes to her birthplace of Winding River, Wyoming, to visit friends and family.

Almost the moment Lauren arrives back at her home ranch in Wyoming, she butts heads with arrogant horse wrangler, Wade Owens. Wade didn't grow up with Lauren, and not being a fan of romantic comedies, he has never heard of her as an actress. He just knows she's rich, an interloper in his domain, and assumes she's snooty as sin.

Though she finds herself brangling right and left with Wade, Lauren comes away from their sparring sessions more stimulated than upset. What a refreshing change to interact with someone who isn't in awe of her! And as things heat up between her and Wade, Lauren is even more delighted knowing that whatever Wade feels for her, it is for her alone, not for her fame and prestige. But even as she rejoices in her good fortune, Lauren knows that sooner or later she's going to have to confess to Wade who she really is.

This book is an excellent addition to an exciting romance series. There are lots of sparks and sharp repartee between the hero and heroine. The story has plenty of conflict and tension, but (which is something I personally prefer), remains light drama without too much angsting, and with frequent touches of humor. The sexual relationship between Wade and Lauren is highly emotional, which makes it very hot. Also, if you are a fan of stories set on a ranch, you will like the way the ranch in this book is very authentically drawn.

Lauren Winters is a Julia Roberts type actress who is too strong and successful for most men--until she meets Wade Owens. He's a horse rancher in her hometown in Wyoming who knows who he is and what he wants. And very soon after meeting her, he wants Lauren.

I love ranch stories and lean, sexy cowboys with great hands! I like Lauren, who has a good heart. It is a lot of fun to see a powerful woman like her find a man who is a good match for her. I am a big fan of Sherryl Woods, and this book has her trademark humor and hot sex. Try it out for a great time!

Sherryl Woods concludes this delightful miniseries, The Calamity Janes, with WRANGLING THE REDHEAD. Five friends share an enduring friendship, begun in high school, self-named for their penchant for broken hearts and troubles. Though their lives are widely divergent now, these women are still as close as sisters, despite their infrequent contact. Now with all her friends happily spoken for, Lauren Winters longs for the love and security her friends seem to share.

Following the ten year reunion of The Calamity Janes, Lauren grows increasingly disillusioned with the tinsel glamour of stardom, longing to be valued for herself rather than her looks and box office draw. Determined to earn her way, Lauren moves in with Grady and Karen Blackhawk, offering her skills with horses in exchange for room and board. For the first time, Lauren feels like she's where she belongs doing what she truly loves. And freedom from the camera frees her from the rigid self-control she's maintained for ten years.

Wrangler Wade Owens can't believe his eyes when he sees a woman he perceives to be a tenderfoot too close to the dangerous horse Midnight. Badly abused by a previous owner, Midnight doesn't allow anyone too close. Even when he realizes he's underestimates Lauren's skill with horses, Wade can't help thinking that she has "more sass than sense." Yet he finds her ability to take him by surprise intriguing. Although he suspects she still has ties to Los Angeles, Wade has no idea of Lauren's true identity.

Lauren enjoys Wade's gritty reality, as opposed the slick perfection that characterizes the men she knows from show business. She revels in the opportunity to be appreciated for her skills, and hesitates to reveal her Hollywood success or her hefty bank account, especially when she learns that Wade deeply despises the wealthy. Scars from the past prevent him from seeing past to the dollar signs to the potential goodness of those with wealth. But Lauren risks all to keep her identity a secret.

Sherryl Woods concludes The Calamity Janes miniseries with a fiery match in WRANGLING THE REDHEAD, a character driven romance with a marvelous cast. Wade doesn't fall into the trap of resenting a woman who earns more money than him; instead, he bears scars that leave a bitter memory of the damage that the privileged wealthy can inflict. Lauren knows she should come clean, but fears rejection, making her an endearing and sympathetic character. The Calamity Janes always hover in the background, fully prepared to meddle without ever inferring with the pace of the tale. After five installments, it saddens this reviewer to say goodbye to this marvelous cast of characters. With Wood's characteristic light-hearted touch, WRANGLING THE REDHEAD is a dazzling series finale, coming very highly recommended.
