Millennium Fruit Soups CookbookReview Date: 2000-06-14
After looking at some of the recipes I must admit are a few that pique my interest. For instance, The Fire and Ice Melon Soup. Watermelon, cantaloupe, zucchini, honey are all ingredients that one wouldn't first think of when making a soup. But this chilled soup blends these flavors to create a refreshingly good, versatile, and quick dish which can be served as an appetizer, light lunch, or even a dessert.
The book starts with a rundown on the ingredients used in the recipes. There are some exotic fruits used in some of the recipes so this is a nice touch. In addition to two stock recipes to be used as bases for some of the recipes, he also provides several ideas for easy to make croutons for use as a garnish.
Mr. Woods serves up over 90 recipe for fruit soups in his paperback book. Many are chilled soups that appear to be fast to assemble, perfect for summer when everyone is on the go. Who says soup is a cold weather dish? Not David Woods, and he proves it in this excellent, well laid out book.
A superb, one-of-a-kind cookbook for any dining occasion.Review Date: 2000-08-05

Funny, perceptive and highly entertaining!!Review Date: 2004-05-23
On the one hand, this is a tale of reinvention. It's a story about having (or having had) everything you wanted - and then still wanting to call a do-over.
On the other hand, it is hysterical. Sometimes it's hysterical in a laugh-out-loud sort of a way. Sometimes in a sneak-up-on-you-the-next-day-in-the-shower sort of a way. It is a biting, insightful look at pop culture through the lens of a one-time A-list Hollywood leading man who sees the opportunity to make himself relevant again - to himself and to the world, by dying. Sort of.
From the writer's
bio it seems that he has written a number of books with celebrities. And that inside feel really comes across when you read
this book. You have the feeling of getting into the mind and culture of someone who has lived his life under the watchful
eye of the media and his adoring public. There's a kind of Being John Malkovich thing going here - as the writer brings you
into the head of a Jack Nicholson kind of guy, and he's got the street cred and the chops to really pull it off. On the other
side of the story is this kind of hapless, deadbeat newspaper obit writer - and the vivid accounts of his life and perspective,
to often bitingly hilarious result.
I highly recommend this book.

Better than you think.Review Date: 2004-01-08
It includes alternative base classes, prestige classes, spells, monsters and a wealth of information about culture, history and religion of the major powers in the region. Does give a bit more space to the Israelites, but Egyptian, Babylonian and Cannite societies are all discussed in detail. A new tactical battle system is also introduced to run Biblical style wars. (aka. where the actions of a single hero or miracle will determine the course of the battle.)
Players need to be a little more mature than most d20 games to enjoy TESTAMENT. Not because the content is questionable. (although the discussion of Temple Prostitutes may cause snickering in some groups) There is a heavy emphasis on role playing in TESTAMENT. Protecting your tribe, surviving history and maintaining piety are very important concerns in the setting. If your players are looking for a `kill monsters and take their stuff' kind of game, than a lot of info in this book is going to go to waste.
Looking for an alternative to the LOTR/Conan/Magic Medieval setting? Try TESTAMENT. It's Better than you think.

The Fabulous, Forgotten Nature ManReview Date: 2008-02-04
Knowles was all of 43 years old when he went into the woods. He had been a sailor, trapper, and scout, but what he wanted to be was an artist. He had some untutored skill in painting, and was making sketches and paintings in Boston for a decade when he got the idea (perhaps in a dream) to go support himself in the woods. The _Boston Post_, always ready for a circulation gimmick, was ready to back him. "Can Knowles Live Two Months as a Cave Man?" came the headlines, and though the paper hyped the event, people were sincerely interested in the man-against-the-wilderness theme. Knowles was photographed and interviewed, and given a physical exam before trotting off to the woods in nothing but a g-string. When he emerged from the woods two months later, he had lost weight, but he was no longer naked, wearing birch sandals and the skin of a bear he had trapped and killed. He had caught the national spirit; he was viewed as a hero, awing crowds wherever he went. The bitter rival of the _Post_, the Hearst-owned _Boston Sunday American_, got onto the Knowles bandwagon by debunking it. Knowles, according to the revision, had spent two months in a log cabin with food (and even female companionship) delivered to him. Knowles had a couple of other wilderness trips, and then went on the lecture circuit and wrote a back-to-nature book about his experiences as the "Nature Man". The last third of _Naked in the Woods_ has mostly to do with his painting career; he did commissioned murals and small-scale calendar art.
Knowles died in 1942. His artwork is still collected by some, and the Ilwaco Heritage Museum had a retrospective last year. We still have the Nature Man with us, in the form of "Survivor"-type television shows. Going wilderness is the show for Bear Grylls, who has starred in the British program _Man vs. Wild_, and who last year underwent a Knowles-type debunking for spending his nights in cozy hotels rather than in the wild where he was assumed to be keeping himself. Motavalli has a wonderful time with this story, and presents it in all its humorous aspects, but finds something serious in what Knowles had to tell us then and now: "He may have been at least partly a fraud, but he was nonetheless successful in communicating a powerful and useful message to an anxiety-stricken age."

A Great Collection of Mind TwistersReview Date: 2000-03-16
(a) Easy to understand and look easy to solve.
(b) Difficult to solve.
(c) In reality, easy to solve and the solutions are easy to understand.
All of the puzzles contained in this book, many of which have been in existence in some form for many years, fit the mold defined above. Detailed instructions on how to construct them as well as solutions are included. While most require only standard materials, such skills as wood and metal working are sometimes necessary.
It is easy to feel like an imbecile when you are unsuccessful in solving some of these items and then in desperation go to the solutions and see how simple it is. In many cases, the secret is to abandon the "obvious" approach and look at the problem sideways. The path that first appears least likely to lead to a solution is often the proper one. If you enjoy puzzles, this book is a necessary purchase.
