A little Mouse, aloft in his balloon, sees an ominous shadow approaching the country of his people! Fleeing homeward, he cries warning to every Mouse he meets: "Here comes the Cat! Ciuda idyot Kot!" Soon the alarm is being passed from one to the other, until the entire Mouse population awaits in dread the arrival of the Cat. What will happen when Mice and Cat come face to face? Something quite unexpected! Significantly, this lovely little book is the creation of two authors, one American and the other Russian. After meeting in 1986 at a Soviet/American childrens' book symposium, they decided to collaborate on a tale with a message of harmonious coexistence. Vladimir Vagin's exquisite, highly-detailed, colorful paintings must be seen to be appreciated. And Frank Asch's story of fear and friendship will warm the hearts of adults and children lucky enough to read "Here Comes the Cat!"

Here Comes the Cat is an exciting collaboration between an American writer and a Russian illustrator. Both Frank Asch and Vladimir Vagin play their parts distinctively. The story is filled with suspense, exciting action, and a thought-provoking reversal. The mice characters, representing humans of many ethnicities, react to the news of an approaching cat. The words, found in text balloons, repeat the exclamation, "Here comes the cat!" Yet in every case, we find them in both English and Russian. Signs on stores, also in both languages, offer a wider variety of reading opportunities. The book introduces first-grade readers to the concept of translation. All the visual elements of the book, from the calligraphic text to the full-page illustrations, have a strong and authentic Russian style. The art is excellent.

I wasn't thirlled when I was given this book as a present - but as soon as I read the first lively biography, I became a fan of this well-written, sprightly collection of biographies of the colorful, eccentric characters who people Colorado's history. This book adds a well-researched human touch to the history of the west, and anyone who loves that history will be captivated by it.

I thoroughly enjoyed Here Lies Colorado. It gave entertaining insight into some really colorful characters and the times in which they lived. The author writes well about his subjects who are wide-ranging. I'd read about a few people and then say to myself, "Okay, just one more"....again and again and again! Needless to say, I finished the book too quickly.

Moral ambiguity

Review Date: 2005-09-14
Response to Hitchcock's movies is a felt response. Hitchcock is a popular artist and, for that matter, Shakespeare was a popular artist. What an artist says about his work only has indirect relevance. French criticism of Hitchcock plays down the suspense and humor in his movies. The result is over-simlplification. There is a disturbing quality in many of Hitchcock's films. A function of art is to disturb. Suspense in Hitchcock has a characteristic moral quality.

REBECCA was Hitchcock's first Hollywood film. In LIFEBOAT there is a typical Hitchcock counterpoint of despair and optimism. ROPE was filmed in ten minute takes in a single apartment. It has unbroken continuity in terms of time and regard. There is attractiveness and danger in connivance at common guilt in STRANGERS ON A TRAIN. REAR WINDOW is perhaps the first masterpiece of Alfred Hitchcock.

In late Hitchcock the viewers' reponses are controlled and organized. REAR WINDOW is Hitchcock's attempt to imprison viewers. VERTIGO is superior to its poor book. A zoom-in shot of Scottie's accident gives the spectator a sense of vertigo. Psychologists have explained that tension arises from a desire to fall and a dread of falling. Robin Wood feels that VERTIGO is the Hitchcock film nearest to perfection.

In contrast to James Bond films, Hitchcock films have depth, charm, integrity. NORTH BY NORTHWEST is a condensed version of NOTORIOUS. Mount Rushmore is dramatic rather than symbolic. PSYCHO is full of parent-child references. THE BIRDS is described as an ornithological ON THE BEACH.

In MARNIE concerns evident in Hitchcock's late work become fused. TORN CURTAIN is disappointing as Htichcock's 50th film. It is episodic. Hitchcock, though, fills that movie with his sense of the necessary moral impurity of action in an imperfect world. This is an excellent guide to Alfred Hitchcock's film career. There is a filmography at the end of the book.

Robin Wood is the Preeminent Authority

Robin Wood is the Preeminent Authority on Hitchcock. Robin Wood is without question the greatest authority on the cinematic works of Sir Alfred Hitchcock. Years ago after seeing many films as I was growing up I decided to do some reading on the role of the Director. By pure chance I picked up and purchased Robin Wood's original edition of this book. Obviously it was at that time, myself still being in school very challenging reading for me. However, I was able to recognize brilliance over hypocrisy. Robin Wood has ever since remained the preeminent authority on Hitchcock's films. He has honestly admitted that his perspectives on some of his analysis have changed. This is not an outright statement that has had a change of heart or acquired a new taste in the aesthetics of Hitchcock's films. On the contrary, through ongoing analysis he has come even closer to the secret of Hitchcock's mastery of his art. An artist creates a work. A great portion of that work is constructed with conscious deliberate thought, some is intuitive and a small portion may be subconscious. Robin Wood, I believe has showed a continuum in his analysis of Hitchcock's work. Wood continues to explore the avenues of the intuitive and subconscious nature of Alfred Hitchcock, which manifests itself in his films. To this end I believe Wood has devoted a good portion of his life. The methods of the great pioneers have often puzzled conventional minds. I am not a great pioneer. I am puzzled. And what the heck does conventional mean? Happy reading!

This book was given to me by my mother-in-law who used to read it to my husband when he was a small child. I have never had so much fun with a book while reading it to kids. "AHA!" They love to read it with you. It warms your heart and creates some unforgettable memories as you learn why children's version of why the hippo lives in water. I highly suggest to every parent with a boy or girl. It's wonderful.

This book, with its vivid and whimsical watercolors and delightful tone, is a fun and rewarding read-aloud book to share with any child. Hippo's gentle and happy personality captures small children's attention, while the all-powerful Ngai -- "god of Everything and Everywhere -- gives them a delicious shiver up their spine. I have read this book aloud for children uncountable times and have yet to see it fail to please. It should be back in print! So, if you can get your hands on a copy, enjoy.

This book is a resource on innovations in human rights that are presently sweeping the globe. In the midst of war, terrorism, torture, and other violations of civil and political rights, the book fouces squarely on the economic and social rights abuses that provide the context for other kinds of violations. It addresses issues - from the right to housing and food to the right to basic health care and public education. It also discusses the conflict between dictates of culture and religion and notions of equlaity and non-discrimination. This is an excellent book for university classes (both undergrad and post-grad) and for general readership as well.

Human Rights and the Global Economy

Review Date: 2006-08-04
Human Rights and the Global Marketplace by Woods and Lewis is the work of human rights pioneers. There is a scarcity of serious human rights scholarship that addresses the relationship between the human rights corpus and the world of capital, in effect, the single global market that is the work of the GATT/WTO. This excellent textbook admirably fills that gap, and provides both students and teachers alike with a solid foundation on which to develop an understanding and a critique of power relationships in a geopolitical sense. The book also says to the world that human rights are not just about state despotism. In fact, that is just one half of the equation. Properly understood, human rights are about power and powerlessness, and the struggle to develop a normative and practical framework upon which the contest for human liberation must be waged. Woods and Lewis unravel these questions and present the academy with a pioneering challenge -- to expand the discourse of human rights from its narrow, traditionalist, liberal confines. They ask that we think more robustly about the most pressing challenges today: how do we understand globalization and its effects on poverty and powerlessness. This is a most welcome contribution that is likely to transform the way we teach human rights.

Brilliant treatise on global economy's impact on human rights.

Hope Lewis and Jeanne Woods have done students, teachers, and human rights activists a tremendous service. The book brings together issues as diverse as racial discrimination, culture and women's rights, and the impact of trade agreements on HIV AIDS. It changes the focus of traditional human rights courses from only civil and political violations to economic and social violations that are important under globalization. This is a must buy for anyone interested in contemporary humnan rights. Well worth the investment!

I liked this book on many different levels. The main reason was that it was easy to read and it flowed well. I do not read fast but still read it in five days. I loved the way he shares his experience through a story line. You can almost visualize the setup of the gobbler he is hunting. I feel as a novice turkey hunter that the things I picked up from this book will help me on the hunt. Even as I improve and learn I do not feel I will outgrow the entertainment value of this book. I will pick this book back up in a year and read it right before the season again without hesitation. Great Writer. Great Read.

I enjoyed reading this book because it taught me some lessons for hunting the wild turkey and it was entertaining. Mr Robinson gave some pointers on hunting the bird as well as telling some entertaining stories. I like to learn this way. Rather than have someone tell me how to do things I like it when the lesson is demonstrated in an actual hunt. I would recommend this book for these reasons.

The ultimate in cut and paste.

All you have to do is choose, cut, paste and edit.

OK, it is more than that, but this book gets you to third base. It is only a short run to home plate afterwords.

Master plumbers often find that a portion of their business derives from fixing jobs that homeowners thought were simple enough to do themselves. Many business professionals approach information security policies the same way novices approach a leaky pipe. They try to save time and money by doing it themselves; then they are overwhelmed by the unexpected complexity of the task. In the end, they have to call on a professional to repair the damage; ultimately costing them more time and money than if they had gone the professional route at the start.

Those who are serious about information security policy should plumb the depth of wisdom contained in Information Security Policies Made Easy, Version 9. This latest version has updated the text of nearly 1,400 policies, and the policies are organized to track ISO 17799, a broad information-security standard.

This newest version rectifies the only serious shortcoming of versions past: the lack of a cross-referencing tool. Version 9 contains a Web-based CD-ROM that is fully linked and searchable. Other advances include policies addressing new legislation such as the Healthcare Insurance Portability and Accountability Act and the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act. With this update, the flow of information through any company's pipelines is sure to be more secure.

Anyone who is chartered with the creation of a set of a comprehensive set of information security policies and procedures should definitely use Information Security Policies Made Easy. It is the definitive reference and definitely lives up to its billing.

I keep books in two places, a small shelf near my computer that I can reach and a large bookshelf across the room. This book deserves a place on the small shelf within arm's reach.

If you are a manager, before you ever make a decision, or approve a policy, look the topic up, there is a good chance you will see something you didn't think of.

Let me give you an example, our company used to have a fairly long Non-Diclosure Agreement (NDA) prepared by our attorney for a specific purpose. However, we decided to create a simpler, general purpose NDA for all 1099 contractors. The lawyer created it and before I approved it I checked it against the book. I found three items that really should have been in our NDA that we would have missed, thank you Mr. Wood!

If you are a techie do you need this book? Sure, because everything we do as a techie or engineer has liability implications for the company. Each topic is very clear, concise, and well thought out. It takes a few seconds to look it up, about two minutes to read the section and that investment is well worth your time.

Yes, this is an expensive book, however, it is worth the investment, every organization should have at least one copy. S.

The author has a way of transferring her profound love of and respect for nature while also motivating the reader toward more active participation in the things that matter most - the spiritual nature, welfare, and beauty of all life. Anyone who studies or simply enjoys photography will benefit from seeing the photos, each a work of art.

I've just had a lovely visit with the flora, fauna and soul of the Northwoods of Wisconsin. I did not have to travel from my Pennsylvania home to do so. I only had to open this little jewel of a book and spend time with the very real and yet magical photos taken by the author, Trish Kirk, and read the inspirational quotes she chose to accompany them. This book is a perfect gift for those of us who respect "all God's creatures, great and small" and enjoy the beauty of nature in general. If I ever get to Wisconsin, this book will be how I share the experience with others.
