My boys are 5 and 3 and I have been looking for a "regular" book to read to them when I came across this on Amazon. My boys find Harry Potter scary at this point. Every night, we read a bit more and they can't wait to see what happens with Trevor and his friends. I have started reading ahead b/c once I am done reading to them, I want to see what happens next. Great read!!

I really enjoyed reading this book. It is full of suspense, adventurous, imaginative, and the plot is original. The story moved fast and I kept me interested until the end. One of the author's strengths in writing is in his descriptions. I could clearly see in my mind's eye the places, sights, and sounds of the book as well as I could visualize the characters as I read. This book is a great read for young teens; especially boys. I highly recommend it for readers who like adventure, mysteries, and technology.

I read a lot of children's fiction. This is one of the top five children's books I've read all year.

The villains are believable. The excitement is real. The personalities of the protagonists are three-dimensional.

This book takes me back to the Danny Dunn books of my childhood. A great read for young teens and preteens.

Great adventure book for kids!

The Strange Town series kicks off with this fun first volume entitled "The Woods Behind Trevor Malone's House". It follows a young inquisitive trio of best friends through an amazing adventure that occurs in their small strange town. There's a lot of mystery and adventure, balanced with humor. It's a fast page turner with general heaps of excitement, that's great for the imagination. Can't wait to see the next book in the series.

This book Focuses on the power structure of the nazi party. It doesn't reveal much about personalities or everyday life, but describes the interrelation between the beauracrats, industrialists, land owners, populace, and nazi party members. It is appropriate for anyone interested in political structures and how they are held together. It gives a fascinating look into the accumulation of power into one charismatic leader and the appointed henchmen/disciples who would literrally do anything to please the whims of their demigod, and thus gain more power for themselves, And how this monopolistic and 'anarchic' power structure ultimately led to such a terribly disfunctional outcome.

Excellent study by the best Hitler biographer

Ian Kershaw is the premier historian on Hitler and Nazi Germany and this book from the Profiles in Power series is an excellent study on the roots, success, and ultimate destruction of the "Fuehrercult." Two schools of thought are used by historians to understand the power of Nazism. "Intentionalists" see the Nazi regime as the embodiment of Hitler as the totalitarian leader. "Structuralists," however, believe the policies and, ultimately, the crimes of Nazi Germany were stumbled upon by underlings working under a loose framework rather than a deliberate program. As one would expect, Kershaw takes from both these theories to develop his comprehensive profile.

Kershaw examines Hitler's worldview of racial struggle, anti-Semitism, and living space for the German empire--how these ideas developed (Hitler's background) and how Hitler used them to create his leadership image. This Fuehrercult unified a fractional party, helped repress opposition, and created a mass following. Through Hitler's charismatic leadership the German people would be prepared to fight the Nazi fight (inevitably WWII). Kershaw also looks at the feudal-like power relations inside the Third Reich; a regime of open-ended decrees that left no "smoking gun" pointing at Hitler for the Final Solution. Finally, Kershaw examines the destruction of Hitler's power during which the irrational optimism that "Providence" (i.e. Hitler's will) would prevail was still believed by many (particularly the 'court' of Hitler's bunker). I recommend this book especially to advanced history students who want an in-depth examination of Hitler's power in a compact 230-page book. The book includes footnotes, an index, a chapter on further readings, and a chronology of events.

Unique investigation of Hitler and his rise to power.

It is not your typical biography of Hitler. It is a thorough examination and analysis of Hitler's rise to power. It examines how he got power, how he maintained power, how he used power, and, finally, how he lost power. Quite an interesting book. Be sure to check out other books in this "Profiles in Power" series.

I had this book as a child and thought I would never again set eyes on these wonderful illustrations by Beatrix Potter. I didn't even know the title of the book, only remember an untidy "lady mouse" character in the story named Hunka Munka. My husband suprised me with this book as an adult and seeing those beautiful illustrations swept me directly back to my childhood. I realised that I had never read the story, I had memorized the illustrations at an age before I could read.

This is a fabulous little book and the illustrations are so magical that they may stay embedded in a child's memory until adulthood. That's what happened for me and to this day, I treasure this book.

When I was a girl, my mother read this book to me over and again. I remember begging her to read it to me, and when I was old enough reading it myself. I thoroughly enjoyed the characters, including the "Two bad mice", and as in all Beatrix Potter books it is well written and a lesson is well learned. I am looking forward to reading this book to my own children (which is why I am on Amazon.com looking for it).

I first read this book many years ago. A vivid picture of rural India in transit between the old and the new is drawn in words when a young Western woman traveller is taken into the group due to an accident outside her, or their, control.
This book will hold the attention of any reader with even the most superficial interest in India, and will bring back memories of those readers more familiar with the environment she finds herself in. Well recommended for anyone!

Third Class Ticket details a journey around India by a group from a poor rural, and tradition-bound, village. Although a supposedly factual account, this book reads like a novel and the reader becomes emotionally involved with the characters as they discard old village prejudices and have their eyes opened by the diversity of their own country. Heather Wood tells the story with a wonderful combination of humility and compassion.

For anyone with the slightest interest in India (or in people!), this book is required reading; its only drawback is that it doesn't go on for much longer than it does.

Being an Indian and having travelled a bit into the rural India, I have always been fascinated by the energy and enthusiasm of the rural Indian. The average urban Indian is bored, boring and nervous, but the average rural Indian is cheerful and full of energy as you can read from this book.

Indira Gandhi once said "India lives in its villages !". Though she was obviously eyeing the huge vote banks of the rural India, what she said is a fact indeed. :-)

I had heard about this book years ago and have been looking around for it ever since. I was surprised when I found it on... I did enjoy reading it, though I couldn't help noticing that the story flows rather abruptly at times and rather slowly at other times. Still I must say, Heather Wood has done a wonderful job. Sometimes it looks like she gets a little carried away with her characters.

A Refreshing New Writer!

Review Date: 2004-06-22
Through My Eyes is a welcome voice from a refreshing new writer! Barbara Williamson Wood has written of her observations and personal experiences in a style that reflects both her Native American heritage and strong Christian faith.

In The Tear Of A Man she helps us see how we often create our own sorrow by cursing the blessings of what we receive from Creator. Told in Native narrative style, she speaks plainly yet we can clearly see the imagery. With cleverness akin to O. Henry, we see how the man has created his own pain (tears) by infusing his life with hatred. But, this is a tale of redemption and well told it is.

Ms. Williamson-Woods is not a writer of supposition. She writes from the heartbreak of her own life. Her true account of learning that her daughter has HIV is recalled as only a mother can. She recounts her own pain, how she hoped she could be of enough strength to emotionally support her daughter and how this experience inspired her to learn as much as she could of this disease. She is now an advocates for people who, like her daughter, are being treated for HIV. She shares her tearful story of the promise she made to her husband. She promised she would never leave him but help him meet God when it was time for him to leave her. This experience is retold in a spiritually comforting and honest style that enables us to see the difference faith and an honored promise can make.

The beauty of this book lies, however, in its diversity. For every Native styled tale and painfully true story, there are stories of humor to remind us that life also has its moments to be laughed at-even if we have to laugh at ourselves! In Rodeo Mom, she shows us that a horse can get the best of the best of riders and in Chicken Babies how jokes are BI-lingual!!!!

As a poet myself, I could not omit the brilliant poetry contained within this range of emotion book. The poetry is wonderfully clear, using poetic styles that any reader can appreciate as well as effectively conveying the very thoughtfulness within each poem to the reader. I found myself pausing after each poem to savor the message and the beautiful usage of language.

This book is a must read! This is a book that can be taken out from time to time so that when we need reassurance, Ms. Williamson-Wood can remind us that we are not alone.

"Through my Eyes" is a refreshingly simple book. With the use of words, the author paints well her scenery. I enjoyed the stories, and some touched my heart, especially "Come Cry with Me", the author's tribute to her daughter who is HIV positive.

I appreciated this young woman's straightforward approach to what can be a delicate subject. She didn't present herself as a total victim, but took some responsibility for choices she might have made differently. She did not see herself as defined or limited by her illness, but bravely accecpted the challenge of overcoming the difficulties presented by it. Her faith was part of the process, but she does not rub your face in it. A nice success story.

Some Christians believe our spiritual relationship with Him is enough to overcome depression. Some believe that He uses others' experience and medication advances to help as well. I believe the later. This young gal does a great job appreciating what depression is for it is an enemy she battles. Her preciousness shows through her battle. Her sharing encourages the rest of us in the same battle. Out of her weakness she has opportunity to show her strength. Her chuckles are sweet.

Joanna Swinney, who has struggled for many years with depression and has now emerged from it, shares her experience and her suggestions of what might help (and has helped her) with her readers, who may either be suffering from the same affliction or who may be involved with a sufferer and are looking for ways to cope and to help. It is a book of great courage, and, for someone aged 28 when the book was published, unusual wisdom. I cannot myself share Joanna's deep religious belief, but I can understand how her beliefs and the community of fellow-believers will have contributed to her healing, and even for a non-religious reader there is so much here that is inspiring, helpful and practical. There are many things she tells us about helpful relationships and strategies, as well as sensible things about therapy and medication. And she writes wonderfully clearly and vividly. An inspiring book.

A helpful look at the subject of depression

Review Date: 2007-01-29
Joanna Swinney's book is a comprehensive look at depression, how it affects the sufferer and those around them. She describes what depression can feel like and how support from people can make a significant difference. She discusses talk therapy and medication as well as some things that people can do themselves to help when they are depressed.

The book is written from a Christian perspective and she talks about a lot of benefits that the church and Christians can bring, as well as some of the difficulties that Christians may have, particularly with regard to suicide. This is an informative and excellent book which should be helpful for people dealing with this subject and which, although not unrealistically positive about the outlook, is an encouraging read.

What a wonderful humorous book! The book takes you along the road with a few show dogs that are making their way to Westminster 2001. As you read you get to know the trials and worries of the dogs and mostly their owners and handlers. I was actually cheering for a few dogs especially Shower, Fanny and J.R.!

Besides the wonderful stories of the dogs you also get a scoop on the crazy world of dog shows in general. I even learned a few tidbits along the way i.e. the Westminster Kennel Club is only for men who are generally wealthy and white.

If you want an interesting read about dogs and dog shows then this is the book for you.

Interesting, well-paced examination of the dog show world, spotlighting the best-known show in the US. I liked the author's focus on several "top dogs" from the 2001 show -- I really got involved in their stories, and appreciated the updates at the end (love Henry the Field Spaniel!).

The book is basic enough to explain the intricacies of showing to novices, yet manages to still be interesting to those involved in showing. I recommend this book highly -- hope this author writes more on the subject!

Deborah Wood's *Top Dogs* is a great read for anyone who has ever been intrigued by the mystique of Westminster...experienced dog person or interested channel surfer...I came to love the dogs, owners and handlers whose journey to Westminster Wood chronicles, because she deftly captures the soul of each one.

Wood obviously LOVES and knows dogs and respects the tradition of Westminster...but her keen, and often iconoclastic, humor also gives us a knowing and warm wink at the eccentric, passionate world of dog shows.

She's the one you want to go to the Garden with...she's funny, wise and generous.

This is an excellent book in advanced C programming methods.

Review Date: 1999-01-08
This is an excellent book in advanced C programming techniques. Although it is an advanced text, the author explains each method in detail and strengthens understanding of key elements in C programming. A number of weaknesses prevent this book from rating 5 stars: the last chapter is number 9 (which makes it harder to use in a 16 week semester), the second chapter is really about four chapters (structures, pointers, linked lists, other topics), the chapter length ranges from 4 pages (chap 1) to 82 pages (chap 2), and it hasn't been updated since 1991. This book is relatively easy to read, but sometimes runs into awkward sentences. The awkward sentences can be directly attributed to required nomenclature (returns...returns...returns...) which can leave the reader wondering if returning to that sentence will improve understanding of the concept. The examples and exercises are wonderful. The examples build a base of programs that should be useful to every programmer. The examples also show the differences in methods achieving the same result and explain the reasoning behind methods that are better (fewer clocks, more efficient use of memory, etc.). I really enjoyed reading this book and wish an updated edition was available, which led me to this website and book review.

1. Pointers to pointers, arrays of pointers, pointers to structs, and function pointers are all covered better then anyone.

2. Dude Unix system calls and process control made easy. Great for OS classes.

Even now in 2003 this remains my favorite code book of all time. A great writer.
