The images on the site of the illustrations don't come close to the actual quality of the artwork.

This book gives children something that is not only wonderful to look at, but relates to a real-world event about conserving our natural resources.

Good for bird lovers and young children!

We bought this book at a birding festival recently. It is now my 4 year old daughter's favorite book. The pictures are beautiful and the rhyme is very engaging. Our very favorite part is the last page where my daughter exclaims "But it isn't really extinct any more". What a happy ending for a truly magnificent bird.

This book captures the spirit of the quest for the ivory-billed woodpecker: the hope, the faith, the love of nature. It delighted my daughter with its stunning art depicting the Big Woods of eastern Arkansas, catchy rhythm, beautiful descriptions, and especially its teasing way of letting the reader catch glimpses of this bird, until quite recently considered extinct, while the bird seeker in the story looks the other way. The author is truly the one to write such a book, married as she is to David Luneau, the scientist who finally caught the woodpecker on tape, putting the entire team of skilled ivory bill searchers center stage in the news April 2005. I especially liked the fascinating notes and gorgeous photos in the end pages, and think they could easily be developed into a second book for older children!

I enjoyed the book immensely. Mrs. Reese and Mr. Miller are imaginative story-weavers with a flare for the unusual. Mrs. Reese truly has a gift for captivating descriptions and Mr. Miller for engaging plot twists. If this dynamic duo were ever to co-author a solid novel or even epic series, I wouldn't hesitate an instant to rush to the bookstore (hint, hint)! Their strengths would complement each other well. Specifically, my favorites for each are "In the Air Tonight "by Mr. Miller and "The Thaw" by Mrs. Reese. In both cases I found myself yearning for more; I felt a need for a more robust story and conclusion not possible in the short-story format. Both, I believe, are excellent story-boards for a complete flesh-out in a novel format and both could be contenders for the big best-sellers lists. Thanks to both the authors for providing me an opportunity to share your musings!

John and Rachelle's book captures many aspects of several different lives, ranging from futuristic game players to a woman who can't remember her past. The details create an illicit picture in one's mind. You can tell that the team has put their hearts and souls into creating something that is a joy to read. They held nothing back, and shared intimate details from their minds with the world. An excellent colllection of short stories.

Organic Imagination

Review Date: 2007-08-12
"Bones of the Woods" uses rich, organic sensory descriptions. Rachelle's imaginative stories use nature, which is as strong of an element as the characters or the plot. Nature enables the characters and the reader to make sense of a world without order. Rachelle's first story "Bones of the Forest" has a character that discovers a frightening episode in humankind's history. Her final story "The Thaw" has a character who must face a buried past in order to stop a predator/murderer. Sandwiched between these stories is the exquisite "The Leafman." In this story, Rachelle's descriptions are so evocotive and true, both of art and of nature. Equally rich in images and symbolism, John Miller's stories are insights into the torturous battles as men fight the dark side of their nature - a hit man, a psychiatrist, and a gamer. As I read through this collection, I didn't want any story to end. This wife-and-husband writing team have created a set of stories that compliment each other, engage the reader, and remind us that men and women can only survive when they live in harmony with nature. It is ironic that these two live on a Missouri farm, because they are highly technical people. Rachelle Reese is the co-author of Professional SQL Server 7.0 Development Using SQL-DMO, SQL-NS & DTS. How fortunate it is to read good writing in a world that is too easily amused and distracted by technology. The power of the word to stimulate mind and spirit can be found in "Bones of the Woods."

Face it, a good finish on the brightwork of the boat is a lot of work. Rebecca shows you how to do it right and get the maximum life out of a beautiful finish. For example, many people unknowingly shorten the life of a good varnish by excessive thinning. She explains how and when to thin to avoid degrading the protective properties of the varnish.

A good varnish job is an art as well as a science, she shows both.

I have owned the Brightwork book for many years and always find myself checking back with it when I do a project. I bought this book as an update for the original but have found it invaluable as an adjunct to the original text. This is the perfect reference to have aboard or in the shop with you while you are doing the project. It effectivly updates the original text in a couple of critical areas and I highly recommend it. Thanks to these two books, no one need fear varnishing again! It is gospel!

The best book I have found on the restoration of the traditional log home. Book shows how to restore log homes to their original appearance and even covers such issues as stonework, adding a frame addition that harmonizes with old logs, and the replacement of damaged or unuseable logs. There are a couple of shortcommings: For a book that has the word "Building" (verb)in the title, there is scanty information on the construction of roofs, and almost nothing is said about plumbing or wiring. McRaven is a purist (will not use asphalt shingles on a log home) and clearly has the knowledge,- but I came away feeling a little like the book could have gone further. Still very good in many respects. Highly recommended.

This is critical book in the collection any builder/restorer should have close at hand. The knowledge McRaven shares from his vast experience is a standout among the limited sources available to the restorer. While I am using several sources for my restoration project, I have referred to this one most.

After stumbling upon a tattered copy of the earlier version of this book (now out of print) in the local library, I can only say that I called Mcraven several times LD from Germany in 1993 to check on the publish date of the revised edition. Really an excellent book- essential for the shelf of anyone with an interest in the authentic square-hewn type of cabin.

The author also provides helpful suggestions throughout the book. Preservationists, historic resource surveyors as well as people interested in living in a log house will all gain from the content of the book.

What a lot of people don`t know is that Paul Bunyan had a wife and two kids .His wife`s name is Carrie and their kids are Little Jean, the boy, and Tenny, the girl. The Bunyans have lots of adventures . They make a lot of landmarks along the way like the Big Sur and the Rocky Mountains. I love the book. I like the book because they keep on making landmarks. I also like how the pictures show proportion.

It's a short book...great to read to kids.

Just when you thought you'd heard it all about Paul Bunyan you find out about the accomplishments of his wife and children. For example: you've heard of Mammoth cave? Well.......... And what about when the kids are grown and Paul can retire??

And please. Don't look at the last page until you've read the whole book especially if you're interested in astronomy.

This is a great field guide to all the creatures you might encounter on a canoe trip in the North Woods. It is very succinct, yet written in an interesting prose, with about 2 to 3 pages dedicated to each animal, fish, or insect it describes. We consider it an essential part of the gear we take on all our canoe trips up North. You will not be disappointed in this book. Great for all ages.

An excellent overview of wildlife of the Northern Minnesota area. There are interesting and informative descriptions of everything from birds to insects to fish. The scope of the book is so broad that only a few of each type of creature can be listed, but he has chosen the ones, such as loons, herons, and otters, that are so special to the North woods. Highly recommended.

Review Date: 2008-07-03
Care for Creation addresses "the ecological devastation of our time" in terms of environmental science, Franciscan spirituality, and reflective action. Though environmental problems seem overwhelming, the authors write, personal and cultural transformation are possible through knowledge, prayer, and faith formation. The knowledge component is presented by Warner, a lecturer and researcher in environmental studies. His chapters are filled with definitions, explanations, and examples that help even novices grasp the current situation and implications for the future. The prayer and spirituality component is provided by Delio, a professor of spirituality studies and author of several books on Franciscan spirituality. Her chapters in Care for Creation deal with ecological topics in view of Franciscan theology, drawing on the life of Francis, the writings of Clare, and the theology of Bonaventure. Reflective action chapters are the work of Wood, an art therapist, spiritual director, and retreat leader. She offers guided meditations, prayers, and practical steps for individuals, small groups, and organizations. Two appendixes contain guidelines for engaging in reflective action and preparing for guided prayer experiences. Another gives the formula for calculating individual carbon emissions. Chapter notes, a resource list, and an index are included.

This is a solid, comprehensive work of immense value to individuals, faith-sharing groups, and institutions wishing to better understand today's ecological issues and work toward a "right relationship" with Creation.

I got a lot of enjoyment out of carving this character. Mr. Stetson's
instructions and the step-by-step photos are easy to follow and you will be proud of the result. One caution: Mr. Stetson's old man has an over-the-horizon fixed stare that doesn't look natural. And so did my copy. Use care when you set the head. I made mine a fly-swatter to carry and now he seems to have a reason for staring at the ceiling!

I have most if not all of the caricature carving books and in my opinion this is one of the two best. Highly recommended.

Dave Stetson is probably one of the top caricature carvers in the nation. He views the world around him in a unique way. His approach to teaching woodcarving stems from a desire to teach the student beyond the project, to enable the student to be more creative and carve on his own. This book allows the student to do that. The explanations are concise, with step by step photos and explanations. The photo gallery has a wonderfully diverse subject matter. And Dave's style of teaching is loaded with humor. It's a great addition to my woodcarving book library.

If you have no other book about carousels, this is the one to have. Not only does the book illuminate the history of carousels, dispelling some common myths along the way, but the step-by-step, well illustrated process of carving a carousel is clearly explained in easy to understand terms. As Bruce's identical twin brother I can attest to the heart, mind and artistry that goes into every one of Bruce's creations. Many years ago I received a call from Bruce and he pleaded for my help. I replied that I had no knowledge or skill. Bruce persisted and taught me how to carve carousels using the same steps and techniques described in this book - several of the carousels I have carved are pictured in this book. Perhaps one of your creations will be in his next book!

Bruce encourages you to set your imagination free. Also, there is a step by step structure showing Bruce's one of a kind process. Even if you don't carve or don't want to start, it is still enlightening to see how this present day master carver makes lovely masterpieces for carousels and living rooms.

This book includes the plans for many horses and there aren't a lot of separate parts per each horse, which is good. He handles all you need to know in a basic, down to earth manner including wood grain, finishing, etc. He's carved over 1,000 horses so I guess he knows what he's talking about. I hope he puts out other books about different carving styles of carousel horses (especially Mullers) in the future.
