This book inspired me to start carving again. The history in the book as well as the great pictures of works by the masters of this style including Harley Refsal made this not only an interesting read but also an excellent how to guide.

Is it REALLY helpful?

Anyone who wants to try their hand at figure carving...get this book!. It has a few pages giving a background behind this style of carving, but has an EXCELLENT step by step project in the back. I thought I could never do it; all the figures I have seen looked like it took someone years to learn the trade. This may be so but I was able to finish my first figure over about 3-4 days and everyone is astonished at what I have done. Seriously, this book is one of the best Ive seen. Its a "must-have".

Follow the steps and you can do it!!

I have long wanted to learn how to carve, and jealously watched a friend develop this talent. He recommended this book to me. A weekend's worth of following the instructions in the book produced three carvings each a little better than the other. This instructive book also mixes the history of Scandinavian Carving along with rich color pictures of completed carvings. Take your wood working to another level. You to can create a masterpiece.

Harley's book leads off by providing a history of Norwegian wood carving, he then provides a large number of examples that represent not only his work but also the work of many leading artists in this field of wood carving. Harley then provides a step by step, easy to follow, lesson on carving Oskar with over 80 pictures. The final section of the book is a large number of patterns that can be used to carve some of the characters highlighted in the many high quality pictures included in the book. This book will become one of the most used books in my collection of wood carving books.

There is a lot of info in this book for the experts, too. I am usually very leery when the word "Complete" appears anywhere in a book's title or description. This book is very complete, though. While you could go through it from front to back, its value is as a look-up source.

Tolpin writes as if he's visiting with you in his shop. His explanations are clear and his tips are practical and do not require ownership of every power tool made.

This would be a great gift for anyone interested at all in woodworking.

This is a good reference book - there's just enough information to be useful, not too much so that it's overwhelming. If you are looking for your first woodworking reference, this is a good overview of all the basics, from wood types, to tools and techniques, project design concepts, and home shop setup. There's a really nice appendix at the end the book, with a list of other recommended reads, and lots of "woodworker geek charts and graphs" to ensure that this book stays in the shop. Lots of good info at a value price.

Packed with tons of useful information

Just starting to dabble in woodworking as a hobby, I have acquired several books, but this is definitely one that I keep coming back to, and there a several reasons for that.

First and maybe most important is that it's bound in such a way that I can lay the book flat on the table. It allows me to go set up a tool, and constant refer back to the book without having to put weights to hold the book open, photocopies, etc. It's at much a tool as anything else in the shop.

Second, it covers all the major power tools, and their intended uses. It doesn't just tell you what each tool is, and how they work, but the best methods of how to use the tool.

Third, it is chock full of all sorts of tips and tricks to help make the work that you're doing easier and/or more precise. While sometimes it may be hard to remember exactly where a particular trick may be, the book does have a well put together index to help finding things.

This is easily the most important book that I have in my workshop, and have recommended it to others that I know. Now if only other book manufacturers would bind their books in the same way.

As other reviewers have noted this is a great reference book for the workshop and I know I will use it constantly. My disappointment lies in the fact that the book jacket is terribly flimsy and made of really thin card. I can't imagine it lasting long even given that the spiral binding makes the book easy to use.

World Voyagers: Two sailors and a pussycat go to sea

_World Voyagers_ is a thoroughgoing delight.
This handsome, hard-cover book (it even has a blue ribbon built in for keeping your place) tells how Amy P. Wood, her husband Philip J. Shelton and their cat Stewart P. Wood built a barn in their back yard in Maine, built therein a solid sailing ship, and sailed the thing around the world. They brought it home again to Maine, where they sold it. Now Phil is talking about building a bush/seaplane to fly in the Far North. (It seems the guy can do anything technical.) If there's a book about it, I want to read that one too.
_Voyagers_ is rich in dialog, but in some of the best parts Amy is describing place and people they have encountered along the way. The book does seem to be in Amy's voice, though both people and even the cat are credited as authors.
It is rich in photographs, virtually all of which are too small. However, making them larger would have made the book either unreasonably large or unreasonably expensive, or both. In one of the photos, Phil is nude (as he apparently often was) and we see his bare bum. No such pix of Amy, though. Pity.
Being confined on a boat for months with just one other person sounds like it could be a trial. Amy and Phil took alternate days as captain, and seem to have managed the trip without bloodshed or even serious argument, mainly by showing kindness, consideration, generosity and respect for each other.
Endpapers show rough maps of the voyage, and there's a glossary explaining most of the salty terminology likely to be inevitable in such a book.

We echo the many accolades given to the "World Voyagers". It's a book that you can't put down or find something on every page to share with anyone within hailing distance. We espcially enjoyed Amy's analogies.
This past fall we so appreciated having Phil and Amy as our guests to relate this adventure to the Pen Bay Alumni Chapter of the Maine Maritime Academy. Attending alumni represented nearly 5 hundred man years of maritime experience as naval officers, merchant ship captains, mates, pilots, and engineers. To say that we were intrigued and impressed with the combined talents and courage of this couple would be a huge understatement!!!

THE STORY OF AMY AND PHIL'S JOURNEY AROUND THE WORLD IN THE BOAT THEY BUILT IN GEORGETOWN, MAINE IS MORE THAN SIMPLY AMAZING. I COULD NOT PUT THE BOOK DOWN, READING STRAIGHT THROUGH FOR TWO AND HALF DAYS. THE SHEER AMOUNT OF COURAGE AND SKILL AND HUMOR NEEDED TO TRAVEL TOGETHER FOR THREE YEARS, TO BE VULNERABLE IN THE OPEN OCEAN AND THE VARIOUS COUNTRIES VISITED TAKES A KIND OF AUTHENTICITY AND INTEGRITY SORELY LACKING IN THE CULTURE OF TODAY THAT DICTATES DO EVERYTHING QUICKLY AND WITHOUT CONSEQUENCES. THE CONSEQUENCES OF A POOR DECISION ON THE HIGH SEAS OR VISITING A HOSTILE COUNTRY COULD BE LOSS OF LIFE. THIS BOOK SHOULD BE REQUIRED READING FOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS TO GIVE THEM A TRUE PORTRAIT OF BRAVERY, CREATIVE ENDEAVORS AND HOW TO BE BE REAL IN A SOCIETY THAT HAS SLIPPED THE RAILS.

First Off....Amy and Phil have produced a volume that is one of the most beautiful/handsome books that I own...and...I Have MANY!! I found myself handing my copy to the "book -lovers"and librarians(each of whom have ordered their own copy) in my life...just to observe their reactions...a superb effort....I am currently stepping the masts and finishing up a similar cruising vessel..38foot wooden Double ender..with plans/hopes to take her to New Zealand. This unvarnished contemporary account of two circumnavigators and their joys and travails while circling the globe..accompanied by many beautiful photos....is priceless for it's honesty and detail. As an indicator of this book "as an experience" they have included a Blue satin Place marker...integral to the binding...which leaves a feeling of being..."cared for"...by the authors as you accompany them from Georgetown , Maine around the world and home again. Sailors will recognize many familiar mental scenarios as they decide whether to continue from the galapagos....when "HOME" in Maine tries to call them back....how they deal with illness and/or seasickness...for themselves or their beloved FELINE crewmember... decide how to handle the "boat kids" in many anchorages...no holds are barred...no punches pulled... We watch and read how they made THEIR decisions...and are left with the opportunity to make our own decisions/mistakes!! when the time comes!!

WORLD VOYAGERS is authentic accounting of a Lifetime adventure....by a couple who have chosen to live their life TOGETHER, while recognizing that our contemporary lives are often fraught with emotional upheavals and "chapter changes"...family dilemmas and decisions that don't always "go as we might have planned". Congratulations to Amy and Phil on a job/book....WELL DONE!! Fare Forward World Voyagers!!

Amy and Philip and Stewart the cat's grand adventure deserved a magnificent, padded hardcover tome filled with great photographs and everything they left out of the website log. This is it. Only people who built their own boat and then sailed it around the world could tell a tale like this, then put it together in such a handsome package.

Somewhere along the line you'll find a connection and thus, gain understanding. One thing she takes into consideration is...there is no one size fits all.

She does not present any esoteric analytical or existential ideologies, but rather guides the reader to greater personal insight and problem solving that is practical and achievable. This is an excellent children's book. Even though I am not a child nor have
children, I read it. I speak English as a second language and reading
children's books is a great start for me to read in English. The language
used in the book was easy to understand and provided great deal of
vocabulary. I enjoyed reading about Florida's local history that the book's
characters Bobby, Joe and Katy are experiencing by visiting Amelia Island.
I've been to Amelia Island and am pleased to see that author kept the
description historically accurate.

What a fun read for elementary and middle school children! We are following the Johnson family as they continue to explore history and local color....this time on Amelia Island. The resources and activities Mrs. Wood offers are excellent for teachers. There are puzzles, word searches, and wonderful discussion questions guaranteed to promote classroom interaction and critical thinking skills. Children can identify with the sibling relationships and family dynamics in each story. The characterizations make one feel as though the children are someone we all know and love!

English teacher Jane R. Wood presents Adventures on Amelia Island: A Pirate, A Princess, and Buried Treasure, an adventure novel for middle school and junior high young adult readers that continues the saga of the Johnson family and their knack for personally experiencing connections with history. When the family spends a week on Amelia Island during the annual Isle of Eight Flags Shrimp Festival, five-year-old Katy learns about a real princess who once lived near there, and encounters a mysterious pirate - is he real, or just a product of her youthful fantasies? Nine-year-old Bobby hunts for the buried treasure of legend supposedly hidden on the island. Bobby and his older brother Joey visit a cemetery, a 19th century fort, and streets reputed to be haunted by ghosts. Black-and-white illustrations intersperse this engaging tale, which draws upon carefully researched history to mesh with the medley of adventure and legend. Also highly recommended is Wood's previous young adult novel, "Voices in St. Augustine".

Aram's story is based on the life of an Armenian orphan brought to Canada in 1923. Aram's journey out of Turkey (with his grandmother) during the Armenian Genocide, to an orphanage in Greece, and on to a farm in rural Ontario is one of new discoveries and experiences--unforgettable are his nighttime swim around the skeleton of a sunken ship, arriving at the Port of Quebec, and eating his first banana.

Historical information is smoothly woven into the story, as golden threads enrich silk fabric. Backmatter includes maps tracing Aram's journey, a glossary, bibliography of novels about the Armenian Genocide, including two gems by Marsha Skrypuch, Internet sites and films, an index, biographical information on the author and illustrator, and a historicl note. Color illustrations enrich the pages of this historically accurate, thoroughly researched, and well-designed book. A memorable chapter book in the New Beginnings series, ARAM'S CHOICE is a must-read.

ARAM'S CHOICE takes readers on a journey into the unknown with a group of young Armenian orphans who must leave their homeland or face extermination. Such a heavy theme, written differently, could have weighed the book down but, told through the eyes of a child, blends hardship with courage, fear with wonder and discouragement with hope. Both text and illustrations are beautifully and authentically crafted, bringing alive the experience of Canada's Georgetown Boys.

Highly recommended.

I'll admit, historical fiction is not usually my first choice of genre, but this small treasure of a story was enough to change my tastes! I wasn't even aware of the Armenian genocide--another painful chapter in mankind's history. This account picks up with the rescue of some young boys who are sent to an orphanage in Corfu and then to Canada to start new lives. Aram is such a likable character, such a boyish boy in the midst of all these historical events! I once asked my mother, a history major, how she thinks children should study history. She replied that they should study the lives of intriguing people in the context of history. Aram reminded me that one young life, of such value in and of itself, could paint a vivid picture of a forgotten time in history--one that deserves to be acknowledged and remembered.

I enjoyed each and every chapter of "At Work in Penn's Woods." The author did a tremendous amount of research and it was very thorough. He covers the CCC from its inception until its death. Despite the fact that it is an historical book, it is very readable and not at all boring.

He does an excellent job of describing what the purpose of the CCC was; the politics involved in administering it; the role African-Americans took (had to take) in the CCC; the role of the CCC during the Depression, when the Corps began, through to the buildup to, and beginning of, World War II, when the program was finally shut down; tasks that the CCC men (boys) performed; as well as other topics.

Although there are some statistics and charts in the book, they are interesting and needed, and most are contained in an appendix.

As mentioned in other reviews, Dr. Speakman's inspiration for the book came from the fact that his father was in the Pennsylvania CCC. My father was also in the Corps, hence my interest. Unfortunately, my father's time and work in the CCC was a topic that we didn't really talk about, so I have no oral history from him about his experiences. On the bright side, my sister does have the documentation of my father's service in the Corps, so at least I know the Camp, Company, and time that he served. That's a start.

To those who have had a relative in the Pennsylvania CCC, this book is a must read. To those who did not, or don't realize that they did, it is still very highly recommended for the fact that you will be amazed at how many projects these men worked on throughout the Commonwealth. I'd be willing to bet that there's one close to where you live - most likely still in existence.

This well-researched and authoritative book will be of great interest to anyone with an interest in Pennsylvania's history, and a love for the state's outdoor resources. The Civilian Conservation Corps program during Roosevelt's New Deal was especially successful in Pennsylvania, due to the presence of tens of thousands of unemployed young men during the leanest years of the Great Depression, plus the need for statewide conservation work to repair forests and natural lands after the logging era. Visitors to any number of Pennsylvania State Parks and Forests will make use of facilities built by the CCC, and backpackers will not have to hike far to find remnants of the widespread tree farms that CCC workers planted in previously denuded or clear-cut areas. Speakman untangles the confusing administrative history of the CCC, as the program was set up during an economic emergency and had conflicting goals and priorities. We learn that the CCC truly benefited thousands of young men during hard economic times and vastly improved Pennsylvania's natural environment, but also that the program was marred by political infighting in Washington, poorly-planned administration and logistics, and creeping militarization during the war years. Speakman also digs deeper into some unexpected aspects of the CCC program, as some companies worked on private farms or in city parks, and there is an outstanding chapter on the inequality faced by African American CCC workers. While the CCC ultimately proved to be a temporary outgrowth of the New Deal, the evidence of the program's usefulness can be seen all over Pennsylvania. [~doomsdayer520~]

I have never heard of this book before I checked it out at my daughters school libray. It is a good book to read before bedtime.

My mom got this book for me for a school report and it is easy for me to read and understand. I like her to read it before I go to sleep at night. I would tell my friends about this book because it is a good book and it is about animals. I really like the end when the grandma owl comes out to tell a short story about the animals and then she says "sweet dreams".

as a closing this was an interesting and fun book to read and I even purchased 5 other books similar to this one for my girls i know they will enjoy, thank you...

My three year-old daughter happened upon this book at the library the other day and we fell in love with it the first time we read it. She absolutely loved the illustrations of the little furry animals. But even more, she loved the language that the author used for the different animals. The baby toadlets were her favorite in the ubp, glup mud.

As a parent and teacher, is a great book for getting a younger child to follow a pattern. On each page "deep down in the woods at sleepytime" is used to start and then the pictures allow for further hints to the words that follow.

This is a page turner for my daughter and I love the rhythm that is created by the words. The language is soothing and gets my daughter ready for bed in an instant. This will be a book that we will definitely add to her library in the near future!

I had not heard of nor seen this book until my 18-month-old son found it in the library -- and now he wants to bring it home every time -- and we have to read it every night. (So it's on his Santa list this Christmas.)

It's hard to describe his reaction to this story, but when we read it, I can feel his entire body relax. (And yes, he likes the goo, glup sounds of the toadlets the best.) I read with different voices for the tiny animals, and a sing-song voice for the Wise Grandma Owl.

It's important to mention, too, that I like the simplicity, repetition, and calming tone of this book. And I love to read it to my son. Which is important when purchasing children's books...you'll be reading them a thousand times!

These "books" come in magazine form. They are highly educational, and satisfy my 4 1\2 year old's curiosity, while giving him facts in a very interesting way. We have the Elephants issue, and I have learned things I didn't know!!

Very educational

I found this book unexpectedly in Grandma's house, and, as I've decided to start reading more, I read it. It was terrific. Leslie told exactly how he felt, and he told it well enough that I felt it too. What happened to him may as well have happened to me, reading this book. His narration took me directly into the North Woods. And, once I was there, there was no lack of a story to keep me moving along. I watched the three cubs become his family; I watched them grow up; I watched them through fun and hard times. The forest was rich with detail and poignant occasions. I am staunchly against crying, but at the end I seriously thought about considering it, and that's not something that is easy to make me do. All in all, I have to say that you really need to get your hands on this book.

In correction of the review written below, the book was made into a movie in 1974, starring Patrick Wayne. It's very hard to find, but is worth seeing. The story, both on the page on the screen, is wonderous.

I have read this book for the 5th time since I was about 8 years old. I am 36 and it has never lost its' grip on me. Leslie's first hand account of communing with bears in British Columbia's remote, yet not remote enough, North Woods is truly unforgettable. How this book became out of print, and never a movie or documentary defies explanation. Leslie's descriptive language and compelling narrative is a tribute to nature writers everywhere. Readers who like Farley Mowat and Robert Redford would like this book. I plan on passing this on to my 2 year old son as my mother passed it on to me whaen old enough to comprehend. Long live the bear!
