Our toddler loves this one- we checked it out from the library and had to read it every night we had it (sometimes 2 or 3 times). So guess it's time to buy it!

This book is so silly I thought my 2.5 year old daughter wouldn't like it. I picked it up becuase her favorite book is King Bidgood but after reading it myself I wasn't sure....

But... she loves it. She thinks it is hysterical and she keeps asking me to read it again and tickle her when they tickle each other in the book.

Great Book!

I bought this book for my 19 year old daughter. This was one of her favorite books growing up. We have quoted Silly Sally for the past nine years when we are feeling "silly".

My 2 1/2 year old son is crazy about this book! I never write reviews, but this book is so amazing that I had to say something! We read it over and over, it gets him up to bed eagerly instead of my having to chase him around the house. That in itself is worth it! It is also enjoyable for adults, I have not gotten tired of it either. A couple of sentences a page, great pictures and really fun. Perfect for a 2-3 year old who wants a story, but not too many words on each page. Also perfect for boys who like being "upsidedown". My son has at least 100 books, and this is in his top 3, he wants to read it every night.

We love this book!

The whole family has this book memorized! Our 18 month old has had us read it so many times that we know the whole thing by heart and so does she! This size is nice because we can all sit together and read it. A little big for the book basket but great for sharing!

Silly Sally went to town walking backwards upside down.

She meets some silly animals on the way and they join her as she dances, leaps, sings and fals asleep on her way into town. Neddy Buttercup wakes them all up and they complete their silly journey.

Very Addictive! You'll be saying the lines to yourself all day!

My daughter had great fun designing and putting together these cards but was disappointed she had to stop at 6. I can't seem to find any place that sells more of the "sticky" paper. They include tons of stickers and paper but only enough sticky paper for 6 cards. I guess we could use glue with a paintbrush but that kind of defeats the purpose of a "kit".

This card kit was perfect. We used it to make thank you notes. My daughter is 9 but still needed a little bit of help (she can be a little glue happy). She could have done them 100% on her own but I wanted them to come out a bit neater. We both had so much fun. The glitter is very fine, so it looks so pretty on the card. The book that comes w/ it is cool too. We got a lot of ideas for making cards and it made us think of other things we could use. I am buying a 2nd kit so we can always make our own cards. I hope they make a Christmas one.

A craft set that any girl would love.

I'm a mom and even I had LOADS of fun with this. This is great for any girl of any age (Use caution and supervision with small children as there are little bits, pieces, glitter etc..)I bought 2 of these as I wanted to spend qualtiy time with my 11 year old daughter doing crafts.
We made all sorts of cards and gave them away as gifts, even boys can have fun with this, with supervision, my little boy made me a "Mommy's card" It was too cute! Some young children might not know what they are doing but the important thing is for them to have fun and with guidance they will know what this, that or the other is for (As in the case with my 4 year old)
Long after you are done using up all of the product, you still got a fab book to get ideas from and you can also use the little spares you had left over for other projects.
I really don't have any complaints, some of you might complain about not having enough of this or that, but in reality this craft kit has everything to make 20 cards, and that itself is worth the money and most importantly it's something very fun and creative for the young ones.
Everyone who received a card of course was quite happy and surprised at the creativity involved, the cards made for grandma and grandpa, mom and dad etc were very much appreciated and adored.
In this kit you will get 20 different colored paper (you fold them in half to make cards) 20 different colored envelopes.Glitter,a sheet of velum, a length of silver ribbon, punch out pictures, adhesive squares for the pictures (you fix them on the back and place them on the card to make the pictures come out at you like 3-D)There are some other things that you get, but I will let that be a surprise!
Of course the only thing you do not get but might have already in the home are the glue (You can get most anywhere for less than a dollar-Elmers school non toxic glue)and a pair of scissors for any cutting you might want to do.
Overall this was a really nice craft kit.A perfect gift for any child.

Lots of fun!

If you've ever wanted to make your own greeting cards, the Sparkle Card Kit is for you. It comes with everything you need to get started - nice color paper, envelopes, ribbon, glitter, even rhinestones! What I liked best was that after making a few cards with what the kit came with, I started realizing what else I could use to make greeting cards - fabric, yarn, tissue paper, the possibilities will become endless once you start!

This kit was not only fun for me, but everyone I've sent a card to has loved it as well!

This is a fabulous "fill-in" book. It fills in when you just have a few minutes to read at a time, like during the week for me. But I don't mean that negatively. You can start and finish however many little interesting stories you can cram in within the time allotted. I happen to be a carpenter and woodworker but nearly every tidbit in here was still new and interesting to me. (Well, at least with the exception of what framing lumber dimensions actually are). I'm kind of a minutiae nut and if you're the same way, you'll love this book. He does an uncanny job of painting mental pictures of arcane topics like the building of guitars, pianos or baseball bats. It's fortunate that the writing is so understandable and concise because the pictures are a bit lacking. OK so there's one negative comment!

Spike Carlsen took a topic that could have been as exciting as, well watching wood grow, carved it into a well written story, with lots of humor and tales of how us humans---our very society itself---would not, could not be the same as it is today without this precious resource. This book, and the folks in it (and their unique personalities), and the woods themselves (each exotic specimen having its own incomparable story) is written with the same reverence an author would bring to a well researched and documented historical novel. He explains in exquisite, easy to read detail why certain woods are used for specific applications and how highly skilled craftsmen produce one of a kind pieces, which because they are made from material that were once alive, have taken on a life of their own. Great book I know will enjoy as much as I have!

This is a book on a huge topic, and thus not easy to review. It is sparingly illustrated, mostly with B&W photographs, which come across moderately well as they are printed at an adequate size.

It covers an admirable breadth of material, and it reads very well, moving right along, in a chatty tone (it is a very American book). Not sure about the depth, in a few cases it was very noticeable that the writer had missed out on the best half of the story he was telling.

I see no reason why this should not be very popular with the American woodworker, or person with an interest in wood.

Not just for woodworkers

Because this book is as much about people as it is about wood it's incredibly readable -- and funny. The author got out from behind the desk and got into the stories as much as possible and shares self-effacing tales along the way.

The book is set-up as individual essays so readers can pick and choose where to start. I was drawn to the one on Jimmy Carter and how wood forensics helps to solve crimes.

It's good for the Cliffy Claven in your life as well as the public radio essay listener looking for a human lesson behind the facts.

This is a book about wood that will amaze you, inform you, make you wise and make you laugh. Where else, between two covers could you hope to learn about the history of the catapult, the worlds largest wooden airplane, a model city built of 2 million toothpicks, how a grand piano is made, the world championship belt sander races, and much, much more. On top of that you will get more solid, well-informed information about wood and trees than you ever thought you'd want to know. And you'll keep reading right to the end because it's beautifully and smoothly written and great fun throughout.

Lange is O. Henry-esque in his descriptions of people and scenes with a hint of Robert Frost's New England accent. The slim collection of memories, a mere 86 pages, takes the reader to Lange's first day at a New England boarding school, then to a frigid wood's cabin that he shares with a mouse, and back through memories as he refinishes a canoe.
I never heard him read these on the radio, but they are ideal for reading aloud. Each story contains a heart-warming feeling. Travel with Lange to the woods as he takes a final hunting trip with an old man or explores a long-abandoned home site.
It left me wishing for more of these contemplative word pictures of the New England woods.

This thin book delivers powerful images of how New England was and strives to remain. Short essays cover typical events and personalities, most often humorous, always interesting. A great way to discover why we think there's no other place to live.

I first became acquainted with the work of essayist Willem Lange through his appearances on the Vermont Public Television program "RFD," which normally ends its weekly broadcast with a piece by this wordsmith. The essays in this charming little book are culled from other writings and are perfect examples of Mr. Lange's style. With a minimum of very well chosen words, Mr. Lange paints a detailed picture of people, places, and events and wraps us in his love for all. There are some very heart-felt expressions here: A Letter to a newborn grandchild; A sudden understanding of his wife's life-long torment; An appreciation of past leadership provided by a mentor. In all, there are 18 tiny gems here, none longer than four pages, but the scope of their sentiment is unending. This is a book to treasure and read over and over again. If only it were longer.

First-rate, high quality throughout, this volume does what a book of this type should do: packs in plenty of color plates of the masks, and shows them being worn (in black-and-white in situ photos) on the accompanying left-hand pages of the spreads. The collection is far-ranging and, though it cannot include every type of mask, it does manage to convey the incredible variety, richness and paradoxical sophistication of this art form. Highly recommended.

I bought the hardcover version of this & it is well worth the additional expense because the photos are excellent in quality & number. The printing of the photos is of a very high quality. The book is well organized by region & tribes; since many tribes do not adhere to modern borders. I also bought THE TRIBAL ARTS OF AFRICA it is very good but the organization is poor (by region & country) and the descriptions for the smaller photos are not in the same order as the photos, so one has to really search to find out what one is looking at. Whereas the variety and great quality of the photos in AFRICAN MASKS enabled me to definitively identify a mask I acquired 30 years ago. If you collect or love viewing West African carvings I recommend investing in the hardcover version.

I, like many others, read this book when I was about 15 years old. I am now 33 and I still think of this book often. My cousin and best friend, Nicole, passed this book on to me to read. She passed away when we were 19 and this book remains in my life as a reminder of our friendship and kinship. This book grips you from the beginning and refuses to let you go even when you have finished reading it. I truly love this book and am glad to know that it has been a wonderful read for others like me.

A definitive work on the phenomenon of petrified wood. Ancient Forrests focuses on the science of petrified wood. It has an amazing wealth of photographs. Many focus on the grain patterns and the amazing detail that can be found in the many different species of petrified wood. There are also many whole specimens and overviews of famous wood collections such as the Murphy collection at the Rice Museum in Portland Oregon. If you are at all interested in Petrified wood, this is a must-have book, Beautiful!

I have seen a few of the petrified wood samples in museums which are shown in these books, and the photoimages correspond to the authentic samples. I have two other petrified wood photo books that I have loaned out but I don't remember their titles (mostly chapters by German authors). Daniels two books are the very best. Howard McPherson

I took the AP Comparative Government test, like most people, because it comes free with the US government test. About 2 weeks before the test, I broke down and realized that I needed to get a prep book from which to study, or I wasn't going to do well. This book arrived at my doorstep 9 days before the exam. With just a reasonable general knowledge of global affairs as my only prerequisite, I read this book cover to cover and got a 5 on the test without a hitch. The questions on the exam were so reminiscent of this book that it almost seemed as if they were written by the same author. After a thorough reading of this, I don't see how anyone could possibly score below a 4, and I find it highly unlikely that anyone would not get a 5.

Not bad.

I am a high school senior who took AP Comparative Government last year. My course only lasted 3 months, so my teacher had a hard time cramming so much knowledge into our brains in such a short time span. Hence, I decided to do some outside reading (a first for me), so I bought this book. Ethel Wood's study guide is the most comprehensive book on comparative government. It is very easy to read and rather succint. The quizzes inbetween each chapter are fantastic, as are the two practice exams. I was able to skim the entire book in a couple of days (its not hard at all), and a few days before the exam I thoroughly read the entire book. Although some questions on the exam were not discussed in this study guide, I was able to pull off a 5.

For further proof that this book works miracles, my friend also purchased it, read it, and got a 5. We were the only two in our class to achieve this, and we both admit that we would have failed, had it not been for Ethel Wood's fantastic study guide.

Patrick Leigh Fermor not only fills the 'unforgiving minute' but describes that experience in a way that transports us to that minute. One line from "Between the Woods and the Water" stays in my mind. "The heat and weight of the summer bore down and not a leaf stirred". Or, how about, "the newly distilled spirit had taken out the peasants like sniper". For a feeling of 'being there' he can't be beaten, certainly not by Ernest Hemingway who tried and failed by appearing too contrived. The writers who achieve this power to transport, as musicians or painters do can let us ignore their presence and I think that is their artistic intention, to merely present (with all their craftsmanship but so it doesn't show). Paul Bowles is such a writer as is Elmore Leonard. But that's another story.

The author, a rebellious teen in England, undertakes to walk from the Hook of Holland to Constantinople -- in 1937. This is the second half of his journey, through the Balkans and Danube lands. He has an ear for peoples' opinions, the oddities of Hapsburg imperial goulashes of different ethnicities & religions--most of which would be erased by the coming war. One has the sense of a "last glimpse" of the highly cultivated, varied human landscape of Europe before the war and Cold War divided its peoples.

Like most literary masterpieces this marvelous book has a outer vehicle that develops an inner theme. The vehicle is a journey on foot, horseback and barge across Europe in the 1930's when the author was 19. The inner theme is a resolution of polarities and opposites of all kinds. First there is the overriding polarity of solitude and company. He enjoys spending time with friends and friends of friends at their country homes in Hungary and Roumania and passing hours in their sometimes fabulous libraries but he finds refreshment and spiritual renewal in long solitary walks in wooded mountains and along the banks of the Danube where he meets an occasional deer or golden eagle. He relishes staying with his wealthy, worldly and sophisticated hosts but also enjoys the company of peasants, gypsies and lumberjacks. He likes passing comfortable nights in reasonably soft beds with clean linens but doesn't shrink from sleeping in hayricks or under sheltering oaks. The interplay of past and present are another polarity he weaves into the narrative. His knowledge of history and use of it in this work is both magnificent and enviable. Leigh Fermor is in fact one of the most cultured contemporary writers I have had the good fortune to read. He is a good linguist, a masterful historian and , surprisingly, a knowledgeable theologian. But that is only half the story. He is also a super-macho man of action completely aware of his body and its interaction with the environment. This we know from his activities, almost heroic feats, during WWII, especially in Crete. In the present book he coordinates his mental and physical endowments to produce a gorgeously textured masterpiece of English prose. Sex is not absent from the narrative but it is never described in terms that could be considered even remotely graphic. Acts are kept in the wings while he concentrates on the social, intellectual, and aesthetic dimensions of his relations with women. Unfortunately Amazon.com does not keep an ample stock of Leigh Fermor's works, so I had to purchase my copy from Amazon.co.uk. I may be impatient but my sense of company loyalty is unimpeachable. No?

I loved this book and other writing by the Author. Reading this book is like travelling with a friend. The author tells a beautiful tale of Europe just before the war. His style and tempo are close and personal, and when you reach the end of the trip, you know that you have encountered the Europe of a bygone era. Here in Canada many of my friends parents' were born in Germany, Hungary, and Romania. I tell them that this book is required reading.

I am not aware of any other account of Ada Kaleh, the island in the Danube populated by a Turkish enclave that was lost when the river was dammed in the '40s. I found an old postcard of the island in Hungary, and it's one of my favorite possesions.

Great little book. Both the writing and illustrations work really well. Humerous and informative. My kids(10 and 8) really enjoyed this book. As did I. An intelligent way to make history fun for younger readers.

Blushing and turning in my toes (just like George, Himself), I, like millions of others stand corrected about that arch-villain of our history, George III! As it turns out, he's a real person, just like the rest of us.

Can't You Make Them Behave, King George? brings his story to life for young readers. There's a lot for parents and teachers to enjoy here, too. Huzzah for Jean Fritz, who knows how to tell "his-story" with a great sense of humor making it as enjoyable as it should be.

This book is a pleasure to read.

I learned all kinds of things about King George, Queen Charlotte and others. It really helped me with my research on the Revolutionary war. In this book you get to learn the funny things about King George and things that happened during his time.

Nice history, cutely written and illustrated.

I bought this book to read with my children (ages 8 and 10). I found the book interesting, and learned a bit about King George's youth. My children thought it wasokay, even though their father was forcing it on them. I even caught my wife sneaking a read.

The writing style is nice and folksy, and the illustrations are charmingly naive. The personal spin it places on the American Revolution, coupled with the emphasis on the British perspective, is a refreshing contrast to some of the more serious books I've read on revolutionary history.

All in all, a nice read.

King George is considered to be one of the greatest opponents of the American Revolution. But does anyone ever really hear of his good traits until now. And in a childrens book! Well I know I didn't. And after reading this short story I found that ole George wasn't such a bad guy after all. All he wanted was for Brittain to become, well...richer. Couldn't those colonists help pay for some of his debts. Well maybe, if those colonists actually had any SAY in British matters then they should have to pay taxes. Well I still think he wasn't a BAD guy, he just tried to take the easiest way out.

Tomie DePaola and Jean Fritz-I think-make the perfect team. His comical illustrations with her undefinable text make this book a classic.

Fritz or Freedman '04. You decide.
