I love this book. This is a great book for any dog lover and even those that are still on the fence about dogs. It is even better for any person who owns a 'Scotty'. That group of people can truly appreciate this book.

As a lifelong Vermonter, now wintering in Florida, this book is a "must have" to remind me and my family of the special quality of life in the Green Mountains of Vermont. The book is a well written history of the state and includes splendid photographs of diverse scenes throughout the state.

The Duchess of York has done her finest work in this elegant and collectible book. It contains very carefully documented and well written information on Victoria and Albert's life with their children. The pictures and drawings bring us to another place and time in the grandeur of this Victorian Royal Family. Heart renching, captivating and a real life tragedy

i guess I am slightly biased as i am Joanna Hart sister to Victoria and younger daughter to elizabeth and Alan Hart.

I was only able to bring myself to read my mum's book 4yrs ago as it was and still is a very painful subject to me.

I felt that my mother described perfectly our childhood through this traumatic time and am very proud of her achievement. I know how difficult it was for her to write about a subject that is so close to all our hearts.

My sister was a real fighter and she never gave up hope, she had a tireless spirit and such an enthusiasm for life that she made us all realise how little time we all have to live.

I certainly would recommend reading this book as it makes you appreciate life and not take anything for granted.

I miss my sister desperatley but her spirit lives on in my heart and in this book.

Thank you for your time

joanna Hart

An old mystery on the English coast

I have recently discovered Barbara Whitnell's books and am very disappointed that so many of her titles are out of print. Her books are a combination of Rosamund Pilchers charming English country side family dynamics with a bit of Mary Higgins Clark's wonderful mysteries added.

The View From the Summer House is a wonderful read with down to earth and likable characters. The mystery is superbly crafted.

If you are making a list of "summer reads" I recommend that you at A View From the Summer House to your list.

--A story as cosy as a warm quilt--
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.

This is a lovely Christmas story about the Emery's, a young and modern couple who have three little girls. They move to a little English village that's called Fairacre and where everyone has known each other for ages. The villagers think that the new people are entirely too friendly and don't fit into village life. The closest neighbors to the Emery's are sisters, Mary and Margaret Waters, two elderly spinsters. The two sisters' are weary of their new neighbors and surprised to find that Mrs. Emery is expecting a fourth child. They are kind and pleasant to them, but don't want to get too involved with the Emery family. In fact, there's an old Victorian sampler hanging on their cottage wall that says "Be friendly to all, but familiar with few."

Christmas Day is a special time for Mary and Margaret and each detail of the entire day is planned from the morning religious service to the ritual of preparing the Christmas meal. When one of the Emery children comes by with a plea for help, Mary and Margaret respond with goodwill and have a really exciting day and everyone has a wonderful Christmas.

A delightful litte book! Now I want to read the other short stories about the happenings in Fairacre Village.

Adjusting to life after the death of Charles in Somerset
Helpful Votes: 16 out of 16 total.
Review Date: 1998-08-13
'Waiting in the Wings' is a departure from Doreen Tovey's usual style of writing and approach to her subject matter. This book is the culmination of the development of the theme of the life she lived with her husband Charles and their animals in the Mendip Hills of Somerset and consequently is one of the best she has produced so far. Unlike most of her previous works which focus mainly on the idiosyncrasies of the cats and Annabel, the donkey, the focus of this book merges with that of her relationship with Charles. His death and the gradual process of adjusting to a life without him are the main theme of this book. As the author comes to terms with her loss she learns how life continues to go on yet never losing the feeling that Charles is never far away. Her natural and easy humour that is a well known trademark of her earlier works is still very much in evidence as she adjusts to learning new skills and asserts her determination to continue living in her isolated cottage. The cats and Annabel continue to provide plenty of embarrassing and wonderful moments as well as sadness but throughout the book Mrs Tovey never looses hope. Her struggles with learning to drive, holidays with her caravan, whitwashing and redecorating the cottage, her researches into her husband's family tree, encounters with spiritualism and interest in the life of T.E. Lawrence are just some of the many incidents and activities she continued to be involoved with after Charles's death. Her friendship with Derek and Jean Tangye (of the Minack Chronicles) and Joyce Fussey (author of the Westwath books) is mentioned for the first time along with her continuing interest in the happenings of people she encounters in her everyday life, especially her Aunt Louisa and neighbours in the village. This work is not only inspirational and entertaining but also is evident of Mrs Tovey's matured style without losing sight of the humour that is so characteristic of all her earlier works and one looks forward to what else she will produce in the future.
