A standout amid a crowded genre

This is a gem of a mystery in the amateur-female gumshoe field. Tucker has fashioned a solid, engrossing plot, a unique setting (rural and borderline redneck Ohio), a small cast of believable characters, and a strong, distinctive heroine. It's one of the few mysteries I've read that don't overwhelm you with too many red herrings, yet present just enough information to make the puzzle challenging. It even has a great canine character too!

Lawrence Sanders at his best
Helpful Votes: 7 out of 8 total.
Review Date: 2000-04-12
Lawrence Sanders has written one of his best books. The story involves a Hollywood movie actress (Marilyn Taylor) who agrees to a laparoscopy of her eggs so she can provide in vitro fertilization for her best friend. The eggs get stolen and that is when the fun starts. The eggs are stolen by half a dozen people -- a crazy fan, the LA and Chicago Mafia, a sleezy movie producer, a professional thief and his Asian "friend" and a washed-up movie actor. The NYPD assign an officer to handle the case only to become romantically entwined with Marilyn Taylor. Sanders creates a great story with lots of twists and turns and plenty of excitement. This book was funny and enjoyable to read.

George is young and wealthy, and during his frequent visits to The Empire, a popular Victorian music hall, he falls in love with Dolly Minetti, wife and partner of an illusionist. Her death on stage prompts George to forge a relationship with Dolly's daughter Maggie, a red-haired ingenue determined to take her place as Max Minetti's partner. George's family watches in fear and anger as their son's attachment to Maggie leads him from one disaster to another and a young newspaper reporter named Jack always seems to be on hand to chronicle the events. Could the formidable Ormiston Chant, an influential woman who believes the theater encourages immorality, have anything to do with this?

Gripping adventure story
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2001-09-25
You could be forgiven for thinking that this is yet another formulaic adventure story in the style of Alastair Maclean, Jack Higgins, Desmond Bagley, et al. Surprisingly however, Mr Innes has crafted a gripping tale of family honour, double-cross, exploration, romance and a terrific boardroom climax. The story sweeps from the stock markets of London to the remote reaches of the South China Sea, from dusty lawyer's offices in Threadneedle Street to the reeking cabin of a disgraced ship's captain on a broken down hulk. Through it all, Mr Innes writes with flair and originality and the result is an adventure story with a much broader sweep than the usual fare. The characters are complex and finely drawn. The hero is not an infallible man; he has doubts and fears like all of us, and the villains are made villainous, not by their evil intentions but through their all too human frailties. Sad to see this book is out of print but second-hand copies should be easy to find.

Shear pleasure to listen to or read....

I am quite a traveler, but have never really wanted to go to India...it sounded to intense for me somehow...but this book could possibly have changed my mind! I have listened to the Book on Tape and then I immediately found an out-of-print book version because I enjoyed it so much, The author, who wrote "Far Pavillions" and "Shadow of the Moon", (fiction books which incorporate stories from her childhood in India), tells of her idyllic life growing up in this beautiful land. THEN, at age 10, she is abruptly taken from everything she has ever known and sent to boarding school in England. But the book ends, thankfully, with her return to her beloved India after an absence of ten years. Can she "go home again"? Fortunately, her autobiography continues...in tape and book form... in the delightful, "Golden Afternoon"...hooray for M.M. Kaye! Oh, by the way, this book-on-tape features an absolutely wonderful reader, too.

Exciting variation on an oft-told Cold War story
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2000-07-09
Keith Beaumont, an ace British Arctic troubleshooter and scientific expert is despatched to research base Target-5 on the icepack near Greenland to intercept a Soviet defector named Gorov who is carrying secret documents detailing a submarine defence network. The contents could upset the balance of world power, as these stories dictate, so when Beaumont and Gorov are tailed by Soviet airborne assault troops, they must head towards the edge of the ice pack in a perilous journey. This is a short but thrilling novel firmly set in the 1970s, the action scenes will satisfy even the most undemanding of adventure fans and a point of interest, this Colin Forbes classic proves there was much life in his writing before he created his British superspies Tweed, Paula Grey and Bob Newman. Well worth checking out.

Long ago they had been husband and wife-when Angie Hall was just a teenage. Now, under the burning Texas sun, they are enemies-and lovers once again as Deke Blackwood's lean, hard rancher's body rekindles the long-smoldering fires between them. For in his summer house by the shimmering Gulf, the golden-haired girl has surrendered her life and her heart to become Deke's woman, to recapture the love that was...terms of surrender.

Singer, dancer, serious actor, racounter, promoter of successful alternative medical treatments; proud wife, mother, daughter; staunch Jew (with compassion for Palestinians and Burmese and Africans); owner of the most expensive door in London, all-round funny person. Read this and her others, read her columns in the Guardian, watch her as Aunt Eller in "Oklahoma!" I wish she were my next-door neighbor.
