Not just another royalty bookReview Date: 2003-01-01
The interesting introduction has an overview of the British royal family and the principles of royal succession. The text overall is both informative and entertining. I loved the many pictures of the royals and their relatives: at work, at play, in formal looking poses, etc. There are wedding pics, baby pics, and pics of royals in the fancy military uniforms that seem to never go out of fashion. Mini-biographies (very brief for the more obscure individuals) accompany the pictures. Along the way are some marvelous images and curious (occasionally even scandalous!) facts.
This is definitely one of the most enjoyable of the many royal books I have read over the years. It's full of life. Unfortunately, the 1986 edition is (as I write this review) way out of date. But the book is still well worth exploring.

I am looking forward to reading more of Sarah York's books. I am adding them to my library and am excited about the prospect of adding even more to my collection.

This is an outstanding book with beautiful pictures.Review Date: 1998-11-09
This book is by far superior to to one written by Jane Masterson; also the photographer is one who has followed the royal family for years. The titles of the two books are almost identical, but the contents very greatly.
The first picture is The Imperial Crown with its most historic jewel which is the Black Prince's ruby. When I first read this book, a few years ago, I remember thinking what an outstanding, gorgeous crown. About two pages over, it is explained using only a sentence or two.
This book is filled with pictures of all members of the family. Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother is ninety-three years of age at this time and still delights in carrying out public duties.
Mr. Graham captures outstanding picture of the family in a relaxed atmosphere, historic events, and the overseas tours of the royal family.
It includes the late Diana, Princess of Wales and end with the wedding of Lafy Sarah Armstong-Jones to Mr. Daniel Chatto which took place quietly on July 14 at St. Stephen Walbrook, small Wren church in the city of London.
Mr. Graham is always careful to caption each picture giving the names of all the individuals, the place, the function, and the date.
The back cover has a photograph of the late Diana, Princess of Wales.
This refers to the hardcover edition. 96 pages. 81/2"x12.

Catholics vs. ProtestantsReview Date: 2002-03-03
The plot deals more with the characters who are caught up in a fanatically religious time, the late 16th century of Spain, rather than the actual history itself. There is aristocratic Isabella, betrothed to Domingo, though she is in love with his dashing brother Blasco. There is Bianca, a wild gypsy girl who becomes Isabella's maid, but who has a secret affair with Blasco.
When Blasco is sent by King Philip on a secret mission to France, he sees Catholics there slaughter the Protestant Huguenots, which forever changes his opinion of Catholicism. During the uprising, he risks his life to save a Huguenot woman, then brings her to Spain, where she continues to be in danger from the Catholic Inquisitors.
While he is gone, his beloved Bianca and her mistress Isabella are abducted by English pirates, and once in England, the two Catholic women, in a reversal of religious fanaticism, find themselves in a land where Catholics are persecuted by Protestants.
Many twists and turns take place, keeping the reader guessing, and involved with all the delightful characters, including the children who take a leading role in the story. I dare not give any more of the plot away about what happens to Domingo, Blasco, Bianca, and Isabella as their lives are moved along by the forces of religious fervor. Delicious reading!

It is one of the best books on the British Royal Family that I have read. The author's insights and observations are right on target. It was published in 1993 before the tragic death of Princess Diana, but that does not change his thoughts on the problems of the monarchy. Nothing will change until the death of Queen Elizabeth II as she is too bound up in tradition to modernize. The whole family lives in a time warp.
I recommend this book highly to anyone who is interested in the history of the House of Windsor and how it is crumbling.
