One of the best books on the British Royal Family

I had read this book before, but just re-read it this weekend.
It is one of the best books on the British Royal Family that I have read. The author's insights and observations are right on target. It was published in 1993 before the tragic death of Princess Diana, but that does not change his thoughts on the problems of the monarchy. Nothing will change until the death of Queen Elizabeth II as she is too bound up in tradition to modernize. The whole family lives in a time warp.

I recommend this book highly to anyone who is interested in the history of the House of Windsor and how it is crumbling.

thumbed thru this great book at Barns and Noble and was hoping it would be less expensive on the net. I knew Prof. Carleton and took his history class at LSU. The book "The River" is seriously the best I have seen considering the real history of Baton Rouge as I know it to be. All of the "recent" characters that are noted are real to me. Mr. Lloyd Collett was my neighbor back in the 50's when he first invisioned the company that he founded. United Companies was born on Eugene Street in the 50's and has blown into a mega company. Others noted in the book are just as acurate to my knowledge and I've known them all at one time or the other. It feels like my history in this city - from 1942 to present. Prof. Carleton was in command of a wealth of history regarding this area - politically and otherwise. I wish he had not been taken at such an early age. The pictures are beyond great. Have one for me Tom - wherever you are.

A biography of a young woman's life

'Roses Round the Door' is the story of Doreen Tovey's life as a child and young woman in Somerset, England and her wartime marriage. Better known for her hilarious books on life with Siamese cats and a donkey, this book is a departure from her usual style, but no less enjoyable. In it she portrays a way of life long since vanished from her childhood in the 1920s when she lived with her grandmother, uncle and Aunt Louise to life with her husband Charles during the war. This book is written with humour and observation and culminates in the acquisition of the cottage that features so predominantly in all her other books and in which she still lives. Stories of how the young Doreen became locked into an outside privy during a country wedding, going on a bicycle tour with her accident prone aunt, her wartime marriage in the heavily bombed city of Bristol, the idiosyncrasies of the landlord and what happened when she tried making sweets during the dark days of rationing are ! just some of the many humourous events that make up this entertaining work.

"The Royal 100: A Who's Who of the First 100 People in Line of Succession to the British Throne" combines a text by Alan Hamilton with many, many photographs. The book's subtitle pretty much describes it perfectly. The book is divided into five sections that reflect the genealogical interconnections of the British royal family. The sections cover the House of Windsor and its descendants; the Norwegian royal house (yes, one of them could inherit the British crown if some massive disaster wiped out all the Windsors and descendants); the Romanian royal family; the Yugoslavian royal family; and the Russian imperial family.

The interesting introduction has an overview of the British royal family and the principles of royal succession. The text overall is both informative and entertining. I loved the many pictures of the royals and their relatives: at work, at play, in formal looking poses, etc. There are wedding pics, baby pics, and pics of royals in the fancy military uniforms that seem to never go out of fashion. Mini-biographies (very brief for the more obscure individuals) accompany the pictures. Along the way are some marvelous images and curious (occasionally even scandalous!) facts.

This is definitely one of the most enjoyable of the many royal books I have read over the years. It's full of life. Unfortunately, the 1986 edition is (as I write this review) way out of date. But the book is still well worth exploring.

I have enjoyed reading your book The Royal Switch. I am 12 years old and I would like to read more of your fiction books like The Royal Switch and Bright Lights the characters in this book are very interesting and have kept me spell bound while reading them. I would highly recommend that everyone would read them.

I am looking forward to reading more of Sarah York's books. I am adding them to my library and am excited about the prospect of adding even more to my collection.

This is an outstanding book with beautiful pictures.

Pictures of Queen Elizabeth II, the Queen Mother, Charles, Princes of Wales, the late Diana, Princess of Wales, adorn the cover of the book.

This book is by far superior to to one written by Jane Masterson; also the photographer is one who has followed the royal family for years. The titles of the two books are almost identical, but the contents very greatly.

The first picture is The Imperial Crown with its most historic jewel which is the Black Prince's ruby. When I first read this book, a few years ago, I remember thinking what an outstanding, gorgeous crown. About two pages over, it is explained using only a sentence or two.

This book is filled with pictures of all members of the family. Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother is ninety-three years of age at this time and still delights in carrying out public duties.

Mr. Graham captures outstanding picture of the family in a relaxed atmosphere, historic events, and the overseas tours of the royal family.

It includes the late Diana, Princess of Wales and end with the wedding of Lafy Sarah Armstong-Jones to Mr. Daniel Chatto which took place quietly on July 14 at St. Stephen Walbrook, small Wren church in the city of London.

Mr. Graham is always careful to caption each picture giving the names of all the individuals, the place, the function, and the date.

The back cover has a photograph of the late Diana, Princess of Wales.

This refers to the hardcover edition. 96 pages. 81/2"x12.

Recommended for romance and fantasy readers alike. You might not recognize the name on the cover, but the wit and vivacity of the characters leave no doubt as to the author's identity. The stormy relationship between the main characters echoes the turmoil of the Rialla in Rawn's Dragon Prince. Jane Austen would approve.

A dramatic audiobook adventure set in the Wild West, Hank Mitchum's Santa Fe is the riveting story of a western troubleshooter in for the deadliest test of his life when he has to bodyguard the grueling four and a half day run of a westbound stagecoach to Santa Fe, New Mexico. Indian warriors, ruthless outlaws, and a menacing stalker focused on one particular passenger are the several and blended ingredients for a danger-filled saga in this exciting and highly recommended western saga. Santa Fe is presented in the complete and unabridged audiobook recording in a captivating narrative performance by Charlie O'Dowd.

Catholics vs. Protestants
Helpful Votes: 7 out of 7 total.
Review Date: 2002-03-03
This book was originally written in 1957, but was reprinted several times. Because of my interest in the Inquisition, I decided to read it, though I don't usually read older books. I found myself immediately drawn in to an exquisitely exciting, dramatic, and well-written historical novel!

The plot deals more with the characters who are caught up in a fanatically religious time, the late 16th century of Spain, rather than the actual history itself. There is aristocratic Isabella, betrothed to Domingo, though she is in love with his dashing brother Blasco. There is Bianca, a wild gypsy girl who becomes Isabella's maid, but who has a secret affair with Blasco.

When Blasco is sent by King Philip on a secret mission to France, he sees Catholics there slaughter the Protestant Huguenots, which forever changes his opinion of Catholicism. During the uprising, he risks his life to save a Huguenot woman, then brings her to Spain, where she continues to be in danger from the Catholic Inquisitors.

While he is gone, his beloved Bianca and her mistress Isabella are abducted by English pirates, and once in England, the two Catholic women, in a reversal of religious fanaticism, find themselves in a land where Catholics are persecuted by Protestants.

Many twists and turns take place, keeping the reader guessing, and involved with all the delightful characters, including the children who take a leading role in the story. I dare not give any more of the plot away about what happens to Domingo, Blasco, Bianca, and Isabella as their lives are moved along by the forces of religious fervor. Delicious reading!
