The book is extracts from the very intimate journals of the fiddle and dancing master who taught Queen Victoria, her husband and their older children all about Scottish dancing and music and through those many subtle lessons about the essential Scottish character. As they master the steps and dances you join them as they start to have fun, putting on small dance parties and then grand Highland balls. By the end of the book you will want to find your nearest Royal Scottish Country Dance Society class and learn enough to join in the exact same fun.

I first read this books nine years ago, and have read it countless times since then. I have read over 100 romance book and this is the absolute best. No other characters can even begin to share the kind of chemistry that Stacy and Cord have together. I will always love this book and Stacy and Cord will always have a place in my heart.

"Jail doesn't agree with Tony Curbel. That's not surprising: he used to be a proper businessman, a currency trader. It also happens that he's innocent of any crime. Worse still. Tony was framed, and he suspects that his father is responsible. Enter Skinny, a mercenary cop who know that the Curbel familu business is something less than respectable. He presents Tony with a wrenching choice: Tony can stay in prison for another few years, or he can spy on his own family. Working udnercover for Skinny sounds like the better bet, and Tony has some investigating of his own to do anyway. Then he discovers that his family's "employment agency" isn't all that it seems. There's a reason his father and uncle can provide New Orleans with an endless supply of cheap labor: they buy children. They buy them in Central America, set them up in menial jobs in the United States, and get rich skimming their wages. But then Tony's father disappears, and only by digging up long-buried secrets can Tony prevent his family from tearing itself apart."

Fun Book

Ok so we get two standards in the thriller world, the unlikely pairing up of two anti heroes and the dark, problem ridden cop who some how work together and save the world. So did it work, yes it did. I may have been a bit biased when I picked up the book becuase I have read many of his others in the past and they have all been wonderful so I expected this to also be. This author is great at building the speed of the story up so that you stay turned in and race yourself to the end of the book. Well written story and characters add to a great book that is well worth the time.

Nobody does ironic wit better than the British. John Nettles was for years a classic theatre actor and enjoyed his privacy. Then he appeared in the tv series Bergerac and became, in his words, a "mini-celebrity" and children began to "hoot at him in the street and "predatory women of uncertain years" began to press themselves upon him. This is the story, in his words, of his bout with fame. Funny stuff!! It has cartoon illustrations by John Jensen too.

An Old Passion

It is an old passion. Once scorched by the intense passion she felt for Blase, Merrin is apprehensive of seeing him again. The story oscillates between the haunting memories of the past and turbulent emotions of the present. All in all, An Old Passion is a sensual and sensitive story that tugs at your heart. It makes for a very good and memorable reading. As a reader, I can return to this book again. For me, I wholeheartedly recommend any book which beckons me to reread it later because I found just too many romance books which I forgot about as soon as I finished reading them.

Nuggets of Gold

We thoroughly enjoy "On This Day" and highly recommend it!

We use it nearly every day for our family devotions. We homeschool our three boys, age 10, 8, and 3. The historical timeline and birthdays are always quite interesting. My husband begins by giving us the events one at a time. The children and I try to guess the year in which they took place - LOADS of fun! This sometimes sparks a conversation about history we have learned together in school or how the events impacted the lives of their grandparents or great-grandparents. We do the same for birthdates of the famous people listed for that day.

We recently devised a "point system". If you guess a year EXACTLY, you get one point. The boys want the person with the most points to get an extra desert as a reward. Mom has yet to agree to these terms.

We then read the scripture of the day aloud and the corresponding short story from the book. These stories and quotes are little nuggets of gold! This is no warmed-over milk! There's real meat in this compilation of timely tales. We are able springboard from this devotional to dialogue with our boys about faith, what it means, and how to walk out that faith in their everyday lives.

moving and I couldn't stop listening

I listened to this on audio. Wow what a gripping fast pace story.
What a sad moving beginning Mary ann's mother being pregnant but when she tells the father of the child, he had already found someone else and she also was pregnant. He has chosen to marry the other lady because she had a nicer personality and not as nasty like her. So she had to move towns and say that she was married and the father had been killed in the war. Mary ann is the new child brought up by an unloving mother who rules with an iron fist in a boarding house. Marys ann mother remarries to a (sleaze bag) con man who only wanted her for her money. "sign the house and everything into my name or I won't feel like the real man of the house" Mary ann has to start fighting him off with his advances to her.
Mary Ann has nowhere to go and her mother never believes anything she says. Mary Ann starts walking around with a hat pin in her apron for protection to stab him if he comes near her. Drastic circumstances.
the book is so fast moving I couldn't get out of the car. which more of Anna Jacobs stories were on audio I would listen them all.
