More island magic
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2003-12-06
This is a collection of short stories about the du Frocq family from Island Magic. The tone is much more light-hearted than the earlier book, there is none of the dark drama of Island Magic, the Grandfather for instance, although an autocrat is not a malignant figure as he is in island Magic. In this collection the boisterous and ingeneous du Frocq children involve a number of unwary characters in their madcap schemes, a famous actor finds himself taken prisoner and locked in the loft, a publisher is persuaded to buy a bookshop that will run at a massive loss, a doctor rash enough to set up a rival practice to Grandfather's is outwitted, the new island Seigneur is persuaded not to evict an aged miller from his mill. The stories are full of humour and charm, this is a lovely book.

Catherine cookson has written another delightful novel that travels through the generations of one family. The curse of the Mallen Streak is filled with tragedy and forbidden love, it takes you right to the heart of lifes trials and tribulations with all of its wanting to be accepted in a time when scandal was everything and could not be forgiven. I highly recommend this novel whether you are a Catherine Cookson fan or not!

I have an old book by Mark Catesby. Half is in French and half in English, it is supposed to one of two volumes, it is not in very good shape, and most of the plates are missing. Do you have any thing more you could tell me about this book?

From the minor to the mega
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2007-07-19
A minor local landmark built against Napoleon's invasion, rotten to the core. A minor criminal operation, taken over by a major, taken over by a mega international terrorist organisation bent on atrocities, one in particular, foiled by the shadowy and potent Security Executive putting the martello tower to its only effective use.
A glimpse of a new Mega Religion with only one Article of Faith: "The West and its present prime exponent, the USA, are works of the Devil" and only one Commandment: "Destroy these works of the Devil".

Gothic romance...

..."It is easy to see why the Venice police thought I might be responsible for that death in the Belzoni's crumbling but proud old house. First of all, I was a stranger, an American spinster of almost twenty-four, who had arrived alone in a country where no wellborn woman travels without the protection of a husband or servants. What was even more damning, I had left my native New England under the sort of circumstances often referred to as a cloud." So begins the story of Sara Randall, who fled to Venice in the 1880', almost penniless.

I love this book. It is about a young rather plain girl growing up in an upper class home in England and her experiences and friends. It has all the elements of a classic: brilliant characters, interesting well, not really a plot and good descriptions, as well as its own special charm. Amy is an especially lovable heroine and her narrative is particularly readable.

Some basic knowledge of chess is a plus when reading this novel, but it's not necessary. It is a first-rate mystery that refuses to take itself too seriously. This is Mr. Spencer's finest work and the the funniest novel I've ever read.

Excellent History of South Mississippi
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2001-01-03
Charles Sullivan and Murella Hebert Powell did a wonderful job in writing the history of one of America's fastest growing regions. From the days of Bienville and d'Iberville all the way up to the 1990's, Sullivan and Powell vividly describe the history of the Mississippi Gulf Coast. The book becomes especially interesting when the authors explore how the region reacted to America's wars. Besides military history, the book also contains information on domestic history, such as the growth of industry in the region. The excellent writing is complemented by the beautiful pictures of the people and landscape of south Mississippi. Whether you are a resident of Mississippi or just someone who is interested in the history of this growing area, you should definately consider this book.
