Cozy Relationship Novel Rich With English Charm
Helpful Votes: 20 out of 20 total.
Review Date: 2007-01-14
Fans of Marcia Willett will want to continue the story of the extended English family begun in FIRST FRIENDS. This fourth installment introduces a whole new cast of characters while bringing forth remembered characters from her previous novels. Three couples, each at a different point in their marriage, are the focus of this compelling story set on the moors of Dartmoor.

Phyllida and Alistair Makepeace are a naval couple dealing with the separation such a life includes as well as infidelity and a deep personal tragedy.

Claudia and Jeff Maynard seem like the perfect couple outwardly, but in their private lives there is misery and incompatibility. How little they know of each other reaches a shattering climax and the truth leads them to re-examine and re-direct their lives.

Clemmie and Quentin Halliwell are an elderly couple approaching end-of-life decisions and dealing with their own past which held its share of recriminations. Quentin happens to be godfather to Oliver Wivenhoe, a favorite of readers of Willett's past novels, and it is Oliver, now graduated from college, who enters the story and interacts with all three of these couples.

Also hovering over the story is the dipper, a small diving bird, the sight of which has almost magical powers over the characters. If you enjoy relationship dramas, the charm of English country life, and characters so fully developed you can take them to your heart, then you will truly enjoy this amazing tale.

An extremely contoversial book but certainly an eye opener. All those things one thought were true appear to be confirmed. Even things we hadn't heard of were written in such a way that they even changed our opinion of some of the royals. Now I understand why it was banned in the UK.

A must read - you won't be able to put it don't.

A REAL LOOK AT THE LIFE OF A DOCTOR'S FAMILY
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 1998-05-09
Not only was this book written in an entertaining fashion, it depicted the problems as well as the glamour of a doctor's family. That's why I liked the book so much - it didn't reveal only the glory of a doctor's family's world. Regardless of the fact that doctors earn in a month what most of us earn in a year, they are humans who have problems just like anyone else. This book gives an inside glimpse of a doctor's family. It was very enjoyable. I am a fan of Elizabeth Seifert, so I am grateful for all these wonderful and enjoyable books she left behind.

A long sought-after favorite of collectors is back in print!! Cecil Aldin is known for capturing the personality of dogs perfectly in his illustrations. If you're unfamiliar with his work this book is a charming introduction. A must-have if you love dogs, and especially if you collect dog books.

EVER!

This whodunit examines the death of a young artist, found suffocated in the kitchen of a barrister (the victim had been filling in for the nanny, who'd had an emergency appendectomy). Inspector Thanet has a wealth of suspects to choose from, and it's hard to winnow them down. Was it the extremely jealous soon-to-be ex-husband? Said husband's mother? The deceased's married lover? The married lover's wife? They all had a reason (or two or three)to dispatch her. The fun for the reader is following Thanet on his quest to unmask the guilty party(ies). Dorothy Simpson is simply amazing. She's not an author that you read and put away her latest. You usually reread her books every so often just to delight in her well-sketched characters, extraordinary and yet believable plots, sly wit, terrific dialogue, and her main character, Luke Thanet. She draws him as a fully developed person, with foibles and nobility. It's very hard to believe he's not real. Why they've never made a movie from her series is the real mystery. Are you reading this Spielberg? Get busy!

AN AMAZING WESTERN ADVENTURE!

I still can't believe how good this western is. Every word is perfect and the story is incredible. Marshal John Rye helps an ex-Texas Ranger rescue another ranger who is being held captive by Comancheros down in Mexico. The people are so well developed, you feel like you know them. There is a haunting quality to the story and some unexpected turns. Ray Hogan is a master of the western novel. Must read for western fans.

Double Trouble was the first book of Ms Toveys that I read, and it hooked me! She tells of the life, and death of one of their Siamese cats, and the new kitten arriving and fitting in. She can be poigniant(?) without being saccarine sweet, and extremely hilarious. Her tale off the trials and tribulatiions of Siamese cats, as well as the rewards of owning them (or should I better say, being owned BY them) was a treat the first time I read it, and the fourth time as well. If you enjoy reading, enjoy cats, and enjoy laughing, you will love this book. Guarenteed!!

Great look at mischief among the oil companies.

John Putnam Thatcher gets involved in a kidnapping. Not as a victim, and certainly not as the bad guy, but as the one delivering the million and a half dollars in ransom to the Swiss bank where the terrorist group known as Black Tuesday will pick it up.

Poor Thatcher. He likes a quiet life. But nothing goes his way. The ransom is picked up by a blond packbacker who immediately disappears. The terrorists remain quiet, but it takes weeks before the victim reappears. And when he does, the questions just become louder. Because the victim was the major figure in an important oil drilling contract for the North Sea in Scotland. His company wins the bid and are just beginning to get things ironed out when someone plants a bomb in his car. Then it turns out that he had never been kidnapped in the first place. So what happened to all that ransom money?

I always like Emma Lathen's books, but since they are out of print, they are hard to find. I just got a copy of this one yesterday at a thrift store and I couldn't wait to read it. I hadn't ever read this one before and it was a real treat. I love her stuff. If you're a fan, I really recommend this one.

"Down Daisy Street" is another great book by English author Katie Flynn. Starting out in 1935 Liverpool, the reader meet Kathy Kelling a young girl who life changes in one day. Meanwhile, in Norfork, Alec Hewitt is also facing many challanges. So war comes to Britian, and they will meet.
Katie Flynn is one of the few writers that are able to the reader into the action of her book, and this is one the reason that I try not to miss any of her books.

"Down Lambeth Way" by Mary Jane Staples is the first book in the "Adams" series. This book focus on Robert "Boots" Adams and his family before and during World War 1. The Adams family may be poor, but they always seems to get by even if they have to go the pawnman to though the hard times.
This was a great book and a great beginning to the "Adams series" these books may be hard to find but they are worth it.
