Excellent examples of resilience
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2004-04-12
People are committed to careers and children. They are not always committed to each other, alas. Sophy and the narrator Emma are excellent examples of resilience.

Emma is married to David, an actor. He wants to go to Hereford for seven months. She wants to remain where they are since she has a chance at a newsreader position. Emma's father was a theologian. Flora was born thirteen months after the meeting of Emma Lawrence and David Evans. Garrick had been born in Hereford. Emma had been brought up in Cambridge.

The couple met Sophy Brent in Hereford. Sophy was surprised that Emma and David had two children under the age of two. Emma thought the furniture in their house was frightfully ugly. When the couple attended a reception, David was aggressive and Emma was formal. Emma saw David give his tie away with a broad theatrical gensture to a girl while attending a social gathering. She encountered the parents of an old school friend, Mary.

Later people returned with Emma and David for drinks. Emma felt that actors talked in generalities, robbing their conversation of interest. Emma, not an actress, finds herself confronted with issues of a performance and audience. Emma had become so accustomed to a bright and superficial flow of information being exchanged at cocktail parties that she was no longer the serious person her friend Mary knew.

Emma commenced to have a liason with a director, Wyndham Farrar. Since her marriage to David Evans she had not been involved with anyone else. Wyndham would not be staying at the place much longer as his theatrical duties ceased. Emma realized that David and Sophy, his leading lady, were having an affair. David faulted her for picking Wyndham and having a relationship right under everyone's nose. An automobile mishap brings everyone to his or her senses.

An inspiring story

I have to admit that I wasn't expecting much from the book, because all I had heard was "it is very nice"; but I loved it! It is very well- written, and I couldn't let go! The story begins when Gemma, a gorgeous, young aspiring actress loses one of her legs in a train crash...and with her legs, she loses her dreams and her independence. However, she is determined to overcome all the difficulties that are put in her way, and manages to keep her head high no matter what. At the same time, she meets a young doctor, and their love-hate relationship is at times sweet, at others really unbelievable!! She also has to deal with her overprotective mother, her father who appears after leaving them when she was born, and all the legal matters of the accident. Overall, I think it is a great story which describes what someone in her position would go through in a very realistic way. I very highly recommend it, and I am certain that when you close the book, you will have a wide smile on your face and an inspiring story to remember forever.

This book combines the witty detecting of Alex Tanner and her Notting Hill pals with a brief history of British feminism. Amazing Grace, the Germaine Greer clone, is ab fab. Donald gives readers a wicked look at Oxford dons, the class system as authorized by Oxbridge, and the Fermat's Theorem crowd. The settings are tied to the plot and the theme in spectacular fashion.

It's worth the trouble to find a copy.

Reading this book gave me firm ground to walk the path, not letting go of walking it, wich would be all too easy. In a very down to earth way it explanes the Golden Rule and the way in living Unselfish Love. Having read it and started to experience Unselfish Love made my life glow as it did never before. The Golden Rule Workbook took my by the hands to be able to keep following this beautiful path. I treuly would recomend this book to everybody seeking the most beautiful path in life.

What a marvellous story. From the cradle to the grave, we follow a woman who has the (mis)fortune to win the heart of the King. And Plaidy, true to form, plops the story right into the middle of history-in-the-making, where Jane Shore is driven by her passion to love first Edward IV and then finds herself in quite a bind, again and again. Jane could choose a simple, easy life with her betrothed - or she can risk everything for the love and heart of a King. I really enjoy how Plaidy doesn't gloss over anything in her novels about the lives her characters live. From the simplest acts such as cooking and riding and everyday life, to the massive banquets and the punishments for criminals of the day, Plaidy gives her readers an "inside view" into what life was really like in Medeival times -- and you don't realize that you are learning until you've finished the book!

This is a wonderful story in the George Felse series, although we see very little of George this go round and a great deal of his marvelous wife, Bunty. In this one Bunty is on her own while George is in London following a lead. While she is being maudlin about her forty-first birthday, she gets thrown into the adventure of her life. She meets a distraught stranger in a pub on Saturday night, and she finds herself caught up in a truly terrifying situation. The action of the book only takes place over 24 hours, but there is enough action jam-packed in that 24 hours to keep the reader turning pages. We're talking about murder, kidnapping, organized crime and a whole slew of lesser things. And Bunty slides through it all in her usual inimitable fashion. Of course the writing is pure Ellis Peters, and the book is a delight!

This book will truly make you think about what you eat! John Humphries (a well known broadcaster in the UK) takes a long hard look at the agro-industry and he doesnt like what he sees. Chapter by chapter each area is examined (abuse of soil so yields are falling, pesticide residues on food, overuse of antibiotics causing stronger viruses etc) and little of the news is good - in fact some of it is so intriguing that its almost as hard to put down as a thriller. True, the key points are repeated one too many times but I can put up with that for this level of education. Its hard not to agree with his argument that for the sake of cheap food we are now putting up with dangerous food.

This is an utterly charming book on tape. It consists of a compilation of memories of Dirk Bogarde's childhood, which was spent with his younger sister and nanny in a lovely English village. The worries and concerns as well as the joys of this small boy are captured in this delightful memoir. Alas, I finished listening to the last tape on the day Dirk Bogarde died. What a lovely gift he has given us; his memories and his reading of this tape.

A Great Way to experience a Great City

Few people know the history of Greensboro as well as Mrs. Fripp. Having taken one of her personally-guided tours of the city, I was quite impressed with Mrs. Fripp's genuine loved and regard for Greensboro's historic offerings. That fact becomes even more evident in this book.

There seems to be no corner or alley that she isn't able to place within its historical context. Her intense devotion to history, accompanied by her first-hand involvement in the world of antiquities, has resulted in a depth of knowledge that is unparalleled. In 'Greensboro: The Chosen Center', Mrs. Fripp skillfully combines the fruits of her research with carefully chosen illustrations that are marvelous, even by themselves. The marriage between the two make this book enjoyable for just about anyone who picks it up. What a great way to learn about one of the South's greatest cities.
