I loved this book and could not put it down. The Duchess wrote her story with an honest heart. She is humble and gracious despite the outstanding fact that the King of England gave up his throne in order to marry her. She comes across as a woman who was fun to be around, the life of every party, but much more importantly as someone who overcame great obstacles in her life without ever losing her spirit. Her story is one of survival, lots of heartache, but lots of joy too. A pleasure to read. She is someone who should not be forgotten.

I'm not an expert on the Windsors, in fact this is the first book I've read on the subject so I don't know if she completely skews the facts but then most memoirs are biased towards the writer anyway, I guess that's the privilege of telling one's story oneself.

First this is well written so it's enjoyable and quick to read it. And second, it is a very compelling story.

I'd really recommend this book for anyone interested in the Windsors, or for anyone like me who just loves well written memoirs.

I liked this story because it took place in New Hampshire and I live in NH. I've never read a book that takes place in NH so i was curious to see how it was going to be. It was a tender love story that i thoroughly enjoyed and would read the book again.

Henrietta's war is one of the most charming, witty, books I have read. The gentle humour with which it recounts the first few years of the second world war from the perspective of an intelligent, educated, housewife living in a village in Devon, (England), is quite delightful. I recommend it to anyone who enjoys subtlety in their humour. A winner

Follow the adventures of Henrietta Brown as she and her neighbors keep the home fires burning in WWII Devon. This semi-autobiographical account gives one an idea of what day to day life must have been yet instills a subtle dry humor that keeps the reader coming back for more. Henrietta battles weeds and lumbago while digging for victory (complete with a hot water bottle tied to her back!)Husband Charles and demanding Perry the dog learn to live with rationing and Faith the divorcee shocks the ladies by learning to cook, but her secret recipe for marmalade isn't quite the success she had hoped! And will Henrietta go to prison when she shows a light during the blackout? You'll have to read it to see! My own copy of this book is falling apart and I've glued the pages back in many times. It definitely gets my 'book to take to a desert island' award.

Enjoyed this immensely. The characters are well developed and each book has you waiting for the next installment. The period is detailed and like "Poirot" you feel as if you're there. Well developed plot and for a mystery afficionado, twists that make the ending worth the read.

Satisfying and very British

In 1936, Hitler is marching the Germans toward war, Franco is beating back the Republicans in Spain, and the English upper class is trying to hold onto a terrible secret--the new King, Edward, has fallen in love with a divorced woman, Wallis Simpson and is talking about marrying her. Lord Edward Corinth is called in to help with a vital task. The King's former mistress has stolen letters the King wrote to Wallis--letters that go beyond matters of the heart to discuss his sympathies toward the Nazi cause. If they fall into the wrong hands, not only the King, but the entire English monarchy may fall.

Edward agrees to help, but before he can persuade his friend to return the letters, she is killed and the letters vanish. Edward is the leadins suspect. Together with his friend, communist and newspaper reporter Verity Browne, Edward tries to get to the bottom of the mystery. But, can he trust even his friend Verity or will she, when she learns the truth, tell the Communist Party the truth about the letters and lead to the very overthrow that Edward has tried to prevent?

Author David Roberts writes convincingly about the fascinating period between the first and second world wars. The depression has radicalized all of Europe and both fascists and communists march and clash in the streets. With its message of power and elitism, fascism is popular with the upper class, even the King. Verity's struggles with her loyalties to country and party ring true. Edward is charmingly elite, yet cannot avoid the attraction toward the energetic Verity.

HOLLOW CROWN combines a critical period of history with convincing and detailed characters and a solid mystery to deliver a satisfying and compelling read.

A very convincing account of the Gallipoli campaign, and trench warfare in France. This should be read by every schoolchild, to fix in their minds the horrors of military combat.

Excellent treatment of little known aspect of World War One

The Horizon is the third volume of the Blackwood series. In this book we meet Jonathan Blackwood as he and the Royal Marines learn to adapt themselves to the new ways of war in World War I. Jonathan is a Royal Marine from a long line of Royal Marines - two of whom have won the Victoria Cross, the highest decoration for valor in combat in the British awards scheme. His family is known throughout the Royal Marines it is sometimes something of a disadvantage.

Jonathan has been an observor on the Western Front but his experiences are not always appreciated by Royal Marines senior to him and without his experience. 1915 finds Jonathan and his men are on the beach at Gallipoli fighting the Turks in a no quarter given or asked for war. The Royal Marines are clinging to scraps of ground, loosing men constantly to snipers, booby traps and fruitless battles. Jonathan is wounded as he tries to prevent his own ships from shelling is men and is returned to Great Britain.

He recuperates and meets a young woman as he does so. The wrinkle is that this woman loved his older brother who died early in World War I. Yet they both learn to love one another in a world that is turned upside down.

After he is recovered from his wounds, Jonathan is sent to a newly activated battalion of Royal Marines bound for the Western Front. Now it is 1917 and the vast majority of the British Army is located in France and Flanders. Here is the real war now that the running sore of Gallipoli has been ended. The Royal Marines are mixed in with the British Army and both need to adjust to the forced marriage. Here on the Western Front the same problems face Jonathan as at Gallipoli - the losses of men due to enemy snipers, raids and assaults that are expected to gain miles of ground and end up gaining only yards, if that. It is as if the generals have gotten to the point where all they can do is throw more men into battle - that is all they seem to know.

Reeman has captured the grinding despair of Gallipoli and France. You can almost feel the heat of Gallipoli and the smell of rotting corpses (British, ANZAC and Turk). You can hear the sound of sniper shot and flies. You can almost feel the penetrating cold of the mud of France as the men stand in it day after day. As they assault prepared positions with little hope of success.

Few probably know of the exploits of the Royal Marines in World War I - they have been overshadowed by the sheer weight of numbers of the British and Commonwealth Armies. Yet serve they did with great distinction.

I recommend this book as a must read for those involved in the story of the Blackwood family. It is also an excellent book on it's own as a book about World War I by a very special segment of the British forces. It is an excellent work giving great detail about the campaings in Gallipoli and France. It is well written with exceptional charecters - from generals down to newly recruited Royal Marines who have barely learned how to shave. It is a powerful book.

Love on the rural Scottish coast
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2007-07-27
A passionate, well-written story of love on the 1878 Scottish coast, Stirling's novel centers the small cattle farm owned by Vassie Campbell and worked by her and her daughters while her drunken, feckless husband runs a fishing boat with their two sons.

Their marginal, labor-intensive life is disrupted by the coming of new owners to the larger, adjacent farm, Fetternish. First is the invasion of sheep, led by the shepherd Michael Tarrant, handsome and enigmatic, who immediately captures the passions of sensual Biddy and intellectual Innis Campbell. Then come the lairds themselves, the Baverstock brothers, one of whom is soon captivated by beautiful Biddy and the land itself, so removed from squalid, civilized Edinborough.

And there's the youngest sister, Aileen, not right in the head, who communes with fairies and hides a secret with the power to destroy the family.

While it all sounds formulaic, in Stirling's capable hands the story develops a rare complexity and atmosphere. She permits no certainty of love triumphant; events are more likely to be ruled by other vagaries of fate, like cattle illness or headstrong stupidity.

Her characters are complex people with strains of stubborn foolishness, appetite or shortsightedness to balance their more reasonable qualities. The exceptions to this are both men; the silent, long-suffering minister and the girls' father, Ronan Campbell, whose lazy selfishness hides only a deeper, brutish nature.

The Scottish coast is a character in itself and the book is richly fleshed out with details of the daily work, complex motivations and differing social perspectives of the characters. Thoroughly enjoyable.

A sterling nineteenth century Scottish romance

Their father seems to be in a constant drunken state. Their younger sister Aileen seems to have physically and mentally stopped maturing five years ago when she turned ten. Their two brothers are always looking for a quick rich scam. Only their mother serves as a positive role model. Yet life on the island of Mull off the coast of Scotland in 1878 was pleasant enough for sisters, Biddy and Innis.

However, everything abruptly changes when a newcomer, shepherd Michael Tarrant, arrives. Both sisters want him for themselves and a sibling rivalry breaks out between them. However, Biddy, being prettier than Innis, catches Michael's immediate attention, but its is Innis, the deeper of the duo, who falls in love with the Incomer. With the rivalry turning acrimonious, it would seem that none of the participants in this skewed triangle will find lasting happiness.

THE ISLAND WIFE is a well-written historical romance by one of the sub-genre's top writers, Jessica Sterling. The novel is charming due to several intriguing sub-plots that add depth while neatly tying into the main story line. The three prime characters and the support cast add much local flavor to an already superb tale. The esteemed Ms. Sterling has created a pure gold experience for the historical romance audience.

Powerful summary of Livermore's methods

When I first opened the package that contained this "book" (It more resembles a pamphlet)I was disappointed by its paper cover and brief 32 pages. However I was not disappointed by its content. This book contains articles written by the legendary trader Richard Wyckoff for his Magazine of Wall Street from interviews with Jesse Livermore. Written around 1921 it a treasure because of the knowledge presented by these two legends. This book covers all the most important principles of successful stock trading quickly and clearly:
1. Only trade the strongest stocks in the strongest industries.
2. Stocks have seasons and know which ones are currently in fashion.
3. Anticipate future trends.
4. Get plenty of sleep.
5. Have a full understanding of the current economic situation.
6. Stay away from other people and influences to keep your mind clear.
7. The big money is in the long swings.
8. He let the ticker tape tell him what was really going on accumulation or distribution.
9. Only trade a stock with a potential 10 point swing coming with a reasonable time.
10. Get out of a stock if it moves against you 3 or 4 points.
11. Pyramid buy your wins not your losses. Adding to winning positions for the first few points,
12.Sell stocks that are not moving up and buy the current best prospect, keep your capital liquid and working.

You will also get details on Livermore's office set up and personal tendencies. Who better to learn from than a man you made millions several times from nothing?

My first Livermore related book,,,like the Tardis this little book is packed with good info on Jesse Livermore and his methods,

i was under the impression he was a "range breakout" only Darvas style man but not so,he also hints at price and time and swing mechanics too,,(not all black n white).

this interested me enough to order some other books Livermore related, imho i enjoyed this book and enjoyed highlighting key areas with my pen.

Unless you marry into the British Royal family, it is virtually impossible to ever personally view all the paintings featured in this book (I believe Windsor Castle displays only one painting per year). This book is the next best thing. How else can one marvel at the equisite design, detail and color presented in these Mughal paintings? While the text is written in the usual art history academia mumbo jumbo (meaning dry dry dry), the pictures speak for themselves. One can easily find a sentence here or a paragraph there that will give added insight to the paintings. But the text isn't required to appreciate the magnificance of these art pieces from Shah Jahan's era.

Although this isn't Dickens' Tale of Two Cities or Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice, it is a funny and heart-warming book. I loved it! This is the first book in Chesney's Poor Relations series and introduces Lady Fortescue, as well as Colonel Sandhurst and the other poor relations who start up their aptly-named Poor Relation hotel.

I loved this book and will probably read all of Marion Chesney's other works! I'm such a romantic history buff! I thought it was funny and entertaining and a delightful change from what some people think great readers should read - like books on the mating rituals of pigeons or something! If you love romance and like history, then I am sure you'll love this!

This is Arabella's story, and I think I enjoyed it only a little less than that of Bersaba and Angelet. (I like to hear two sides of a story.) I found Arabella a little dull, but I liked Harriet. :) Arabella seemed to lack the fire of her mother, Bersaba. All in all, this was a good book, but I figured out the ending wayy before I was finished.

An exciting look at England during Cromwell's reign and after the triumphant return of Charles II. We are introduced to the adult Arabella, to Carlton, and to the irrepressible Harriet whose lives all continue in "The Love Child," "Song of the Siren," and "Will You Love Me In September." There is a little bit of everything in "Lament for A Lost Lover" - history, romance, and mystery. The reader can connect with the characters, share in the intrigue, feel their pain and rejoice at their happiness. The characters become friends who you will want to visit again and again. It is a book that can be enjoyed by itself or as part of the series that began with "Miracle at St. Bruno's."
