A Sequel to Jane Austen's "EMMA"
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2007-07-26
Ever wonder what became of Mr. Weston, yes he married poor Miss Taylor. But did they have any children? Yes! and her name is Celia.

This is a sequel to Jane Austen's book "Emma," and takes place about 18 years later. This book does not mention all the characters from Emma, including Emma herself. This book is about the Westons and Churchills.

Celia is 18 and now motherless, during summer she comes across new acquaitences and is reintroduced to her half brothers family (Frank Churchill). In this books some characters are spiteful, some deceitful, and others just secretive. It was not an uneventful summer! I recommend this book for people who adored the characters from Emma and want to take a trip back into Highbury.

The only thing I found displeasing in this book is that sometimes the writing was not making sense. I feel that a better editing job was needed. But it did not take away from the pleasure of reading this book.

Terrific history with excellent photos and drawings

If you want to see and read about Austin's history, this is the book for you. The book covers Austin's story from its inception in the late 1830s to the mid-1980s. Overall, I learned how Austin evolved into the city it now is.

Having just read Steven Saylor's "A Twist at the End" and visited the O. Henry Museum, I was most interested in Austin's history during the last two decades of the 19th century. Readers wanting to know more about other parts of the city's history will find that the text and graphical content puts each stage of Austin's development into a useful perspective.

I learned...and thoroughly enjoyed the process.

The aye-aye and I is a quick and easy read and the relatively famous author has one of the best writing styles I've ever seen. It tells of the trials and tribulations of the late Gerald Durrell through his trip through Madagascar , though it is humorous it also has many insights to the people and wildlife of this interesting island.

When British sleuth Anna Lee tries to help a kidnap victim she is herself abducted and must rely on her wits and inner strength to survive. I loved the narration of Jill Tanner(as opposed to Juliet Prague).

My buddy Fred Stetson gave this to me for Christmas/2005. We both were helicopter pilots in the same unit at Vinh Long in the Mekong Delta, 1966-67. Fred knows how much I understand and cherish great military aviation books. This is one! Matthew Parker interviewed many Brits who were there at the moment when England could have perished under Nazi attack. Personal lives are revealed, as women and men begin to understand the dimensisons of their peril. This is not some glory boy tale of Spitfire pilots, but a day by day account of the terror all crews experienced during the days preceding the Blitz and during it. The Luftwaffe's mistakes are ruthlessly brought to light, and the endurance of the home forces detailed. The RAF has always been an awesome example for me of how to conduct your military affairs, and I still salute them as a former US Army aviator!

A fascinating, tightly-written study
Helpful Votes: 18 out of 18 total.

For some American readers like me, the tragedy of Princess Diana's death may have pointed up how little we know about the British royal family and sent us looking for sources. After starting and discarding several tendentious "histories" of the House of Windsor, I found this one to be a breath of fresh air. Peter Fearon has written an objective, concisely-written, exhaustive account of the royal family (beginning with the death of Queen Victoria), and yet has done so in a highly readable way. Unlike every other author I've seen so far, Fearon doesn't seem to have an axe to grind about the Windsors. I'm in my 40s and hadn't been exposed to much of the history here and found it fascinating. I was sorry to finish the book.

I read this book many years ago when I was 18. As a teen much like Toby, it spoke straight to my heart and touched me for a long time. The book description above does not do justice to this lyrical, sweet story.

Lucie's story in Philippa Carr's brilliant series
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2004-06-02
Lucie has lived a very unusual life. Through a strange turn of events, she was raised in an "adopted" household with her "adopted" sister, Belinda. She grew up knowing she was not of the same class, and therefore not of the same treatment. Then, unexpectedly, the truth comes out. She is actually the real daughter, and Belinda is the adopted one! All of this was revealed in the previous book in the series "The Changeling". When "The Black Swan" opens, Lucie is the beloved daughter of Benedict Landson, a distinguished politician. Her life is shattered when he is assassinated right in front of her. To make matters worse, her fiancé, Joel, is murdered while on a mission to Africa. She gradually grows away from her tragedy, and becomes more resigned to life. However, she is haunted by the apparition of her father's murderer, whom she helped convict and thus had an indirect hand in his execution. She meets a brother and sister, of whom she grows fond. Eventually, they all live in the same household and strange things begin to happen. Lucie soon realizes that someone is trying to kill her, and will do so soon, unless Lucie can do something to stop it.

I enjoyed this book very much, as I seem to do with all of Philippa Carr's. I did figure out some of the mystery, but I was very shocked with the actual ending. I would recommend reading this after you have read "The Changeling" so that the big surprises from the previous book are not lost.
