Appalachia Inside Out is a collection of some of the finest writing produced by Appalachian writers about Appalachia. The volume is divided into thematic units such as Roots, Exploration, and Settlement, Heroes and Demigods, and Nature and Progress. The reader will find a find collection of essays, short stories, and poems carefully chosen to present the region accurately and honestly. Together volumes 1 and 2 of this work give scholars and general readers alike a full range of readings about Appalachia. As a graduate student, I found this book a fascinating introduction to the study of Appalachian writers and writing, and as a teacher of Southern Appalachian Literature, I consider this book invaluable. I highly recommend Appalachia Inside Out to anyone wishing to read and learn more about Appalachia.

The 1888 edition has six volumes, with about 400 pages in each volume. It contains thousands of biographies of then-famous Americans, along with dozens of steel engravings with facsimile autographs. I've read elsewhere that the biographies in the 1888 edition contain some factual errors, and need to be reviewed against more current sources.

This is a terrific record of the 28,000+ men who received their paroles from Grant at Lee's surrender. Soldiers are isted alphabetically with the each unit name listed after the soldier's name.

Long awaited by both archaeologists and ethnohistorians, locals as well as non locals. The work does justice to many interpretations long held back in the dark by traditionalists and conservatives. The region has always managed to resist single minded interpretations of its human experience and Wilson's updates and insights will be well received.

Joseph Urban was primarily responsible for bringing the influence of the Vienese Secessionist Movement and Modernism to the theatre of America near the turn of the 20th century. Sure, he wasn't the only one and this book doesn't try to over-state Urban's influence. The text lets the designs do the work.
The book is nothing more than a catalogue but what an extraordinary catalogue it is! The photos of the renderings and models are top quality and really good choices by the author and editors. One can really see the watercolor techniques in the renderings along with the development of the design ideas Uban went through in his varied and prolific life as a designer. I really enjoyed the ddesigns and written text associated with the New School of Social Research. His work seems to be a precurser to Mondrian without the sterility of some of the Bauhaus concepts. His theatrical work really enlivened his architectural work.
His designs for the theatre were outrageous and vital.
I rate this book so very high because Urban's work is so important to stage design in America. As I said earlier, this book is a catalogue - but what a body of inspired and fantastical work to catalogue!

This is a great book. Covers argillite carving from a number of perspectives. Has interviews with some well known carvers and presents their point of view. Gives soome of the cultural perspective though it does not particularly present the Haida view. Some beautiful examples.
