An action thriller to make you want to grow a beard!

Review Date: 1999-10-16
I first stumbled across this novel in my village library when in my late teens. Now ten years later the story's still haunting me and it can still reinvoke the feelings that were so much a part of me when I was young; rebellion, longing, hope, pride.

I managed to get hold of a copy through Amazon and now it takes pride of place on my bookshelf. If you like to lose yourself in a tale of adventure that'll take you back to your youth then you can't go far wrong by grabbing hold of a copy of this novel (though you'll be lucky if it's still available!).

A legenday motorcycle gang lived life to the full in the sixties, but now years later they must reach out for one another and band together to solve a mystery that darkened their past and forced their separation. It's a corny enough story, but it's told with enough gusto and feeling it'll have you on the edge of your seat longing to be riding alongside such heroes.

If you're lucky enough to still be a teen grab this novel and devour it as I once did. You'll not regret it! My other recommendations are any of the early novels by Marc Olden (Gai Jin, Oni etc - again hard if not impossible to get hold of), those of William Diehl (Sharkey's Machine, Chamelion etc ) or those of Travanian (Shibumi, Eiger Sanction etc). Happy Reading!!!

This book is a regional history of the discovery and development of an area encompassing the swamp lands of eastern Arkansas and, more specifically, the Spice Swamps, where the little town of Hickory Ridge eventually grew out of the mud. The period covered stretches from when the first white man stumbled across the area until about the year 2000. It is a 'must read' for anyone even remotely interested in the history of this section of America.

Informative and uplifting

Review Date: 2006-05-11
In 1903, then president of Princeton University, Woodrow Wilson (1856-1924) returned to Wesleyan University, and gave a speech on the occasion of the bicentennial of the birth of John Wesley. Wilson's speech was a wonderful look into the life and work of John Wesley, first providing a historical context, and then explain what he did and why. In 1915, not long after he had ascended to the Presidency of the United States, his speech was published as this short book.

Overall, I must say that this book surprised me. It shows off President Wilson's genius as a speaker, and as an educator. He does an excellent job of informing the reader about John Wesley and his times, and does it in a short and easy-to-understand manner. I must say that the more I read of Woodrow Wilson's works, the more impressed I become. This is a great little book, informative and uplifting. I highly recommend it!
